PETALING JAYA: Large-scale operations against human trafficking in the early part of this year have seen over 100 victims rescued, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain (pic).
A total of 45 operations led to the arrest of 249 suspects, he said at the monthly assembly of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Bukit Aman yesterday.
'One hundred and forty-four victims were saved from the net of human exploitation under Section 44 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
'The CID also recorded successes in the implementation of Operation Cyber Guardian organised by the Singapore Police Force, involving Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
'The operation that ran from Feb 28 to March 28 also focused on dismantling online sex crime (networks) against children. This operation then led to the arrest of four suspects, including a civil servant, as well as the seizure of over 50,000 pieces of child sex abuse material,' he said.
The other suspects detained in the investigation were an accountant, a web designer and a telecommunications industry worker, Razarudin added.
'The arrest highlights the severe threat of cyber sexual crimes targeting vulnerable groups and reaffirm CID's unwavering commitment to combat these despicable offences,' he said.
The IGP also commended ongoing efforts against illegal gambling via Ops Dadu Khas.
'A total of 6,719 raids were conducted with 8,603 people arrested. We also seized 3,464 electrical devices, including computers and handphones, as well as RM1.6mil in cash,' he said.

Police arrest 13 under Sosma for communication cable theft targeting Selangor and KL's critical infrastructure

SHAH ALAM, May 30 — Police have arrested 13 individuals under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA), in connection with their involvement in communication cable theft, believed to be with intent to sabotage major communication systems in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that all suspects, arrested through Op Lusuh Mulia, committed these crimes along critical routes supporting government data infrastructure and the security sector. 'Disruptions to these facilities have the significant potential to affect the maintenance of telecommunication services and related communication infrastructure, thereby threatening public order. 'Therefore, all suspects will be further detained for a period not exceeding 28 days under the provisions of Section 4(5) of SOSMA to assist the ongoing investigation,' he said in a statement today. He added that the police are committed to combating crimes that can threaten national security and public well-being, while also calling for public cooperation to help curb criminal activities. The case is being investigated under Section 124 of the Penal Code. Previously, Hussein was reported to have said that five police personnel, including two Sergeants and three Corporals, were mastermminds behind cable theft activities around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for the past year. He stated that the police personnel, who were stationed at District Police Headquarters (IPD) and police stations around the two states, were among 16 suspects, including a woman, aged between 23 and 53, arrested for involvement in the syndicate known as 'Sindiket Mulia' (Mulia Syndicate), named after its leader. — Bernama

Abdullah Ang, inmate who had water bed in Kajang Prison, has died

PETALING JAYA: Ang Swee Kang, a former managing director of the now-defunct Malaysian Overseas Investment Corporation who sparked national outrage in 1989 for receiving luxury and privileged treatment while jailed in Kajang Prison, has died. Better known as Abdullah Ang, 79, he breathed his last on Wednesday (May 28) after a long illness. Ang, who was sentenced to eight years' jail and fined RM100,000 in 1986 for criminal breach of trust involving over RM338,000, was embroiled in another scandal just three years later during incarceration when an English-language daily revealed he was receiving special treatment in Kajang prison. It was reported that unbefitting for a prisoner, Ang's cell Was furnished with a carpet, refrigerator, TV, video player and a water bed. The newspaper also revealed that investigations revealed Ang, who was said to be close to the then-prime minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed, also frequently left prison grounds to manage his business in Kuala Lumpur. This triggered public uproar over preferential treatment for wealthy or well-connected inmates. Soon after, several prison officials faced inquiries and a shake-up of the Prisons Department followed. Ang's former legal adviser, Selva Sugumaran, who worked for Ang for over 25 years, told The Star that the businessman had been unwell for eight years and was frequently hospitalised. He said Ang had ventured into business soon after his release from prison and ran a latex glove manufacturing company. Selva, 64, said he and Ang stayed in touch over the years until his demise on Wednesday. Ang's funeral is scheduled for this coming Monday (June 2) in Kuala Lumpur.
