Character.AI gets new AI powered image to video generator, community feed and more

Indian Express2 days ago

Character.AI, a platform that allows users to chat and engage in conversations with AI-generated role-playing characters, is getting a bunch of new features. Purchased by Google in August last year, the company said it is 'expanding into a multi-modal world and unlocking even more ways for Creators to build immersive narratives and craft richer, more dynamic experiences.'
In a blog post, Character.AI listed down some of these features, which include AvatarFX, a video generation model, and Scenes and Streams. While AvatarFX has already been available to subscribers for a monthly fee, the functionality is now open to all, allowing them to create five videos per day.
To give you a quick recap, AvatarFX is an AI-powered image-to-video generator that brings your characters to life. Using this, users can upload any photo and make it sing, speak and engage with just the click of a button. This is really handy if you are a digital creator who wants to make introductory videos for Characters or generate dynamic content to get more followers. It is currently limited to the web version of the service, but will soon be available on mobile devices.
For creators, Characters.AI also introduced 'Scenes', a new tool that enables 'immersive storytelling experiences', where characters created by users can be inserted into 'interactive, pre-populated storylines.' Later this year, Character.AI says it will introduce new tools that allow creators to build and publish their very own scenes.
The company also introduced a new feature called 'Streams'. The new tool 'puts users in the director's seat', helping them make 'dynamic moments' between any two Characters by simply choosing a topic of their choice and hitting play. Character.AI says both Streams and Scenes can be shared with others on its new social feed and will be available on the movie version of the app.
Character.AI also redesigned its user profile page, which now lets you showcase your creativity and AI-generated Characters. Some of the new features include a smarter way to organise things and more customisation options that help you connect to your audience.
If you want to animate Characters created on the platform, the new Imagine Animated Chats feature lets you do just that. You can also make two Characters interface with one another and share them either on the Character.AI feed or on other platforms. However, it is currently limited to c.ai+ subscribers on the mobile app.
Talking of the new community feed, Character.AI says the social aspect of its platform connects all of the above features, meaning users will be able to share Characters, Scenes and Streams as well as their own content on the mobile app.

Google partners with Chile to deploy a trans-Pacific submarine cable

Google signed an agreement with Chile on Wednesday to deploy an undersea fiber optic cable connecting South America with Asia and Oceania, a first-of-its-kind project that aims to cement the South American country's status as a major digital hub. The Humboldt Cable, envisioned for deployment in 2027, is a 14,800-kilometer (9,200-mile) submarine data cable that will connect Chile's coastal city of Valparaíso with Sydney, Australia through French Polynesia. The initiative is being launched almost a decade after it was first proposed in 2016, and six years after the initial studies to determine its feasibility. 'This is the first submarine cable in the South Pacific, so it's an important commitment", Chilean Transport Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz told journalists. Chile, home to one of Google's largest data centers in Latin America, is currently connected to the United States and the rest of the region via an undersea cable. This cable also provides Chile with a longer route to other continents. Officials from both Google and the Chilean government hailed the project as critical infrastructure with potential to attract millions of dollars in investment from major tech companies, mining and banking firms in Chile and Australia. 'The idea of building this cable is that it can also be used not only by Google but also by other users, such as technology companies operating in Chile,' said Cristian Ramos, director of telecommunications infrastructure for Latin America at Alphabet, Google's parent company. Although Google did not disclose its total investment, Patricio Rey, general manager of local partner Desarrollo País, a state-owned infrastructure company, estimated the cable project's value at $300 million to $550 million, with Chile contributing $25 million. The Humboldt Cable will establish Chile as a data gateway for the Asia-Pacific, while strengthening its relations with Asian nations, especially China, its largest trading partner. It also comes as demand for undersea cables surges due to increased reliance on cloud computing services. The next stages involve installing the submarine cable, selecting and contracting a telecommunications operator, and constructing landing stations in Chile. The initiative could heighten tensions as Chile finds itself caught in the middle of an intensifying rivalry between China and the Trump administration. Undersea cables have long been flash points in geopolitical disputes.

World's youngest self-made female billionaire is a 30-year-old college dropout, beat Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Rihanna

For years, pop icon Taylor Swift has been the world's youngest self-made female billionaire. She reached the billionaire mark in 2023 at the age of 33and has held the record since then. But now, she has been unseated, and not by someone from the entertainment world. The new record-holder is a 30-year-old college dropout known as much for her self-confessed workaholism as for her hard-partying lifestyle. (Also read: World's richest influencer is a billionaire; donates all earnings, still richer than Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Shah Rukh) AI founder Lucy Guo has become the world's youngest self-made female billionaire at the age of 30. Forbes' list of America's Richest Self-Made Women, released on Wednesday, puts Lucy with a net worth of $1.3 billion. This happened after ScaleAI, the firm she co-founded with Alexandr Wang at the age of 21, has been valued at $25 billion in a new deal. According to the New York Post, Lucy is the daughter of Chinese immigrants and was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she quickly picked up coding in middle school. She dropped out of Carnegie Mellon University as she clinched a $100,000 entrepreneurial scholarship bankrolled by billionaire investor Peter Thiel. She was fired from ScaleAI after disagreements with her co-founder, but has kept her 5% stake in the company, which has now made her a billionaire. Taylor Swift is one of the youngest female billionaires in the world. According to Forbes, the 35-year-old has a net worth of $1.6 billion as of June 2025. Barbadian musician Rihanna, 37, is also a billionaire with a net worth of $1 billion. Selena Gomez was reported to be a billionaire in September 2024. This would have made her the youngest self-made female billionaire at 32. But Forbes later revised her net worth to $700 million. Earlier, Forbes had called Kylie Jenner the youngest self-made billionaire when she reported breached the $1-billion mark in 2020 at the age of 2020. But like Selena, her billionaire status was revoked, too, given the financial irregularities with her businesses. Kylie has a reported net worth of $700 million now.
