Arab journalists, lawmakers call for media reform at Dubai summit
DUBAI: Speaking at the Arab Media Summit on Tuesday, prominent Arab journalists and lawmakers — including Emad El-Din Hussein, Paula Yacoubian, and Mohammed Al-Rumaihi — called for urgent media reform to confront growing political fragmentation and foster greater unity across the Arab world.
'Whether we like it or not, the world changed after Oct. 7, 2023,' said Hussein, editor-in-chief of the Egyptian daily Al-Shorouk. 'I am proud to stand with the Arab League, but we are deeply divided.'
Hussein spoke during a panel alongside Yacoubian, Lebanese journalist and member of parliament, and Al-Rumaihi, Kuwaiti author and sociology professor.
'For the first time in the Arab world, we're witnessing significant transformation,' said Yacoubian. 'We are beginning to build our own foundation.'
While acknowledging developments such as the Syrian Arab Republic's tentative steps toward stabilization, and the formation of a new Lebanese government, the panelists underscored persistent structural challenges across the region.
'The Israeli dream is to divide Syria — so what are Arabs doing in response?' Yacoubian asked, pointing to regional inaction and disunity.
Each panelist offered a distinct perspective on the root causes of the Arab world's instability.
'Political Islam and the manipulation of religion remain among the most serious internal conflicts we face,' said Al-Rumaihi.
Hussein echoed this sentiment: 'Political Islam is the biggest threat we face today. While many talk about solutions, few are willing to diagnose the real disease.'
Despite differing viewpoints, the panelists agreed on one point: media and education must be at the heart of efforts to heal political rifts.
'Arab education is classical,' Al-Rumaihi noted. 'We need to provide an education to give people immunity against anything the media says.'
Hussein added: 'Many can't comprehend the evolving language of today's youth. The Arab world remains in the dark, and our leaders are enabling this. Without free media, we cannot survive.'

Pakistan's Air Sial launches inaugural flight to UAE
ISLAMABAD: Air Sial, a Pakistani private airline, has launched its first flight to the United Arab Emirates, it said on Monday, in a significant development for the Pakistani aviation industry. Inaugurated in 2020 by the Sialkot Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the airline initially aimed to improve air travel to and from Pakistan's Sialkot city, a major industrial hub in the eastern Punjab province. Over the years, Air Sial has expanded its operations not just countrywide, but to countries in the Gulf region and uses a fleet of modern Airbus A320 aircraft. 'Pakistan Airports Authority successfully facilitated and supervised the launch of Air Sial's inaugural international flight (PF784) from Islamabad International Airport to Dubai,' Air Sial said on Monday, adding the flight departed around 11:34am with 137 passengers aboard. Air Sial's domestic network includes major cities like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Sialkot, Quetta and Multan. The airline entered the international market in March 2023 with the launch of its inaugural flight to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It also flies to Riyadh, Madinah and Dammam. Air Sial extended its international reach the same year in June by launching direct flights from Pakistan to Oman. Late last month, the state-run Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) also resumed direct flights between Dubai and Pakistan's mountainous Skardu district in a bid to boost tourism.

Sudan's Prime Minister Vows to ‘Eliminate Rebellion'
Sudan's newly appointed Prime Minister, Kamel Idris, pledged to 'completely eliminate the rebellion and all forms of rebel militias, and safeguard Sudan's national security,' while announcing the dissolution of the current government. On Sunday, Idris informed ministers in a meeting of the government's dissolution and assigned the secretaries-general and deputy ministers to manage affairs until a new government is formed. He urged countries supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to stop, calling for what he termed a 'comprehensive national healing campaign.' He said he would adopt an inclusive intra-Sudanese dialogue that excludes no one and rejects regionalism and racism 'after eliminating the rebellion.' In his first address to the Sudanese people following his swearing-in on Saturday, Idris said his priorities begin with national security, restoring the state's prestige, completely ending the ongoing rebellion, and dismantling the phenomenon of rebel militias. He promised to establish a rule of law that includes the prosecution, judiciary, constitutional court, maintaining security, and managing the transitional period and the executive apparatus efficiently and successfully to achieve security and stability in the country. Idris added that he would work on rebuilding Sudan's foreign relations, especially with neighboring countries and the wider Arab and African regions, as well as with all countries globally. The Sovereignty Council chairman and army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, issued a decree on May 19 appointing Idris as prime minister, filling a position left vacant since the resignation of former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. Hamdok resigned following the October 25, 2021 coup led by Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as 'Hemedti,' against the civilian government that was formed after the popular uprising which overthrew former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. This government was often referred to as the 'revolution government.' Idris, who took his oath on Saturday, previously served as Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Secretary-General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. He also ran against former President Omar al-Bashir in the 2010 presidential elections, receiving around 77,000 votes out of over 10 million voters. Meanwhile, on Sunday, three drones struck locations affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces in western Sudan, according to eyewitnesses. Residents reported that the airstrikes hit the center of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, targeting a hotel, an RSF medical unit, and RSF positions on the city's eastern outskirts.

MENA clubs back Ben Sulayem for second term as FIA president
DUBAI: National motor sport and mobility authorities from across the Middle East and North Africa region have delivered another major vote of confidence in Mohammed Ben Sulayem's leadership of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile and urged him to seek re-election as president. The 29 FIA member clubs have written to Ben Sulayem saying that his tenure 'has brought vital reforms across mobility and motorsport, marked by enhanced transparency, governance, sustainability, and inclusivity.' Backing him for a second term in office, they expressed confidence that this will 'further strengthen and modernize the organization for the benefit of all its members and stakeholders.' In a letter of support to Ben Sulayem, the clubs said: 'Your vision has helped bridge gaps, inspire unity, and empower regions like ours to contribute more meaningfully to the global FIA mission. 'We now feel equal as members of the FIA regardless of our size or location. We are proud to stand behind a leader from our region who has shown integrity, innovation, and courage in driving positive change on the world stage.' Among the senior regional officials to sign the letter were MENA FIA Vice President for Mobility Essa Hamza Al-Failakawi from Kuwait, MENA FIA Vice President for Sport Abdulla bin Issa Al-Khalifa from Bahrain, and President of the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdulla Al-Faisal. The clubs told Ben Sulayem: 'The modernization of our institution and the strong emphasis you have placed on member engagement and regional development have greatly benefited our clubs and the communities we serve.'
