Nigeria's 2026 World Cup bid falters as SA strengthen position

BBC News25-03-2025

Nigeria's hopes of a place at the 2026 Fifa World Cup are back in the balance after Zimbabwe netted a last-minute equaliser to leave the West Africans off the pace in Group C.A diving header from Victor Osimhen had put the Super Eagles on the brink of a second successive victory, but on-loan Huddersfield forward Tawanda Chirewa stunned the home crowd in Uyo when he poked past Stanley Nwabali in the 90th minute. After six rounds of the 10-match group campaign Nigeria have slipped to six points behind leaders South Africa, who secured a 2-0 away win against Benin through efforts from Burnley striker Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams.Nigeria, who missed out on the 2022 finals in Qatar, are fourth in the group, a point behind Rwanda and Benin.Only the nine group winners will qualify for the expanded 48-team tournament next year. The four best second-placed sides will play off for a spot at an intercontinental tournament which will decide the final spots in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Cape Verde moved four points clear at the top of Group D after Dailon Livramento's double gave the Blue Sharks a 2-1 win away in Angola.Cameroon can cut that lead to one point if they beat Libya at home later (19:00 GMT).Uganda moved up to third in Group G and three points off table-toppers Algeria as Allan Okello's stunning first-half free-kick was enough to secure a 1-0 home win over Guinea. There are a total of 10 more games in the sixth round of qualifiers to be played on Tuesday, with Egypt, Senegal, Morocco and Algeria among the sides in action. The final four rounds of group fixtures will be spread across September and October, with African play-offs scheduled for November.
Chiwera stuns Super Eagles
After failing to win their first four games in Group C, pressure had been on Nigeria and their new coach Eric Chelle to take maximum points from their two fixtures this month.Nigeria started with purpose against Zimbabwe, forcing visiting goalkeeper Washington Arubi into six saves in the opening 10 minutes.Osimhen, who struck both goals in the 2-0 win over Rwanda on Friday, saw a volley from an acute angle tipped behind and his header from the resulting corner brilliantly clawed away. After Alex Iwobi and substitute Tolu Arokodare had gone close it looked like Osimhen had given the Super Eagles another vital three points when he converted Ola Aina's cross in the 74th minute.Zimbabwe almost levelled straight away when Nwabali failed to claim a cross from the left and Knowledge Musona stabbed against the crossbar. And, after the Warriors silenced the Uyo crowd when Chirewa placed a calm finish under Nwabali at the death, Nigeria now need other results to go their way to force themselves back into contention.

West Ham hold transfer talks for ex-Man Utd target Chelsea tried to sign

Gambian attacker Adama Bojang was previously eyed by the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in the summer of 2023 West Ham are weighing up a potential swoop for Gambian wonderkid Adama Bojang. The exciting 21-year-old forward previously caught the eye of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in 2023 before later joining French side Stade Reims. It's understood Chelsea were willing to pay up to £1million for his signature in a deal that would have seen Bojang land at Strasbourg, however, Blue Co did not wish to bid higher than that figure and Reims eventually wrapped up an agreement worth in the region of £3m. ‌ Bojang spent last season on loan in Switzerland with Grasshopper Club Zurich where he struck six goals and provided two assists in 27 appearances. In April, he struck a hat-trick against FC Luzern and also hit a brace against INEOS-owned FC Lausanne-Sport in February. ‌ The Gambia U20 international is widely regarded as one of the best African talents of his generation and was also courted by the likes of RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim before sealing his switch to France two years ago. Now he could be on the move again following Reims' relegation to Ligue 2 which means they will have no choice but to reluctantly listen to offers in a bid to raise funds. Earlier this week, West Ham, who have been tracking the player for some time, held talks over a move and according to sources, Bojang is expected to be available for a price in the region of £10m to £11m. But the Hammers are not the only Premier League club interested as Everton and Brentford have also made enquiries for the highly-rated attacker, who is being tipped to make an impact in one of Europe's top-five domestic leagues. West Ham are keen to strengthen their forward line and have also looked at 22-year-old Rangers star Hamza Igamane. The club's head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay has been tasked with identifying targets for Graham Potter as the duo look to make wholesale changes to West Ham's underperforming squad. ‌ Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika is another player of admiration while West Ham are also chasing the signing of a new goalkeeper following the departure of Lukasz Fabianski with Aaron Ramsdale among the names under consideration. They will also need to replace the likes of Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal, Danny Ings and Kurt Zouma who will officially depart the London Stadium at the end of the month as free agents. It's been a slow start to summer business as the West Ham hierarchy are looking to use sales to supplement their transfer budget but they have already rejected an informal approach from Chelsea for Mohammed Kudus which included the chance to sign multiple Blues stars as part of a potential swap deal. Kudus' West Ham release clause is only active from July 1 to July 10. Join our new WhatsApp community! Click this link to receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. England Under 21 star REJECTS Burnley offer to join former Man United star at European giants

Defender CJ Egan-Riley has joined Marseille after rejecting a new contract at Burnley. The 22-year-old played a key role in the Clarets' promotion to the Premier League but has chosen to make the switch to Ligue 1. Marseille announced the signing on Saturday after Egan-Riley passed a medical, and he will link up with his new club following the conclusion of England's campaign at the European Under 21 Championship. Burnley revealed earlier this week that Egan-Riley had rejected a 'significant long-term contract' at Turf Moor.
