Michelle Obama's relationship advice for her daughters: 'Date a lot'
She said that dating widely meant she had experiences to "compare" Barack Obama to when he came along.
"And if you run into a bad date or have a bad experience, move on quickly. Don't stay around," she said.
Michelle Obama isn't afraid of a little trial-and-error, even when it comes to relationships.
During the Wednesday episode of her "IMO" podcast, which she cohosts with her brother, Craig Robinson, Obama spoke about dating and the guidance she shares with her two daughters regarding matters of the heart.
Her main piece of advice? Date a lot.
"I just try to get them to stay open to people, right?" Obama told Robinson. "The thing that I did do was date a lot. And so when Barack showed up, I had experiences to compare him against. Like, I knew a lot of the 'I didn't like this, I didn't like that.'"
Obama said she and her husband, Barack Obama, often shared stories from their own dating past to help their daughters learn what to look for and what to avoid.
"My whole thing is, date a lot. And if you run into a bad date or have a bad experience, move on quickly. Don't stay around. It's like, if it's not working, next," Obama said.
In 2023, Obama said that it took her some time to get used to her and her husband's different love languages. He is more verbally and physically affectionate, while she prefers acts of service and quality time, she said.
"One of the things that's different in how we show love is that because his family lived far away, and traveled a lot, he had to learn to love at a distance," Obama said. In contrast, her family was "always together."
Dating coaches and relationship therapists shared their top dating tips with Business Insider in 2022. These included strategies like starting a date with a compliment, practicing flirting with eyes, and ending a first date with a subtle "accidental" touch.
A representative for Obama did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.

Kourtney Kardashian Responds to Backlash for Having Son, 21 Months, on a Boat Without a Life Vest: I 'Honestly Didn't Think'
'Thank you for making me aware," the mom of four wrote on social media in response to the backlashNEED TO KNOW Kourtney Kardashian Barker has responded to backlash for having her 21-month-old son Rocky Thirteen on a boat without a life vest 'Good looking out. Honestly didn't think about some of the dangers,' she wrote in a social media post, revealing she has since purchased a life vest for her youngest child Kardashian Barker shares Rocky with husband Travis Barker, and she is also a mom to three kids with ex Scott DisickKourtney Kardashian Barker is learning from her mistakes. The Lemme founder, 46, shared an Instagram post on Friday, Aug. 8, that included a photo of 21-month-old son Rocky Thirteen on a boat without a life vest. A day later, and after she faced backlash for the safety hazard, Kardashian Barker shared a post on her Instagram Stories, speaking out about the controversy. 'Update: bought a life vest that fits!' the mom of four wrote over a screenshot of an infant life vest. 'Good looking out. Honestly didn't think about some of the dangers,' Kardashian Barker continued. 'Thank you for making me aware and hopefully this helps make other mommies aware of the dangers of certain types of boating without a life vest.' Other images included in her Aug. 8 post indicated that Kardashian Barker was in Idaho, where it is required that children 14 years of age and younger must wear a life vest while on the water. Fans expressed concern on social media about Kardashian Barker's move to not have her youngest child wear protective gear during the boat outing. 'Great photo except for the fact the child has no life jacket on,' one person wrote in the comments section of her post. 'You can make those kinds of decisions for yourself. But don't make a decision like that for your child. PLEASE," they added. A user on Reddit said, "Rocky should be wearing a life jacket. Such dangerous neglect," as another wrote, "Kids on boats should always be wearing appropriate life vests, and it looks like it's sitting in the seat right next to them." 'C'mon Kourt. You both should be wearing life jackets ... everyone on that boat should be,' one other person commented on Instagram. "Dressed Like A Miami Drug Lord": Chet Holmgren Turns Heads With Outrageous Outfit At Alex Caruso's Wedding
"Dressed Like A Miami Drug Lord": Chet Holmgren Turns Heads With Outrageous Outfit At Alex Caruso's Wedding originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Chet Holmgren and the various members of the Oklahoma City Thunder team attended Alex Caruso's wedding on August 10, 2025. Caruso tied the knot with Haleigh Broucher after announcing his engagement in August 2024. The NBA champion Chet Holmgren pulled up in a white suit with a red shirt and gold chains. This bizarre outfit at the wedding was turning heads online, as well as fans made fun of him. "Chet dressed like a Miami drug lord." "I thought you were not supposed to wear white to a wedding, or is that only a girl thing?" "Chet always roleplaying n**** looks like an 80s mob boss." "Why is he wearing white to someone else's wedding? That's so rude." "Why is Chet dressed like a '70s p*** star?" "Bro, Chet, you're not Tony Montana," said a fan hilariously as he pointed out how similar Holmgren looked to the iconic character of Al Pacino from Scarface, the movie. "Chet always looks like a Baltic Mob Boss from the 80s." "If I had seen this yesterday, I would've sworn Chet was trying to sell me jewelry at the mall." "Chet looks like a Las Vegas-themed Vampire." The No. 2 pick of the 2022 NBA Draft, Holmgren signed a five-year, $250 million extension with the Thunder earlier this summer, matching similar terms as Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, in a rookie-max extension. Holmgren is expected to earn as high as $54.6 million in the 2030-31 season. While NBA legends like Shaquille O'Neal believe Holmgren has not done enough to be considered as a part of the Thunder's "big three", the Thunder's front office seems to disagree. In the Thunder's championship-winning season, Holmgren played only 32 games in the regular season, where he averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while playing 27 minutes a night. During the 2025 Playoffs, Holmgren averaged 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks in 23 games played to help the Thunder win their first-ever NBA championship. While it is arguable that Holmgren has not really reached the superstar status yet, the contract extension was the Thunder's way of telling him that they have faith in him for the long term. While Holmgren's impact on the floor is not that visible on the box score, the best players who have faced the Thunder have credited him as being the difference-maker for the Thunder. Do you think Holmgren has the potential to be a superstar with the Thunder? In my opinion, while he does have the potential, he is nowhere close to his ceiling yet. Let us know what you think in the comments story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.
