Then e-commerce arrived in the shape of a formidable new competitor—Amazon. Yet despite being written off at the time by pundits and investors as a retail dinosaur, Walmart has quietly reinvented itself as a tech company. Now it's fast closing the gap on Amazon, and its huge presence in the physical world may even give it the edge on its online rival.

'Canada is an independent, sovereign country': PM backs Carney against Trump
Keir Starmer will support Canada's determination to remain a sovereign independent nation, against pressure from Donald Trump for it to become America's 51st state. In a briefing to journalists en route to the G7 meeting of the leaders of wealthy democracies, Starmer said: 'Let me be absolutely clear: Canada is an independent, sovereign country and a much-valued member of the Commonwealth.' He is meeting Canada's new prime minister Mark Carney – who used to be governor of the Bank of England – in Ottawa today and tomorrow. Carney recently won Canada's general election by loudly and proudly telling Trump that his country will never be part of America. His defiance helped his party to eliminate its huge deficit in opinion polls. He added: 'One of the things I want to do is to open the door to taking out further…reducing our trade barriers with Canada. So I'm really clear where we stand on that.' Of the world leaders who will meet in Alberta on Monday and Tuesday, only Italy's Georgia Meloni probably has a closer relations to Trump. Starmer didn't rule out acting as a bridge or go-between between G7 leaders and the American president. He said: 'I have got a good relationship with President Trump, and that's important, as you can see from the fact that we had a discussion yesterday about the urgent situation in relation to Israel and Iran. 'I'm very pleased that I have developed good relations with all the G7 leaders to the point where I have very good relations with all of them.' He invented a viral watch-cleaning device. Now he says the American dream has been 'ripped out of my hands' by Trump tariffs.

June 15, 2025, 8:04 AM EDT By Rob Wile President Donald Trump's April 10 announcement that he was raising tariffs on China to 145% left Anthony Mendoza shattered. The 41-year-old Phoenix resident, father of two and veteran U.S. Army major had stumbled onto an invention that allows amateur antique watch aficionados to gently rinse a timepiece's components. He named it ChronoClean, and the device began to go viral. By last winter, Mendoza had sold out of his first 500 units. Yet with a single social media post, the president seems to have dashed Mendoza's plans for the future of his business. 'I really felt like my American dream had been ripped out of my hands,' Mendoza said. 'And that our own president and government was letting it happen.' Business breakdown The ChronoClean had gained traction online among a fast-growing amateur community of antique timepiece tinkerers, especially abroad. Unable to locate an affordable manufacturer in the United States, Mendoza had turned to Chinese producers, which allowed him to sell the device for $150 each. 'I tried to get it built here — that's what I wanted to do initially,' Mendoza said of manufacturing the product in the U.S. 'But I went to several companies, and every one I went to said, 'No way, we can't do that, it would cost $300 each just to make it for you.' So it was totally out of the realm of possibility.' A boost from a popular YouTube account in the timepiece community helped. After accounting for costs, Mendoza estimated that he earned about $60,000 in profit. Tariff troubles After selling out of his first batch of 500 units last winter, Mendoza said he had dialed up another 500 on Valentine's Day for production. Two weeks later, Trump's tariff escalations began. The president first imposed a total of 20% duties on exports from China in early March. Over the next several weeks, the level would steadily rise until it hit a high of 145% in the second week of April. At that point, Mendoza thought he'd have to abandon the ChronoClean entirely, just as the second set of products was ready to ship. The duties would stay at that three-figure level for about a month more, shaking global markets and keeping Mendoza awake at night. Having recovered from a devastating divorce and still unable to find steady work after retiring from a 20-year career in the Army, Mendoza had pinned his entrepreneurial hopes on the success of ChronoClean. Finally, on May 12, the Trump administration announced a breakthrough after trade talks between the U.S. and China in Geneva. That agreement brought the duty level back down to what was initially announced as 30%. Mendoza jumped, telling his Chinese liaison to immediately ship the units. Even at the newly lowered tariff level, Mendoza's shipping costs doubled from $1,100 on the first batch of ChronoClean devices to $2,650 for the second. Looking ahead To this day, Mendoza must grapple with the uncertain environment Trump's on-again, off-again tariff pronouncements have created. As a backup plan, Mendoza says he has routed some orders directly to the U.K. to avoid the U.S. duties. But it's an expensive hedge: Mendoza said it cuts into his bottom line. He remains anxious about further escalations from Trump. 'If it goes back to 145%, I won't be able to import my next shipment into the U.S.,' Mendoza said. He has a lead time of about five months, and has to be able to make decisions with certainty. 'Because they are selling so well, I need to start working on my next order now,' he said. A closer look at this moment in time Mendoza describes himself as having 'strong political feelings.' 'I don't like the way things are right now,' he said. He called the Trump administration's insistence on moving vast manufacturing operations from overseas to the U.S. 'a slap in the face' to small-business owners. 'It sounds great if you don't understand how logistics work. For my product, the reason it sells is because it's the cheapest you can buy,' Mendoza said, pointing to the reality that affordable manufacturing outside of the U.S. helps him keep his prices low for customers. As a single parent, Mendoza is working to try to put his two daughters through college. Between those expenses and funding ChronoClean, Mendoza said his financial cushion is thin. It's all the more wrenching given what he's gone through, he said. 'It's like, 'You've been deployed, you started as a private, retired a major, got through a horrible divorce, you're a great father and now you've started your own business and invented a product people want — they're begging for it,'' he said of ChronoClean. 'Then here comes your own government to shatter that dream, so big businesses and Elon Musk can get richer," Mendoza said. "To me, that's not the American dream. It's small business, middle America, everyone should have a good chance at this. [The tariffs] will potentially put me out of business, it's hard to wrap your head around it.' Why the Israel-Iran war could raise your taxes
If Rachel Reeves is to have any chance of making it to her autumn budget without U-turns or raising taxes, the improved economic forecasts of recent months need to come true. Missiles flying between Israel and Iran may destroy that hope. Things had been getting better for the Chancellor. Look at economic forecasts from the aftermath of Trump's 'liberation day', and there was a common theme when it came to Britain. Because of the nature of our economic relationship with America – as a massive exporter in services (we're their call centre) and with more or less balanced trade in goods – we would be shielded against the worst impacts of a trade slowdown. Global GDP growth would suffer, but the effects would not come to Britain. The real boon, if one was being positive, though was what effect these tariffs might have on inflation. While raising prices in the shops for American consumers, the view of the economic world was that for the UK they may in fact be disinflationary. That's because, as the consultancy firm Oxford Economics explained to their clients last month, dampening demand for commodities such as oil and gas would reduce the cost of products consumed in Britain. But all that was before the first Israeli missiles landed in Iran. A barrel of Brent crude now goes for over $70. On Monday it went for $65 – so there has been a 9 per cent in just five days. On Friday morning, it briefly spiked to nearly $80 in what was the sharpest price spike since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago. Within hours of Reeves delivering what director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies Paul Johnson yesterday called an 'incomprehensible' spending review speech, economists were warning that tax rises in the autumn were becoming likely. Just a day later, a worse-than-expected GDP contraction turned likely into very likely. If oil prices continue climbing as the war escalates, tax rises could become certain. Some 20 billion barrels of oil pass through the Strait of Hormuz, or about 30 per cent of total global trade. So it's easy to see how if Tehran tried to attempt to close the Strait – as Iranian news reports it is considering – or even attacked a few tankers, the oil price would quickly head northwards again. Indeed the FT reported yesterday that the world's largest oil tanker company has stopped accepting new contracts to sail through the Strait. If oil prices do continue to rise – and some say disruption in the Strait could send the price over $100 a barrel – it would be mere days before Brits start paying the cost at the petrol forecourt. But oil supplies are crucial to much more than petrol and diesel and taken together, it's easy to see how the rate of inflation remains sticky or even begins to rise again. Given that the bond markets are keeping the cost of UK debt far higher than the Treasury has been used to – much more because of inflation worries and the after effects of money printing than is understood in Westminster – any signal that prices were rising again are not going to give them faith in Britain as a debtor. If that were to happen and gilt yields remain high, or even climb further, then Reeves could find herself in heaps of trouble. It surprises many City economists just how unequivocal the government has been about sticking to fiscal rules and indeed keeping Labour's manifesto promise not to 'raise taxes on working people' given how hard that is when Reeves only has £9.9 billion of headroom. Before her Spring Statement the chancellor talked of the economic challenges posed by a 'changing world'. Things in the middle east have a habit of spilling over and the world seems to be changing again. Could this once more be the excuse the chancellor has to reach for?
