Hit-and-run driver mows down 55-year-old man crossing Brooklyn street
A hit-and-run driver killed a 55-year-old man crossing a Brooklyn street early Saturday, police said.
It was one of two fatal crashes to take place Saturday morning in the five boroughs, police said.
The victim was crossing Washington Ave. at Fulton St. in Clinton Hill about 12:20 a.m. when a burgundy-colored Ford Explorer heading west on Fulton St. rammed into him, cops said.
The driver of the Ford Explorer sped off without stopping, stunned witnesses told police.
EMS rushed the victim to New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, but he couldn't be saved. The man's name was not immediately released as cops tracked down family members.
No arrests have been made.
In an unrelated incident about an hour after the Clinton Hill crash, a 22-year-old driver died when his Infiniti G37 veered into oncoming traffic and slammed into a parked city sanitation truck in Queens, cops said.
The motorist was heading north on Douglaston Parkway outside Alley Pond Park in Bayside about 1:45 a.m. when he listed into the southbound lane — straight into the front of an unoccupied city sanitation truck outside the city Department of Sanitation's Queens garage.
He died at the scene. His name was not immediately released.
No other cars were involved in the crash, cops said.
Saturday's crash in Brooklyn was the second fatal hit-and-run in the borough in a week, cops said.
On May 10, Larry Maxwell was crossing the street outside his longtime home in Brownsville's Langston Hughes Houses to attend a family event at the nearby Dr. Green Playground when he was struck by a driver fleeing a fender-bender. The driver has not been caught, cops said.
The city has seen a 19% decrease in fatal crashes this year, although the number of pedestrians killed by motor vehicles have increased slightly, cops said.
As of Thursday, cops have investigated 40 fatal pedestrian crashes — two more than this time last year, according to police.

Mason man renovates memorial for murdered 7-year-old boy
WILLIAMSTON, Mich. (WLNS) — Almost 20 years after the tragic murder of 7-year-old Ricky Holland, a Mason man has now renovated the young boy's memorial with the hope of keeping his memory alive. Ricky Holland's memorial sits on the side of the road, near the intersection of Williamston Rd. and Ewers Rd, now with a fresh new coat of paint and flowers. Holland went missing back in July of 2005. After months of searching, his body was finally found in the Dansville State Game Area. His adoptive parents, Lisa and Tom Holland, were arrested for the murder and sentenced to prison. Michigan native, Kyle Ammerman, says while driving home, he spotted the old cross, and wanted to help. 'It's an honor for me to do it. I was an EMS. You see a lot of tragedies in the area. I'm doing this out of love for the families and for the people who have passed away,' said Kyle Ammerman. He says the memorial was severely damaged. 'It was just a plain white cross. It had a lot of damage to it. The cross piece was all rotted,' said Ammerman. 'So, I decided to put a new cross piece in, paint it up.' Ammerman says he was in Mason when he first heard about the case. 'I was watching the news. Followed it on a daily basis,' said Ammerman. 'A lot of volunteers searched for this little boy. Parents, anybody that was available.' He says he even remembered the day Holland's body was found. 'That dreadful day. That will never go away,' said Ammerman. So, he does all he can to make sure no one forgets about seven-year-old Ricky Holland. 'It's sad that there are people out there that would do this to an innocent child, and finally be found guilty of what they did,' said Holland. Pregnant woman injured when impaired driver crashed into apartment in Braxton County: WVSP
SUTTON, (WBOY) — Two people were injured in Sutton, West Virginia when a driver who was allegedly under the influence crashed into their porch while they were eating dinner on Saturday. Troopers with the West Virginia State Police were called to a home on North Hill Road in Sutton where a vehicle had crashed around 5 p.m. on June 7, according to a press release. Troopers said that a Cadillac driven by Marilee McKenzie, 57, of Lucasville, Ohio, crashed into the front porch of an apartment where a couple was having dinner. Both of the people on the porch were injured and transported by EMS to Braxton County Memorial Hospital, including a 44-year-old pregnant women who 'suffered a significant laceration to her leg,' according to the complaint. WV Prosecuting Attorneys Association 'setting record straight' on criminal penalties from miscarriages 'Fortunately, medical staff indicated that her unborn child was unharmed,' troopers said. 5-year-old brought back to life by officers responding alarm call, NC cops say
Two police officers are being hailed as heroes after they investigated an alarm going off and ended up bringing an unresponsive child back to life. It happened June 1 in Shallotte, and police officials say it was pure luck that the officers were in the right place at the right time. 'Sergeant Jeremy Ferguson and Officer Christopher Brown ... responded to an alarm at the Cardinal Pointe Clubhouse. While on scene, a bystander alerted them to an unresponsive child in the pool,' the Shallotte Police Department wrote in a June 4 Facebook post. 'Sergeant Ferguson checked for a pulse and called for EMS. Officer Brown initiated CPR, cycling compressions and draining water from the child's airway. After approximately three minutes, the child began breathing on her own.' The 5-year-old girl lives in the apartment community and had been at the pool with her mother and grandmother when she lost consciousness due to 'sucking in a bunch of water,' a police official told McClatchy News in a phone interview. Family members were trying to revive the girl when her grandmother saw the two officers and ran to them for help, officials said. Once revived, the girl was taken to a hospital and stayed overnight due to fluid in her lungs, police said. As for the alarm the officers came to investigate, it proved to be a false alert and no burglary was in progress, officials said. The two officers were honored with Life Saving Awards at the town's June 3 board meeting for their 'swift and heroic actions' and 'demonstrating exceptional bravery and quick thinking in the face of danger,' officials said. Both officers have served 16 years in law enforcement, officials said. Brown has been with the Shallotte police four years and Ferguson has been with the department three years. Shallotte is about a 165-mile drive southeast from Raleigh, near the border with South Carolina.
