Lewis Hamilton's Canadian Grand Prix unravelled early and the culprit wasn't a rival car, a pit stop blunder, or the weather. It was a groundhog.

Hamilton, who was running well inside the top five, suffered a mysterious loss of pace after Lap 13. Sky Sports F1's Karun Chandhok later revealed that Hamilton had been carrying car damage from that moment on, specifically, a 20-point loss of downforce.
The shocking reason? A collision with a groundhog that had wandered onto the track.
As the race wore on, Hamilton's Ferrari lacked its usual punch. He was overcut by both Lando Norris and teammate Charles Leclerc, slipping to seventh by Lap 30. Frustrated on team radio, Hamilton confessed, 'I'm nowhere in this race, mate. I don't know what's happened.'
Lewis Hamilton during previews ahead of the Monaco GP.While the Ferrari garage confirmed the damage, the origin contact with wildlife caught many off guard. Canada's circuit, built on man-made island, is notorious for its roaming groundhogs, and Hamilton appears to have paid the price for one unlucky encounter.

The incident not only wrecked his Sunday but also served as a reminder of how even the most unexpected elements of wildlife in this case can dramatically influence a F1 race.
Fans were quick to react with disbelief and sympathy, both for the animal and for the seven-time world champion, whose Montreal weekend ended in quiet frustration.

MLB Announces Ronald Acuna Jr. News Before Braves-Mets

MLB Announces Ronald Acuna Jr. News Before Braves-Mets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are set to begin a three-game divisional series on Tuesday at Truist Park, but star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was in the news for something else on Monday. Advertisement Acuna and the Braves took two of three games from the lowly Colorado Rockies over the weekend, just like the Milwaukee Brewers before them. Those victories have helped raise Atlanta's record to 4-9 in June after an 0-7 start to the month. Last week, the 27-year-old Acuna continued to dominate opposing pitching, going 13-for-21 (.619 average) with three home runs, six RBIs, eight runs scored and a stolen base, his first of the season after making his debut on May 23. For his efforts, Major League Baseball presented him with an honor on Monday. Through his first 21 games this season, Acuna is batting a stellar .390 with an 1.179 OPS. He has added seven home runs, 13 RBIs, 13 walks and 18 runs scored despite the Braves' inconsistency in the win column. Thunder Make NBA History After Game 4 Win Over Pacers

Thunder Make NBA History After Game 4 Win Over Pacers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Oklahoma City Thunder flirted with disaster in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. However, in the process of avoiding a worst-case scenario, they made NBA history. Advertisement After a tight contest throughout the first three quarters of Game 4, the Thunder were catapulted to a decisive 111-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers after a strong 31-17 fourth quarter. The win evened up the NBA Finals at 2-2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was held without an assist for the first time in the entirety of 2024-25 NBA season. However, this season's MVP did deliver his usual dosage of scoring medicine, dropping 35 points. It was the first time since 1962 that an NBA Finals game featured a performance that involved a player scoring 35-plus points and no assists. Jerry West was the last player to be in that elusive club. That was not the only piece of history in this matchup for the Thunder. They set a new standard for an NBA team in a single season. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2) shoots the ball against Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton (0) during the first half during game three of the 2025 NBA Finals at Gainbridge Terada-Imagn Images The NBA posted on Twitter/X, "After tonight's game, the Thunder have scored 12,205 points, setting a new NBA record for most total points scored across the regular season and postseason, passing the 2018-19 [Golden State] Warriors (12,161)." Advertisement The Thunder are the new benchmark for scoring excellence in league history. Oklahoma City averaged 120.5 points in the regular season, and have continued that success with 116.2 in the NBA Playoffs. There could be one key reason for the Thunder not wanting to be in the same company as the 2018-19 Warriors, though. That iteration of the Golden Dynasty wound up losing the 2019 NBA Finals. Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors took down the Warriors in six games to win the Larry O'Brien trophy that season. However, the Thunder have already better-positioned themselves in an aim to avoid a similar disaster. The 2019 Warriors fell behind 3-1 in their NBA Finals matchup. Meanwhile, after setting the new scoring mark, the Thunder will head home to Oklahoma City for a pivotal Game 5 matchup with the series tied. Ravens Star Key to Defeating Father Time in 2025

Ravens Star Key to Defeating Father Time in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens will enter the 2025 season with one of the best rosters in football and some of the highest expectations. Once again, it's Super Bowl or bust for Baltimore, and with high-profile stars on both sides of the ball, the bar has justifiably been set. Advertisement In 2024, the Ravens were the second-most dangerous team in football on the ground, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles and 2,000-yard rusher Saquon Barkley. The addition of Derrick Henry gave them a closer, a punishing back who can make sure the four-minute offense operates well. Henry rushed for 1,921 yards and 16 touchdowns and contributed 139 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. If there's a hitch in Baltimore's plan, Bleacher Report suggests it would be Henry struggling in 2025. 'Father Time finally catches up to a 31-year-old Derrick Henry just after signing a big, new contract, and the Ravens move in the wrong direction as a result,' Brad Gagnon wrote. However, Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson is key to Baltimore surviving regression from its starting running back. Advertisement The biggest risk in paying Henry is the opportunity cost of signing another contributor in a Super Bowl window. At 31, it's entirely possible that he stumbles down the cliff awaiting so many running backs. But even a diminished version of Henry isn't likely to be a detriment to the offense. The Ravens' run game was elite with Henry in 2024, finishing second in the league in expected points added per rush. In the four preceding seasons, Baltimore ranked first, 11th, second and third, respectively. This offense doesn't need Henry at his best to be elite. He makes them more dangerous in January and is a significant part of the team's plans, but Jackson's mobility has made every backfield configuration a strong one. There's no reason why that shouldn't continue in 2025. Henry has proven to be an outlier in his aging and durability. He should be expected to dominate again with Jackson's gravity making his life easier. Advertisement It goes without saying that the worst-case scenario for the Ravens is Jackson going down. In virtually any scenario, the two-time NFL MVP has the talent to weather the storm.
