Snowing in Sydney? Huge $700million ski resort complete with slopes and chair lifts to be built in Penrith

Construction is set to begin on a $700million ski resort on the fringe of Australia's most populous city.
Builders have been approved begin the construction of Winter Sports World in Penrith, Sydney, later this year, after nearly a decade of delays.
The snow sport centre's design features 300m indoor ski run, competition venue and 200 room hotel on what is currently a horse paddock in western Sydney.
The exterior of the building features an 'ice shard' design and textured surfaces, as envisioned by architecture firm Collins & Turner.
'The undulating landscape will include features such as water streams, pathway networks, landscaped plantings and large 8m high message sticks to mimic melting ice and mountains telling the stories of the First Nations people and how they lived on (the Nepean River),' the project site states.
'As we get through the milestones, it's not easy, its quite complex,' developer Peter Magnisalis told Seven News.
Construction was meant to start in the beginning of 2025, creating 1,350 ongoing jobs.
'We're on target to be commencing late this year, our early work's on site,' Mr Magnisalis said.
He hopes the project could inject as much as $222million into the Western Sydney economy each year.
Elite snow athletes and Olympians could use the facility to hone their alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding skills.
It would be Australia's first indoor snow resort, following the lead of 150 other such developments around the world.
In 2024, NSW Premier Chris Minns said he welcomed the project.
'I can't think of a better place for Australia's first indoor ski resort than in Penrith. Winter Sports World will be Western Sydney's jewel in the crown of tourism attractions,' he said.
'I can't wait to see it enjoyed by people not just from our state, but from all around Australia and beyond.'
Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car was similarly enthusiastic.
'It just blows my mind that in a few short years we're going to have this opportunity for our kids to enjoy something we could have never dreamt about in Penrith,' she said, per TimeOut.
The first stage of the build will see a basement dug out to contain a water tank and snow machine.
Builders will then tackle the task constructing of the slopes themselves.
The project is now expected to open around 2028 to 2029.
It will follow the expected opening of Western Sydney Airport in 2026.

Lithium stocks rally as CATL mine halt raises prospects of tighter supply

Aug 11 (Reuters) - Shares of lithium producers surged on Monday after Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) ( opens new tab halting output at a major mine raised hopes it would erode the oversupply in a market grappling with soft demand. During morning trade, Albemarle Corp (ALB.N), opens new tab jumped 10.2%, while Chile's Sociedad Quimica y Minera ( opens new tab, rose 9.2% and Lithium Americas ( opens new tab, gained 2.4%. Smaller companies, Standard Lithium (SLI.V), opens new tab, , Piedmont Lithium (PLL.O), opens new tab and Sigma Lithium (SGML.V), opens new tab, advanced between 6.2% and 19.6%. Chinese and Australian miners also rallied. The lithium sector has been struggling with a glut following weaker-than-anticipated growth in demand for electric vehicles. The most active lithium carbonate futures in Guangzhou rose the 8% daily limit after CATL said its mining license for the Yichun project in Jiangxi province expired on Aug. 9 and renewal was underway. The site can produce more than 46,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent a year, roughly 3% of the global supply forecast for 2025, according to data from the Australian government. Morgan Stanley analysts said the outage could erode the small 60,000-tonne surplus it expects for 2025, bringing "upside risk to lithium prices in the short term" and potentially moving the market closer to balance if other disruptions follow. Longer-term, they expect a surplus to re-emerge without further supply discipline. Morningstar analyst Vincent Sun said the suspension was "an indication that the industry is taking proactive steps to contain further lithium price falls observed year-to-date." With lithium prices now below the marginal cost of production, the move could be perceived as a positive driver to limit supply growth and rebalance the market, he said, but added it was "still too early to confirm a price recovery trend for the rest of the year."

Norwegian ski jumpers charged over 'cheat' suits

Two Norwegian ski jumpers and three team officials have been charged following allegations of tampering with ski suits, the sport's governing body has medallists Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang have been charged with equipment manipulation in the men's large hill event at the World Ski Championships in Trondheim, Norway, in head coach Magnus Brevik, assistant coach Thomas Lobben and service staff member Adrian Livelten have also been charged following an International Ski Federation (FIS) at the time, FIS general manager Jan-Erik Aalbu said the team had "tried to cheat the system" by putting reinforced thread in the jumpsuits of Lindvik and 27, had originally finished second in the men's large hill event while 30-year-old compatriot Forfang came fourth, but both were disqualified after an equipment duo, plus Brevik, Lobben and Livelten were all provisionally suspended in March pending an FIS has not said when its ethics committee would issue a ruling, with the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina starting in on Monday, Aalbu said Lindvik and Forfang were unaware of the reinforced thread and questioned the decision to charge them."We have listened to our athletes and believe them when they say they did not know about the manipulation of the ski suits," Aalbu said."There is no evidence that they were aware of the manipulation that took place. We therefore disagree with FIS's assessment that there are grounds to bring a case against Forfang and Lindvik, but we respect the process."Lindvik won gold in the men's large hill individual at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, while Forfang claimed a silver medal at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang in the normal hill individual.
