5-year-old brought back to life by officers responding alarm call, NC cops say

Two police officers are being hailed as heroes after they investigated an alarm going off and ended up bringing an unresponsive child back to life.
It happened June 1 in Shallotte, and police officials say it was pure luck that the officers were in the right place at the right time.
'Sergeant Jeremy Ferguson and Officer Christopher Brown ... responded to an alarm at the Cardinal Pointe Clubhouse. While on scene, a bystander alerted them to an unresponsive child in the pool,' the Shallotte Police Department wrote in a June 4 Facebook post.
'Sergeant Ferguson checked for a pulse and called for EMS. Officer Brown initiated CPR, cycling compressions and draining water from the child's airway. After approximately three minutes, the child began breathing on her own.'
The 5-year-old girl lives in the apartment community and had been at the pool with her mother and grandmother when she lost consciousness due to 'sucking in a bunch of water,' a police official told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
Family members were trying to revive the girl when her grandmother saw the two officers and ran to them for help, officials said.
Once revived, the girl was taken to a hospital and stayed overnight due to fluid in her lungs, police said.
As for the alarm the officers came to investigate, it proved to be a false alert and no burglary was in progress, officials said.
The two officers were honored with Life Saving Awards at the town's June 3 board meeting for their 'swift and heroic actions' and 'demonstrating exceptional bravery and quick thinking in the face of danger,' officials said.
Both officers have served 16 years in law enforcement, officials said. Brown has been with the Shallotte police four years and Ferguson has been with the department three years.
Shallotte is about a 165-mile drive southeast from Raleigh, near the border with South Carolina.

Tinder user sends woman unsolicited video of child sex abuse in CA, feds say

A California man faces at least 15 years in federal prison after prosecutors said he sent an unsolicited video of an adult sexually abusing a young girl for 17 seconds to a woman he met on the dating app Tinder. Ricardo Gutierrez, 28, first sent her a photo of a different girl, estimated to be around 6- to 8-years-old, with 'three face with hand over mouth iMessage emojis,' and asked whether she had 'little girls' as neighbors or nieces, according to prosecutors. 'I need a girl…Young girl…,' Gutierrez is accused of writing to the woman. She reported Gutierrez to law enforcement, leading authorities to uncover his involvement in sexually exploiting children, prosecutors said. An investigation revealed that in April 2024, about a month before meeting the woman over Tinder, Gutierrez sexually exploited four young children, including a toddler, in two videos he filmed in Tehama County, about a 130-mile drive northwest from Sacramento, according to court documents. 'Gutierrez screen recorded himself and the child victims on video through Facebook Messenger,' prosecutors said. Now, Gutierrez, of Red Bluff in Tehama County, has pleaded guilty to one count of child sexual exploitation, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California said in a June 6 news release. His court-appointed federal public defender, Douglas J. Beevers, didn't immediately return McClatchy News' request for comment June 9. Gutierrez was found with more than 4,800 images of adults sexually abusing children, as well as children engaged in sex acts with other children, on his phone, according to prosecutors. Between November 2023 and July 2024, prosecutors said he shared child sexual abuse content over three messaging platforms: iMessage, Telegram and WhatsApp. In a separate case involving Telegram and child exploitation in Washington State, federal prosecutors announced on June 2 that a man, described as a 'repeat violent sex offender,' was sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with a Telegram group he ran to arrange 'pedophilic relationships,' McClatchy News reported. Alan Lewis Meirhofer, 72, was caught sharing child sexual abuse content over Telegram and trying to 'set up' his adult friends, other registered sex offenders, with minors, according to prosecutors. Telegram, with its 'end-to-end encryption' feature, offers a certain level of privacy for text messages and video calls. The platform's CEO Pavel Durov was arrested by authorities in France in August in connection with alleged crimes facilitated over the app, including child sexual abuse material being exchanged among users, Axios reported. As for Gutierrez, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and up to 30 years in federal prison on one count of child sexual exploitation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. He also faces a lifetime of supervised release, a restitution order and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is set for Sept. 12, prosecutors said. Concerns or suspicions about child sexual exploitation can be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline online or by calling 1-800-843-5678.

‘Senseless ambush' kills mom of 5 at drum circle, OR reports say. Man convicted

A man has been convicted in a 'senseless ambush' that killed a woman at a drum circle event in Oregon, officials said. Wyatt Storm Belcher, 28, was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in Ash Smith's death following a jury trial, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said in a June 6 news release. McClatchy News reached out to Belcher's attorney June 9 and was awaiting a response. The shooting happened May 8, 2022, near the Willamette River in Portland, prosecutors said. The drum circle gathering began to break up, and 'multiple witnesses heard a loud bang and saw Ash Smith fall to the ground,' according to prosecutors. Multiple witnesses gave statements to police, prosecutors said, 'including descriptions of the person who shot Ms. Smith.' Belcher matched the descriptions and was found nearby, according to prosecutors, who said he had 'a .40 caliber Glock 23 holstered in his waistband.' Belcher and Smith were strangers to one another, KOIN reported, citing police. Smith, 31, was described in an online obituary as 'loving, energetic, and a true warrior.' The mom of five 'continuously fought for her place in this world, despite being given a bad hand time and time again' and she 'had an infectious laugh and was always a source of positivity, seeing the good in anybody,' the obituary said. In the news release, Deputy District Attorney Devin Franklin said, 'Ash Smith was truly an innocent victim. While she didn't deserve Wyatt Belcher's senseless ambush, she did deserve the compassion that the witnesses on scene showed her during her final moment. Three of those individuals had the strength to testify during this trial despite being deeply and personally affected by what they witnessed.' A sentencing hearing is scheduled June 9, according to online court records.
