Gujarat's women-led dairy societies surges by 21%, revenue hits 9,000 cr
By prioritising the cooperative model, the state has not only enhanced women's leadership in the rural economy but also strengthened the cooperative sector.
This approach, guided by Union Home & Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, emphasises the vital role of economically and socially empowering women as part of building a self-reliant India. Through these efforts, Gujarat exemplifies how cooperative models can uplift communities and foster sustainable development.
On the occasion of International Cooperative Day, the Government of Gujarat released inspiring statistics showcasing the rising participation of women in cooperatives across the state.
According to the release, between 2020 and 2025, the number of women-led dairy cooperative societies grew by 21% from 3,764 to 4,562.
According to the Gujarat Cooperation Department, women's leadership in the dairy sector is increasing significantly. In the year 2025, the board of the milk union had 25% of women as 82 directors, which reflects their active participation in the policy-making of milk unions. Furthermore, out of 36 lakh dairy producer members in Gujarat, approximately 12 lakh are women, accounting for nearly 32% of the total.
Not only that, during the same period, women's participation in the management committees of village-level cooperative societies has increased by 14%. The number of women in these committees has risen from 70,200 to 80,000, as stated in the release.
These women are now actively taking on key responsibilities such as policymaking, operations, and monitoring at the grassroots cooperative level.
On the special occasion of International Day of Cooperatives, data shared by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) reveals that milk procurement by women-led dairy cooperative societies in Gujarat has increased by 39%, from 41 lakh litres per day in 2020 to 57 lakh litres per day in 2025. This now accounts for approximately 26% of the state's total milk procurement.
Women-led dairy cooperatives in Gujarat have not only become a symbol of social transformation but also a significant contributor to the rural economy. In 2020, these cooperatives had an estimated daily revenue of 17 crore, amounting to approximately 6,310 crore annually.
Over the past five years, this figure has risen to 25 crore per day by 2025, surpassing the estimated annual revenue of 9,000 crore. This reflects a remarkable increase of 2,700 crore in revenue, a 43% growth during this period. This success stands as a strong testament to the empowerment of women through the cooperative model. (HT Archive) The Yashobhoomi Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, has won the International Architecture Award 2024 under the 'Civic Centre' category, which will be presented next month at the historic Acropolis in Athens, Greece, a globally recognised landmark in architecture. The prize is awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and The European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies. Dikshu C Kukreja, managing principal of CP Kukreja Architects, which designed the centre, said: 'Yashobhoomi embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a leading global hub.' Designed in collaboration with IDOM (Spain), Yashobhoomi spans 225 acres and has a built-up area of 2.2 million square feet. It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The venue, built at a cost of ₹5,400 crore, features multiple exhibition halls, auditoriums and conference rooms to host trade and diplomatic events. Kukreja said the Union ministry of commerce selected them for the global competition. The firm is renowned for designing the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Ambadeep Towers in Delhi. It was recently internationally recognised for designing the Madhya Pradesh state secretariat and Gautam Buddha University. Recalling that the project's conceptualisation involved close collaboration with retired IAS officer Amitabh Kant, who was also the G20 Sherpa, to ensure the facility could host high-profile gatherings, such as the G20 Summit. After the award was announced, Kant thanked the Prime Minister on the social media platform X, 'for the vision and opportunity to conceptualise and drive it as Secretary DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion)'. What sets Yashobhoomi apart, Kukreja said, is its fusion of modern technology with traditional Indian identity. 'It's easy to copy global examples from Germany, Korea, or the US; but for me, it was essential to root the design in India's ethos—through stepwell-inspired forms, jali screens, aangan-like light courts, and interiors steeped in Indian art and motifs.' He said the exhibition hall spans an area equivalent to four football fields. The venue features a 100-metre column-free span and the world's largest LED facade. 'The venue is also India's first to incorporate retractable seating that can transform a 6,000-seater hall into a flat-floored multi-purpose space at the touch of a button,' he said. Large venues like this often turn into 'white elephants' due to a lack of versatility. 'So, we ensured that the hall can have multiple uses,' he said. Kukreja said sustainability was a core design priority, and this secured the Indian Green Building Council's platinum rating. 'Steel was chosen to minimise localised pollution. This ensured durability and lower carbon impact, while featuring recycled materials, locally sourced granite and marble, and off-site fabricated glass-reinforced concrete,' he said. Kukreja said the award was more than personal recognition. 'This is about India creating architecture the world talks about and respects.'

79th Independence Day to be marked with ‘Naya Bharat' theme; PM Modi to lead celebrations at Red Fort
The central government on Wednesday announced 'Naya Bharat" as the theme for the upcoming 79th Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The theme reflects India's ambition to build a prosperous, secure, and self-reliant nation as it moves toward the government's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, an official statement said. On August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at the historic Red Fort and address the nation. This year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is the coordinating service for the national event, which will feature a ceremonial Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a special flypast carrying the national flag and the Operation Sindoor flag. Upon arrival at the Red Fort, PM Modi will be received by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Then the PM will be introduced to Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Delhi Area, who will escort him to the Saluting Base for the general salute and Guard of Honour inspection. The Guard of Honour, commanded by Wing Commander AS Sekhon, will comprise 96 personnel, including one officer and 24 members each from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and Delhi Police. After inspecting the Guard of Honour, Modi will proceed to the ramparts, where he will be greeted by the Chiefs of the three armed forces and the Chief of the Defence Staff. Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist the prime minister in hoisting the tricolour, which will be synchronised with a 21-gun salute from the 1721 Field Battery (Ceremonial) using indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns. The performances will be conducted by the bands of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NCC, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, SSB, BSF, IDS, RPF and Assam Rifles at over 140 prominent locations throughout the country. Approx. 5,000 Special Guests from different walks of life have been invited to witness the celebrations at the Red Fort this year. International experts back IAF chief's remark on downing of Pakistan jets
NEW DELHI: International military aviation analysts and historians have backed Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh's recent assertion that during Operation Sindoor the IAF shot down at least five Pakistani air force jets and one big airborne early warning aircraft. Amid denials by Pakistan, Tom Cooper, renowned Austria-based aerial warfare expert has said that what ACM Singh said was just a "confirmation of something that was more or less known since May", while also endorsing the latter's statement about the S-400 surface-to-air missile hitting targets at a distance of 300 km.
