Tirumala hills swamped with devotees over long weekend
Tirupati: Tirumala Hills have been teeming with devotees over the long weekend, with the temple town witnessing a massive surge of pilgrims from Friday in the wake of consecutive holidays. The influx began from the early hours of Friday and swelled further on Saturday and Sunday, resulting in extraordinary crowding at the shrine of Lord Venkateswara. Sarvadarshan pilgrims have been enduring waiting times of nearly 36 hours for darshan, as Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) struggled to manage the heavy turnout. The back-to-back holidays – Independence Day on Friday, followed by Krishnashtami on Saturday and the regular Sunday rush – triggered an unprecedented inflow of devotees. All 31 compartments of the Vaikuntam Queue Complex were packed to capacity, forcing the formation of external queues stretching up to three kilometres. On Saturday alone, 87,759 pilgrims had darshan, while Hundi collections touched Rs 4.16 crore. Accommodation shortages left several pilgrims resting in sheds, office premises, German sheds, beneath trees, and even on pavements. Meanwhile, the Kalyanakatta centres, where devotees offer tonsure, also saw a heavy rush, with over 42,000 pilgrims taking part on Saturday. Tirumala's temple precincts, mada streets, Akhilandam, laddu counters, Annaprasadam halls, Lepakshi and Rambhageecha junctions were all packed with devotees. To cope with the unprecedented rush, TTD arranged for drinking water, milk, tea and Annaprasadam in the queue lines, with Srivari Sevaks assisting in distribution. Officials were seen continuously monitoring queue management across the queue lines taking care of the pilgrims amenities. Demand for Srivani tickets also shot up sharply, with 3–4 times more devotees vying for the 800 tickets allotted per day. Similarly, Slotted Sarva Darshan (SSD) token counters at Bhudevi Complex, Vishnu Nivasam and Srinivasam in Tirupati witnessed long queues from early Sunday, with pilgrims waiting for hours to secure their tokens. However, it appears that from Sunday evening, the rush was gradually receding. Despite the surging numbers, TTD has appealed to devotees to cooperate with staff and volunteers, assuring that all possible arrangements are being made to ease the pilgrim experience.

BMRCL to start Yellow Line one hour early on August 18
Bengaluru: With Independence day holidays and the weekend drawing large numbers of people out of the city, Bengaluru is bracing for a heavy rush of returning commuters on Monday, August 18. Anticipating increased passenger load, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has decided to start operations on the Yellow Line one hour earlier than usual. On Monday, Yellow Line metro services will commence at 5:00 a.m., instead of the routine 6:30 a.m. start. The first trains will depart simultaneously from RV Road and Bommasandra Dalmia Electronics City stations, covering commuters traveling between central Bengaluru and the bustling IT corridor. Officials clarified that this advance schedule is a special arrangement only for Monday. From Tuesday, August 19, services will revert to the regular 6:30 a.m. start on the Yellow Line. Meanwhile, metro services on the Purple Line and Green Line will continue as usual, beginning at 4:15 a.m. on Monday, ensuring city-wide connectivity for early commuters. Stretching 19.15 km, the Yellow Line connects RV Road to Bommasandra, linking Bengaluru's central neighborhoods with the IT hub of Electronics City. With 16 stations along the route, the line also offers interchanges with the **Green, Pink, and Blue lines, boosting connectivity across the metro network. Notably, Jayadeva Hospital station, one of the stops on this line, has earned recognition as the tallest and largest metro station in Bengaluru, adding to the corridor's significance. BMRCL officials noted in a statement on social media that the early service aims to ease the return rush of office-goers, students, and travelers, ensuring smoother commuting after the extended holiday break.

Independence Day rush spurs rise in rail footfall; calls grow for special trains for Onam
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Major railway stations across the Thiruvananthapuram Division recorded close to a 20% spike in passenger footfall during the Independence Day weekend. The rush, which began on Thursday evening, was managed effectively with the operation of special trains and the addition of extra coaches, said senior railway officials. The surge in passenger numbers is expected to continue until Monday morning. Since Independence Day fell on Friday this year, Southern Railway introduced special services to manage the crowd, including the Mangaluru Junction-Thiruvananthapuram North Special on August 14 and 16, along with return services from Thiruvananthapuram North-Mangaluru Junction on August 15 and 17. Officials said these measures offered much relief to passengers at busy stations. Senior officials of Southern Railway said that the rush is only a precursor to the heavier traffic during Onam. Sources said the passenger footfall is projected to rise by over 40% between September 4 and 7. With this in mind, passengers have urged the Southern Railway to consider deploying additional Vande Bharat Express services for the festive season.
