Lachlan Ilias act piles pressure on Shane Flanagan after brutal Dragons snub

Yahoo05-05-2025

Lachlan Ilias has responded to his axing having starred in the NSW Cup for his club with the Dragons going down to the Wests Tigers at NRL level. Dragons fans were left divided last week when coach Shane Flanagan opted to drop Ilias back to NSW Cup after their mauling at the hands of the Roosters.
The coach admitted a number of players could consider themselves fortunate not to be dropped, but Ilias was snubbed. This was controversial considering many felt Shane's son, Kyle Flanagan, was not living up to the hype in the No.6 jersey. Instead, it was the halfback that made way for Lyhkan King-Togia.
King-Togia put in a solid performance for the Dragons against the Wests Tigers and showed he is meant to play in the NRL. He recorded two try assists and two line break assists with his ball-playing a real highlight.
However, the Tigers still prevailed 34-28 and left the Dragons stranded on eight points. In the meantime, Ilias was a star in the Dragons' 60-26 win over the Magpies in NSW Cup.
Flanagan admitted Ilias would return to first-grade if he was able to find confidence again and it appears the youngster has started on the right path. Ilias found his running groove having scored two tries and ran for 102 metres in the victory. He also recorded a try assist of his own.
And it will be interesting to see how Flanagan reacts to Ilias' display. There were plenty of calls for King-Togia to remain in the No.6 jersey for the Dragons after the young star showed plenty of promising signs in his first game of NRL in 2025.
But if Ilias continues to find his form, and the Dragons don't, then it could be Kyle Flanagan facing the axe. Regardless, coach Flanagan has more selection decisions to make heading into round 10 as the Dragons take on the high-flying Warriors at home.

After plenty of speculation to why Ilias made way after the Roosters game, Flanagan said he wanted Ilias to rediscover his confidence back at NSW Cup level. "He's a first grade halfback, and he just needs to go and find a little bit of form and a bit of confidence," Flanagan said ahead of Magic Round.
"He's trying really hard, his kicking's been good and he'll go back. He's got a real good attitude, no one wants to get dropped but he'll go back and work hard and we'll see him again."
Ilias was at fault for an attempted 40/20 kick that went out on the full against Parramatta, and helped hand the Eels victory in golden point in round five. He also copped a public reprimand from the coach for failing to ice victory late on against Souths in round two, resulting in Braith Anasta to make a shock admission about his client's hopes of hanging onto the No.7 jersey.
And Ilias axing at the hands of King-Togia comes as a double-blow after the young gun signed a contract extension this week that shows he's part of the club's plans moving forward. Regardless, Flanagan was made to defend his decision and explained why his son held onto his jersey in the halves after the latest loss to the Roosters.
'But Kyle has been one of our best players this year,' the Dragons coach told . 'When that happens, it does make it easier. Kyle has scored four tries, and he's been setting up tries. His form has been fine... If he doesn't play well, he doesn't play. He'd be gone. There's no difference. I treat Kyle exactly the same as everyone else.'

Galvin ends month of headlines with try in Bulldogs win

Lachlan Galvin has announced his Canterbury arrival by scoring a try and taking over as halfback, helping the Bulldogs stay top of the NRL in a 30-12 win over Parramatta. After a fortnight of speculation around his playing position, Galvin was forced to wait 57 minutes before entering the field against the Eels on Monday. When the teenage recruit did come on, he did so at half, with off-contract No.7 Toby Sexton shifting to hooker, in the surest sign yet of the Bulldogs' long-term plan. Galvin responded by being heavily involved in Canterbury's attack, and linking with five-eighth Matt Burton in the lead up to a Viliame Kikau try to put the Bulldogs up 18-12. And, after Harry Hayes crossed to make it 24-12, Galvin capped his arrival in the No.23 jersey by scoring his first try in Bulldogs colours to seal the match. After putting fullback Connor Tracey into space on the right edge, Galvin backed up on the play and ran onto a Josh Curran pass to score after a Jacob Kiraz offload. A TRY FOR THE NEW BULLDOG... LACHLAN GALVIN 🗣️#NRLBulldogsEels Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRL (@NRL) June 9, 2025 Galvin had been one of the most divisive figures in rugby league for the past two months, such was the nature of his highly-publicised exit from Wests Tigers. But there was nothing but love from Bulldogs fans, with a crowd of 59,878 in Accor Stadium on Monday. The 19-year-old's name was chanted before he even entered the field and he earned a standing ovation as he ran on and again with each of his first touches. And the roar was enormous when he crossed late in the match, 10 days after officially putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal with the Bulldogs. Notable too was how impressive Sexton's kicking game was for Canterbury before Galvin came on. The Bulldogs' regular halfback also entered Monday under intense scrutiny, given he is off-contract and seemingly unlikely to now be re-signed. Canterbury were able to dominate field position for the majority of the match, only for Parramatta's resolute defence to keep them in the contest. Burton scored early for the Bulldogs when he picked off a Ryley Smith pass from a scrum and went 60 metres to score. But the Eels returned the favour moments later when Zac Lomax intercepted a Burton pass and put Mitch Moses into space to score a 90-metre try. The Bulldogs took a 12-6 lead back when Burton went to the shortside in the 20th minute and sent Marcelo Montoya over. However the match swung again when Viliame Kikau was sin-binned for dagerous contact on a kicking Moses just before halftime and the Eels levelled the score on the next set. Canterbury went 14-12 clear when Moses was penalised for a high shot in the 50th minute, before the Bulldogs ran away with it late with Galvin the centre of attention.

Maroons coach defends Mam selection

Maroons coach Billy Slater has defended his decision to choose controversial Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam in an extended 20-man Queensland squad for Wednesday week's State of Origin clash in Perth. On a day when Slater also confirmed the axing of 36-year-old Maroons skipper Daly Cherry-Evans, his selection of Mam – who isn't expected to make Queensland's match-day 17 but could be the 18th man – raised eyebrows, with the Broncos star having only recently returned from a nine-match NRL suspension after being banned for a drug-driving scandal that resulted in him being sent to rehab and fined $120,000. 'He's been doing a great job over the last few weeks since he's returned,' Slater said in explaining his selection of Mam. 'We feel that the squad will benefit from him being here. He's been a part of this squad before and I'm sure he'll take his opportunity if presented. 'I'm sure people will have their speculation around all the people selected.' Cherry-Evans' spot has gone to North Queensland Cowboys half Tom Dearden for a game the Maroons must win to keep the Origin series alive. 'It's just a case of the best person for the position,' Slater said. 'When you're in this position to make decisions, you have to think what's best for the footy team. We just feel Tom is the right person for the No.7 jersey right now. 'Obviously, Daly wanted to play and he was disappointed that he wasn't going to get the opportunity, but he took the news with great character and great respect. 'We had a good conversation. We've got a great relationship. 'You won't hear a negative word from me about Daly Cherry-Evans. What he's given this jersey and what he's done for this footy team in this group, that will be with all Queenslanders and with Daly for the rest of his life. 'No one can take that away from him.' Dearden's previous spot on the bench is set to go to Canterbury's Kurt Mann, while Warriors star Kurt Capewell is set to be included in the 17 at the expense of axed Gold Coast Titans forward Beau Fermor. Slater said the Maroons' new captain would be announced on Tuesday when the final 17 was confirmed. Maroons 20-man squad: Kalyn Ponga, Xavier Coates, Robert Toia, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Valentine Holmes, Cameron Munster, Tom Dearden, Mo Fotuaika, Harry Grant, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Kurt Capewell, Jeremiah Nanai, Pat Carrigan, Kurt Mann, Lindsay Collins, Reuben Cotter, Trent Loiero, Ezra Mam, Jack Howarth, Corey Horsburgh.

Sorensen's tackle could be season-defining: Panthers

Penrith players believe Scott Sorensen's match-saving tackle against Wests Tigers could prove season-defining, with their bid for an NRL five-peat still alive. Sorensen provided a hero's play late in the Panthers' win over the Tigers on Sunday, rushing from the other side of the field to stop Jahream Bula inches from the line. Prop Lindsay Smith then provided a similar effort on the next set, getting back to help deny Bula again with the Panthers leading 18-14. The Panthers' win meant they finished the round in 13th spot but just one point out of the top eight, after a horror start to the season had them sitting last after 12 rounds. Penrith players saw similarities between Sorensen's effort, and Viliame Kikau's famed effort to hold Melbourne's Justin Olam up after the siren in the Panthers' 2021 grand-final rematch. View this post on Instagram A post shared by NRL (@nrl) Kikau's desperate play has for years helped Penrith set the standards for success, and teammates believe Sorensen's effort on Sunday can have a similar effect. "We'll look back on that as a pretty defining moment. It was huge," fellow second-rower Liam Martin told AAP. "I remember the (Kikau) one, where he slid and held (Olam) up over the line. "It's just those little plays that you just value ... They're just little plays that probably not a lot of people notice, but they get so valued in our team. "It gives you so much confidence when you see stuff like that happening, your teammates doing that, and you just build energy off it." Penrith face a tough run ahead to keep their season revival on track, with a trip to Auckland without State of Origin players after the bye. They then face Canterbury off a five-day turnaround, before having the Bulldogs again, Melbourne and Canberra on their run home. Martin admitted the Panthers may have lacked that kind of desperation in their game as they went 2-6 to start the season, a point Nathan Cleary agreed with. "That's probably been the difference between winning and losing games," Cleary, who was involved in both tackles on Bula with Sorensen and Smith, said. "At the start of the year we weren't doing that at all and it was biting us in the butt a fair bit. "That's what we want our DNA and identity to be like. And we definitely applaud plays like that. "Then it starts to become something that happens just by DNA ... there were even a few of those last week (against Parramatta) as well." Sorensen, for his part, dodged the praise after Sunday's win. "It's no different to anyone else in this team," he said. "It's just doing your job, and tonight was my time to do my job. It's as simple as that."
