Bellingham says he will undergo shoulder surgery after Club World Cup
CHARLOTTE, June 22 (Reuters) - Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed on Sunday that he will undergo surgery to address a long-standing shoulder issue after the conclusion of the Club World Cup in the United States.
The 21-year-old, who has been managing the injury since 2023, has played through discomfort for both club and country. Real Madrid have scheduled the operation to follow the tournament, which concludes later this month.
Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund earlier this year, has frequently been seen wearing strapping on his shoulder during matches. The injury first flared up in a match against Rayo Vallecano, forcing him to miss two games for both Real Madrid and England late in 2023.
Speaking after Real Madrid's 3-1 victory over Mexico's Pachuca in the Club World Cup, Bellingham explained his decision to proceed with surgery. 'I've reached the point where the pain isn't so bad, but I was sick of playing with the sling,' he told reporters.
'I'm losing a lot of weight from sweating so much, and I've decided that I'll have surgery after the tournament. I've been waiting for a long time, and my patience is running out, but the physios and doctors have been incredible. I just want to feel free,' he added.
Despite his discomfort, Bellingham has been a key figure for Real Madrid since joining the club in the summer of 2023 from Borussia Dortmund, helping the Spanish giants win the LaLiga and Champions League double in his first campaign. The timeline for Bellingham's return remains unclear.

West Bromwich Albion to compete in Powerchair Football Club World Cup
As the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea compete in the USA, another international football tournament is flying under the radar this summer. The inaugural Powerchair Football Club World Cup kicks off in Paris on Monday, with West Bromwich Albion one of two teams representing England. The lesser-known sport sees teams of four use footguards on special powerchairs to dribble with the ball, pass and score goals. Albion winger Matt Gilbert believes it can suffer from a lack of opportunities, but he wants people to know how skilled players are. Mr Gilbert, from Tamworth, has been playing for 13 years, having discovered the sport thanks to a newspaper article. "It's just great to showcase people with disabilities and how competitive we can be playing at the highest level," he told BBC Radio WM. "It's such a big achievement for us and makes you feel quite proud to be representing Albion." The Baggies', which are supported by the Albion Foundation charity, will play their first game at the PRISME sports complex in Bobigny on have recently enjoyed success by winning their league five times and scooping a number of cups. But they are now set for their next big challenge, one that will see them competing against teams from France, Uruguay and Australia. But in a sport that is not regularly televised, it won't be easy for the Albion to work out their opponents and gain a competitive edge. In fact, they won't have seen many of their fellow teams play at all. Chris Gordon, from Kidderminster, is a player coach for the Baggies who has also turned out for the England national team. The goalkeeper explained that while the tournament would be tough, he was confident his team would rise to the challenge. "We're excited," he said. "It's the first tournament of its kind for our sport. "It's a new experience and one we're looking forward to.
