
A biblical hatred is engulfing both sides in the Gaza conflict – and blinding them to reason
What he had in mind was the fury that drove Hamas to slaughter around 1,200 Israelis on a sleepy Saturday morning nearly 20 months ago and the fury that has driven the government of Benjamin Netanyahu to bombard Gaza ever since, killing more than 50,000, according to the Hamas-controlled health ministry, and, over the last 80 days, denying food to those who remain. He fears that the hatreds that fuelled these events, and that are fuelled by them, will grow larger and more venomous until nothing and no one is left. The whole land shall be laid waste and made desolate.
A biblical rage is one that devours all reason. It is blinding. It prevents those who are gripped by it from seeing anything other than their own side. It prevents them holding two apparently opposed thoughts in their minds, even when both are true. Take, as an example, two statements we can make about the events of this week.
Israel's use of hunger as a weapon of war, keeping humanitarian aid out of Gaza for some 11 weeks, is a morally indefensible act that has, rightly, outraged the world. The partial lifting of the blockade supplies the tiniest fraction of what is needed and represents, by Netanyahu's own admission, the 'minimal' amount he can get away with to keep US political support. That is a fact.
The deadly assault on the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington DC on Wednesday night was a morally indefensible act that left two young people dead. The pair were staffers at the Israeli embassy, but all the evidence suggests they were struck at random. Even if he was heard chanting 'Free Palestine' or 'I did it for Gaza', the gunman's target was a Jewish institution filled with Jews. That makes it an antisemitic act. That too is a fact.
And yet, people struggle to hold both facts at once. They fear that by acknowledging one, they will somehow weaken the force of the other. Some seized on the killings in Washington to downplay the killings in Gaza; others did the reverse.
In the first category were those who used the deaths of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim to argue that even to speak about the agony currently inflicted on Gaza by Israel is to incite terrorism. That was the move made by Netanyahu himself, a man never slow to exploit Jewish suffering for his own narrow political purposes. Earlier in the week, France, Canada and the UK had joined together to denounce Israel's escalating offensive in Gaza and especially its policy of hunger, described in March by Israel's defence minister as one of the country's 'main pressure levers' against Hamas. The shootings in DC gave Netanyahu an opening to hit back.
'I say to President Macron, Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Starmer, when mass murderers, rapists, baby killers and kidnappers thank you, you're on the wrong side of justice,' the Israeli PM said, before deploying a phrase once favoured by the left: 'You're on the wrong side of history.'
His argument amounts to the claim, often made, that those who draw attention to the consequences of Israeli policy are guilty of 'delegitimising' Israel. It does not occur to Netanyahu or his allies that what might undermine Israeli legitimacy in the eyes of a watching world is not the condemnation of Israel's actions, or the reporting of them, but the actions themselves.
Again, two statements, apparently in tension, can be true at the same time. Journalists who this week demanded that Israel and Egypt make Gaza accessible to international news organisations were right to do so: the facts need to be known. Those facts, once known, may well drive people into a state of rage – even murderous rage – which is why they have to be handled with scrupulous care.
And so, the UN humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, has been right to be clear and full-throated in his demands for Israel to let food and medicine into Gaza, but was wrong to suggest that 14,000 babies in Gaza would die within 48 hours – a statement that later had to be corrected, because that warning applied to what would happen if the state of siege was maintained not for another 48 hours, but for a full year. Grave enough, but not the same. Deep and lethal hatreds are at work here; people can be stirred to violence very easily. There is little room to be casual.
I would say the same of Yair Golan, a former general and now leader of Israel's opposition Democrats party. He deserves credit for demanding Israelis face up to and look hard at what so many prefer not to see. This week he warned, 'Israel is on the way to becoming a pariah state, like South Africa was, if we don't return to acting like a sane country,' adding that 'a sane country does not fight against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not give itself the aim of expelling populations.' That reference to baby-killing, the use of the word 'hobby', immediately allowed his critics to say he was reviving the antisemitic blood libel that cast Jews as the ritual slayers of Christian children.
This whole terrain is perilous and has to be navigated with great care, whether from within the conflict or without – and, again, that means realising that two things can be true at once. Yes, it's true that anti-Zionism is not always antisemitic. But that doesn't mean it's never antisemitic. Gary Lineker thought he was posting an anti-Zionist video. He failed to see it came attached to antisemitic imagery, in the form of a rat, a favourite Nazi shorthand for Jew.
That episode was a reminder that, much as we might want these categories to be neat and hermetically sealed – 'Zionism' over here and fair game for attack; 'Jews' over there and protected by anti-racism – the boundary between them is blurred and porous. A man in Washington was angry with Israel and it was a Jewish museum that ended up under deadly fire.
There are countless distinctions like that to be made; complex, apparently contradictory statements to be held in mind all at the same time. But it's impossible to see them when blinded by a rage and loathing that will not be quelled, when blinded by mutual hatred of biblical proportions. Agha no longer likes to speak in terms of peace or resolving the conflict, but rather of more modest 'arrangements' that might keep these furies in check. Either way, one way or the other, this needs to end.

It was unclear when the video was taken, but it shows national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for staging provocative encounters with Palestinians, telling Barghouti that he will 'not win'. 'Anyone who messes with the people of Israel, anyone who murders our children, anyone who murders our women, we will wipe them out,' Mr Ben-Gvir said in the video. He repeated those words in a post on X in which he shared the footage. Mr Ben-Gvir's spokesman confirmed the visit and the video's authenticity, but denied that the minister was threatening Barghouti. Barghouti, now in his mid-60s, was a senior leader in President Mahmoud Abbas's secular Fatah movement during the intifada. Many Palestinians see him as a natural successor to the ageing and unpopular leader of the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israel considers him a terrorist and has shown no sign it would release him. Hamas has demanded his release in exchange for hostages taken in the October 7 2023 attack that triggered the war in the Gaza Strip. In a Facebook post, Barghouti's wife said she could not recognise her husband, who appeared frail in the video. Still, she said after watching the video, he remained connected to the Palestinian people. 'Perhaps a part of me does not want to acknowledge everything that your face and body shows, and what you and the prisoners have been through,' wrote Fadwa Al Barghouthi, who spells their last name differently in English. Israeli officials say they have reduced the conditions under which Palestinians are held to the bare minimum allowed under Israeli and international law. Many detainees released as part of a ceasefire in Gaza earlier this year appeared gaunt and ill, and some were taken for immediate medical treatment.

‘What about our lives?': emotions run high in frontline Ukrainian city over ceding land to Russia
The city of Zaporizhzhia, an industrial hub in south-east Ukraine, is as good a place as any to grasp the stakes of freezing Russia's invasion of Ukraine along its current frontlines, or of implementing a 'land swap for peace' deal as envisioned by Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Since Russian troops began rolling into Ukraine in February 2022, Zaporizhzhia, with its broad avenues and Stalin-era apartment blocks, has been a 30-minute drive from the frontline. It has been under near-constant attack from missiles and drones. On Sunday, a Russian guided air bomb hit a bus station, wounding 24 people – just another day of suffering in a city that has known many of them. Plenty of people here and in other Ukrainian towns close to the frontline are so weary of the sleepless nights and disrupted lives of the past years that they are ready for Kyiv to sign a peace deal, even an imperfect one, if it means the attacks will stop. But many others have a very different opinion because they know first-hand what it means to give Russia control over Ukrainian territory: arrests, disappearances and the erasure of anything Ukrainian. As Moscow moves swiftly to Russify occupied territory, expelling or arresting active members of society and introducing new media outlets and school curricula heavy on propaganda, a few years of Russian control may make it almost impossible for Ukraine to regain these territories at a later date. About one in five people living in Zaporizhzhia are internally displaced, from places even closer to the frontline or from occupied parts of Ukraine. They are living in Zaporizhzhia until they are able to go home. On a recent visit to Zaporizhzhia, in a warehouse building where a group of volunteer women were making camouflage nets for the Ukrainian army there was a loud and resolute chorus of 'No!' in response to the question of whether people would be happy to freeze the lines in exchange for peace. 'And what about our homes, our lives, all the things we are waiting to go back for?' asked one of the women, quickly becoming tearful. 'Our only hope is for Ukraine to take them back, or we can never go home again.' Apparently on the agenda at a summit between Putin and Trump in Alaska on Friday is a proposal that goes even further: Putin has reportedly pitched the idea that Ukraine should give up the parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions it still holds, possibly in exchange for small parts of Kharkiv and Sumy regions held by Russia and the promise of a ceasefire – in essence, to swap Ukrainian land for other Ukrainian land. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ruled out the idea that the Ukrainian army would simply walk out of some territories and leave the population to Russian rule. But Trump has suggested it is a good idea, talking of land swaps as though they are an easy and fair solution. 'There'll be some land swapping going on. I know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody. To the good, for the good of Ukraine. Good stuff, not bad stuff. Also, some bad stuff for both,' Trump said on Monday. This idea of land swaps as a simple transaction belies the grim reality that would be likely to accompany such a move. In most of the discussions over a peace settlement in the Ukraine conflict, the fate of people has appeared to be afterthought, secondary to questions of land, military and security issues. The casual talk of land swaps has taken this even further. Russia's blueprint for how it works in occupied areas has been constant: it uses a mix of incentive and coercion to gain cooperation from local dignitaries. A minority of people welcome Russian rule and are happy to collaborate, others do so under pressure, while those who refuse are kicked out or arrested. In the building of a former technical institute in Zaporizhzhia, the mayors and local councils of towns in the region still under occupation work in exile, one to each room. Most of the mayors have stories of being put under pressure by Russias in the early days of the invasion, with some being arrested and threatened. In the room for Enerhodar, the town where the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is based, its mayor, Dmytro Orlov, said more than half of the town's population had left since 2022. He had first been asked nicely, then threatened, to work with Russian occupiers. After his deputy was arrested, he went into hiding and then fled to Zaporizhzhia. 'It became obvious I had to leave,' he said. Back then it was possible to cross the frontline but now it is sealed. On the day the Guardian visited, a man had just arrived at the office asking for help, having done a 10-day drive via Russia, Turkey and Europe to cover the short distance between Enerhodar and Zaporizhzhia. His brother had been jailed for helping the Ukrainian army; he himself had just been released from captivity. He had arrived in Zaporizhzhia with a couple of suitcases and nothing else and was appealing to the local authorities to help him start a new life. Every day there are new, similar stories as occupation ruins lives and splits up families. Many of those who resisted in the early days are still lost in Russia's network of torture facilities and prisons for Ukrainian detainees. More recently, those considered 'difficult' elements, such as teachers who refuse to teach the Russian curriculum, have been expelled from their homes and banned from 'Russian territory' for decades. Those who have left or been forced out of occupied regions have been replaced by new arrivals from Russia. 'The Russians have brought in a huge number of people,' said the regional governor, Ivan Fedorov. Some of them are pensioners from icy parts of Russia who are lured with the promise of a better climate; others are police, prosecutors, teachers and other functionaries who are brought in to prop up the occupation regime. The idea is that after a decade or two of population influx and the Russian school curriculum, few in these territories will consider themselves in any way Ukrainian. 'Their main goal is to change the gene pool of our towns,' Fedorov said. For many Ukrainians from occupied areas, ceding control to Russia in a peace deal would mean saying goodbye to their homes for ever.
