18-year-old admits to school threat
GOSHEN — A Goshen man has pleaded guilty to posting online threats against the school.
Andre Smith, 18, on Wednesday pleaded guilty to intimidation as a Level 6 felony. He was charged with two counts of intimidation after his arrest in September.
He entered the plea in Elkhart County Circuit Court ahead of a jury trial set for March 10. Judge Michael Christofeno accepted his plea and set sentencing for March 12.
Smith was arrested Sept. 18 while Goshen police were investigating a threat against Goshen Community Schools posted online at around midnight. The posts on the 'Nosy Neighbors of Michiana' Facebook group stated, 'Goshen high school students be ready' followed by several gun and devil face emojis, and 'My friend will take care of GPD also be ready boys in blue.'
Classes remained open that day though after-school activities and athletic practices were canceled. Police said only 21 percent of students attended school following the threat.
The Indiana State Police became involved in the investigation and obtained a search warrant to get more information about the account which posted the threat. They learned that the user's given date of birth was July 15, 2006, and GPS data indicated that the user was near the Winchester Trails community.
Comcast Internet provided police with the user's IP address and account information. The service provider said the user was Smith, who lived at 149 Winchester Trails, according to police.
Police confirmed Smith's name and address and executed a warrant at his residence shortly before 5 p.m. with help from the Elkhart County Regional SWAT unit. Smith was arrested and brought to the police department for questioning.
Smith admitted to creating the Facebook account and posting the threats against the school, according to police. He said he wanted to 'scare people that were mean to others' and used a pentagram profile picture to appear scarier.

40-year-old climber gets impaled while rappelling down mountain, UT officials say
A climber was taken to the hospital after getting impaled while rappelling down a mountain, Utah officials said. On Sunday, June 8, the 40-year-old man was rappelling in the Three Falls area near Alpine when he was impaled by a stick, according to a Facebook post from the Utah County Sheriff's Office. The man was lowering himself 'into brush and a branch or stick went through his upper thigh,' officials told Gephardt Daily. He was hoisted and airlifted by Intermountain Life Flight to a hospital for his treatment, officials said. Sgt. Raymond Ormond with the Utah County Sheriff's Office doesn't think the man — who was in serious but stable condition — fell. Instead, the climber 'rappelled onto the stick,' he told Gephardt Daily. Alpine is about a 30-mile drive southeast from Salt Lake City.

Missing Mississippi woman found after held captive, abused, for 3 weeks, authorities say
Authorities said a man was arrested in Mississippi after law enforcement said they discovered a missing woman at his home, where she had been held captive and abused for nearly three weeks. The Smith County Sheriff's Office worked in a joint operation with the Rankin County Sheriff's Office to investigate the case, as announced via two Facebook posts by both agencies on Monday, June 9. The Smith County Sheriff's Office said deputies received a call on May 12 from a "concerned mother" who was unable to reach her adult daughter in several weeks. The office said the mother "feared for her daughter's safety" and contacted authorities to report her daughter missing. Smith County investigators coordinated with Rankin County investigators, believing the missing woman was located at a home on Holly Bush Road in Rankin County. Deputies responded to the scene and confirmed the location of the missing woman. "During an on-scene investigation at the residence, deputies observed physical injuries to the missing female and facilitated her transport to a local hospital for treatment. An interview conducted with the female victim revealed that she had been held against her will at the residence for three (3) weeks while enduring near daily abuse," both agencies wrote in their posts. According to authorities, an examination conducted at the hospital showed the woman sustained "multiple broken bones in her face," along with "multiple contusions and lacerations on her body." Gilbert's intake date and age was not specified in the post. In addition, a search warrant was executed at the Holly Bush Road residence that resulted in the recovery of "a broom stick which had been fashioned in order to abuse the victim." Gilbert faces charges of aggravated assault and capital kidnapping. Gilbert is currently being held on a $600,000 bond at the Rankin County Detention Center.
