Clemson baseball adds former Tennessee Vol in transfer portal
A few days after Clemson baseball coach Erik Bakich said that his team wasn't finished in the transfer portal, the Tigers added another arm to their 2026 pitching staff.
Former Tennessee Volunteers pitcher Michael Sharman has committed to Clemson, he announced in a social media post to Instagram late Saturday.
A 6-foot-1, 198-pound left-hander, Sharman spent one year with the Vols after transferring from the JUCO ranks at Georgia Highlands in 2024. A redshirt junior last season, he pitched in 17 games for Tony Vitello's club. In 22 2/3 innings, Sharman posted a 3-1 record with a 3.18 ERA.
Sharman was used mostly in relief but made three starts in midweek games in 2025. He struck out 25 batters and walked 10 while holding opposing hitters to a .229 average.
Sharman is the eighth player to commit to Clemson from the transfer portal since the Tigers' season ended with a 16-4 loss to Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. He's the third pitcher to join the Tigers via the portal.
Clemson's most recent additions in the portal were outfielder Nate Savoie from Loyola Marymount in the West Coast Conference on June 13, and Western Kentucky outfielder Ryan Wideman (June 11). Wideman was considered one of the best overall players available in the portal class.

Gleyber Torres drew a 10th-inning walk to send home Wenceel Pérez and give the Detroit Tigers a 1-0 win over Houston on Tuesday night, the Astros' third consecutive shutout loss. The game featured a marquee pitching matchup, with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal against Detroit native and All-Star Hunter Brown. The pair combined to allow eight hits in 13 scoreless innings. Skubal's 10 strikeouts in seven innings made him the first pitcher to reach 200 in 2025. The Tigers put runners on the corners with one out in the third, but Christian Walker snared Kerry Carpenter's low liner and stepped on first for an inning-ending double play. Zach McKinstry led off the fifth with his ninth triple, but Brown escaped the inning with a groundball, a strikeout and a fly out. The start of the game was delayed 35 minutes by rain. The Astros nearly took the lead in the fourth inning, but Torres' relay throw to the plate was in time to erase Yainer Diaz at the plate. Houston challenged the call, and initial replays seemed to show Diaz's hand got to the plate before Dingler made the tag, but the call was confirmed by New York. The crowd of 30,770 gave the Tigers a season attendance of 1,893,473 through 65 games. Last season, they drew 1,858,295. They have already sold enough tickets to reach 2 million for the first time since 2017. Tigers RHP Charlie Morton (8-10, 5.20 ERA) faces LHP Framber Valdez (11-6, 3.01) on Wednesday.

The Detroit Tigers' second baseman will become the 75th active player to reach 1,000 career games, per Chris McCosky of Detroit News. Perhaps more impressive, he will be one of only 11 primary second basemen in MLB history with 150 career home runs by his 1,000th game. And Torres, who made his Major League debut in 2018, is just 28 years old. Torres' journey to 1,000 games The Venezuela native began his climb to the majors in 2013, when he signed as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs. Five years later, he made his Major League debut during the 2018 season with the New York Yankees and recorded a .271 batting average with 24 home runs and 77 RBI over 123 games. That was a good enough rookie year for Torres to be named an All-Star—a feat he also achieved the following season in 2019, when he upped his average to .278 and set career highs in both homers (38) and RBI (90). After seven years with the Yankees, Torres elected free agency and signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers before this season. That proved to be the right choice, as he started his first All-Star game this summer and has helped lead the Tigers to the top of the AL Central with a 73-53 record. Torres has a slash line of .261/.357/.401 this season with 13 homers and 58 RBI through 111 games. The Tigers will certainly need that type of production as they begin a three-game series vs. the Houston Astros—who lead the AL West—at Comerica Park tonight. The two teams haven't faced each other since late April, when the Astros took two out of three games in Houston.

Auburn claims 4 additional 'national championships' on its football resume
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. The Tigers, for decades, boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. Now, though, athletic director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. It's laudable by some and laughable by others. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3 for a story announcing the decision Tuesday. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history. 'Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation.' The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma.
