Social media reacts to Alabama's second round SEC Tournament loss vs. Tennessee
After a 4-1 victory over Missouri on Tuesday morning, the Alabama Crimson Tide advanced to the second round of the 2025 SEC Tournament in Hoover on Wednesday afternoon where they collided with the defending champions, the Tennessee Volunteers.
A back-and-forth contest between the SEC's No. 8 and No. 9 seeds, both of Alabama and Tennessee were playing to improve their chances at potentially hosting a regional in the NCAA Tournament, along with deciding who will be advancing to the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday against regular season champion Texas.
To get things started Wednesday afternoon, Tennessee struck for a run in the first, as well as another in the second, to take an early 2-0 on Alabama starter Aedan Finateri. The Crimson Tide would get on the board in the top of the fourth via a Richie Bonomolo Jr. RBI double as well, but Tennessee immediately struck for three runs in the bottom of that inning, building a commanding 5-1 lead.
However, Alabama came roaring back with a five-run top of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead in the game, capped by a two-RBI double from Bonomolo. Alabama also scored two runs during the inning via a Tennessee throwing error, and this seemed to be a potential turning point in the matchup.
That thought quickly changed however, as Tennessee tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, and went on to build a commanding 11-6 lead via a five-run sixth inning. The Volunteers also added four more runs in the eighth inning, followed by four from Alabama in the ninth, with Tennessee going on to win by a final score of 15-10.

Obermueller's third-team All-American honors add to his growing list of accomplishments from the past season, which now includes a 2025 All-Big Ten Tournament team and an ABCA/Rawlings NCAA All-Midwest Region first-team selection. While Obermueller could be in line for more honors following the conclusion of the 2025 College World Series later this month, a potential return for his senior season with the Hawkeyes could be vital to the program's success as they hope to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2023.
