Cameron Highlands police arrest man in public disturbance, investigate viral assault video

Malay Mail30-05-2025
KUANTAN, May 30 — Police arrested a man for causing a public disturbance in the Centrum area of Brinchang, Cameron Highlands, on Wednesday.
Cameron Highlands police chief Deputy Superintendent Azri Ramli said they received a call regarding the incident around 11 pm on May 28.
'Upon arriving at the scene, a 42-year-old man was found to be acting aggressively. Efforts to calm him down were unsuccessful and we had to use minimal force, in accordance with the standard operating procedures, to ensure the safety of the public and officers,' he said in a statement today.
A background check revealed that the man had been reported missing in Bera since May 22, and preliminary investigations suggest that he is believed to be suffering from mental illness.
'After contacting his family, police brought him to the hospital for treatment, where he was confirmed to have mental illness. Following treatment, the man was handed over to his family and taken to Bera,' he added.
Meanwhile, Azri said police are tracking down an individual believed to have punched the man in a video that has gone viral on social media. — Bernama

With e-waste surging, DOE urges stronger action from state governments against illegal dumps

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Malaysia is seeing a steady rise in electronic waste (e-waste) generation consistent with the country's growing dependence on digital devices, the Department of Environment (DOE) said today. Its director-general, Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar, revealed that from January 1, 2021, to June 30 this year, a total of 536,709 metric tonnes of e-waste were processed by licensed facilities nationwide. 'If e-waste is not properly managed and is disposed of indiscriminately, it can have serious implications for human health and the environment,' he said during the department's media engagement session today. To improve e-waste management, Wan Abdul Latiff said the number of licensed recovery facilities has been expanded to 128, public awareness campaigns have been strengthened, and enforcement against unlicensed handlers has been intensified through special operations codenamed 'Ops Hazard.' The director-general also issued a strong call for state governments, local councils, and land offices to crack down on illegal factories and unauthorised waste dumping sites. He said many illegal factories continue to operate unchecked until they cause significant environmental harm. 'These operations should be shut down early, not after pollution has already occurred. The same applies to illegal dumpsites that catch fire,' he asserted. When asked, Wan Abdul Latiff explained that the DOE does not have complete records on the number of illegal factories, as many are only detected during monitoring activities or through intelligence provided by other agencies. He highlighted the scale of the challenge, noting that in one recent integrated operation, 90 per cent of the 122 factories raided were found to be operating illegally. Wan Abdul Latiff also shed light on the manpower shortages hindering the department's enforcement capabilities. 'Right now, we have only 1,113 officers for all of Malaysia, and we are expected to monitor everything. But with our current staffing levels, it's just not feasible,' he said, explaining that his officers are responsible for a wide range of environmental issues beyond just air pollution. He confirmed that the DOE has formally submitted a request to the Public Services Department for the creation of up to 3,000 new positions to address this shortfall.

13MP to widen ‘pro-health tax' to cover tobacco, vapes, alcohol

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Malaysia will expand its 'pro-health' tax beyond sugary products to include tobacco, vapes, and alcohol, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today as part of healthcare reforms in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). While tabling the plan in Parliament, Anwar said the tax expansion is intended not just to boost government revenue but, more importantly, to encourage a behavioural shift and curb the worrying increase of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country. NCDs, often linked to unhealthy lifestyles, include diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer. Anwar said healthcare as a government priority, noting that the public system is increasingly burdened by medical inflation, a rise in both communicable and NCDs, and an ageing population. The reforms aim to ensure sustainable funding and wider access to quality, affordable healthcare, he said. He said the local manufacturing of medicine will be encouraged, while both public and private healthcare sectors would increase the use of generic medicine, in order to ensure availability. With the 13MP allocating RM40 billion from the government for the healthcare sector over the next five years, Anwar said this will help reduce Malaysians' 'out of pocket expenses' when obtaining healthcare services. Among other things, Anwar said efforts will be made to retain talents within the public healthcare sector, including pre-service training, licensing and registration, intake, placement and career development. He said the management of health records will also be strengthened as a core of the digitalising of Malaysia's healthcare system. This would contribute to the generation of high-impact health analytics enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) as part of efforts to enhance the quality of healthcare provided to Malaysians, he explained. He said the government would also carry out more projects to build and upgrade government clinics and public hospitals, including Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar 2 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan; Hospital Sultanah Aminah 2 in Johor Bahru, Johor; the Northern Region Cancer Centre at Sungai Petani, Kedah; the Sabah Heart Centre at Hospital Queen Elizabeth II at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah; and the Sarawak Cancer Centre.
