iPhone Fold's crease-free folding screen to be made by Samsung Display

Once again, a new rumor claims Apple's first foldable iPhone will use a crease-free folding screen made by Samsung Display. In fact, Apple had no input into the panel's design, it's all Samsung on this one - and this is notable because of how rarely it happens, as Apple generally likes to customize every single part it uses in its devices.
Not this time, though, and the reason is allegedly to "ensure stable mass production" of the foldable iPhone, planned to arrive in the second half of next year. A custom display solution may not have achieved the same yields as what Samsung Display can offer with its own design.
Apple's decision to go all-in with Samsung Display's crease-free solution will benefit the latter's suppliers, including Fine M-Tec, a key provider of internal hinges, which has emerged as the leading beneficiary according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned source of Apple-related information from the supply chains. According to him, Fine M-Tec will have an 80% share (or more) of the supply of this part.
The internal hinge is a key part of a crease-free folding screen, as this metal plate helps distribute and control bending stress, preventing the display material from exceeding its elastic limit. And that's how the likelihood of creasing is minimized, Kuo explains. For all of this to work, the metal plate must be highly integrated with the display design, and that's exactly what Samsung Display and Fine M-Tec have achieved.
For Apple's folding iPhone, laser drilling will be used to create microstructures that better guide stress distribution and enhance crease resistance. Fine M-Tec should start shipping display metal plates for the foldable iPhone in the first quarter of next year, with unit prices apparently being in the $30-35 range.
Shipments are reportedly expected to reach 13-15 million units in 2026, but those aren't the projected sales numbers for the iPhone Fold - they will be lower, more such plates need to be produced than actual iPhone Folds shipped due to yield losses and repair stock requirements.

Several times per turn ChatGPT had to have its awareness of the board reset. The AI chatbot promised multiple times that its playing would improve if the game started over from the beginning. Finally, ChatGPT conceded the match. Interestingly, it was ChatGPT that suggested the contest. During a conversation about chess, ChatGPT said that it was a strong player and could easily beat Atari Video Chess, which thinks only 1-2 moves ahead. ChatGPT was curious about how fast it could win. Instead, we know it lost. At the start of this month, the Atari 2600 game console took on another modern AI powerhouse in a game of chess. Microsoft's Copilot thought that the Atari 2600 was no match for it. Despite this shortcoming, Copilot said that it could still analyze the board and make good moves. Well, apparently it couldn't as the Atari 2600 made it two straight victories against an AI opponent. Caruso then spoke with Gemini to set up a match. The Google-developed AI, like ChatGPT and Copilot, thought it had an easy victory in the bag. However, Gemini then admitted that it had hallucinated its chess-playing abilities. That left Gemini to make the only correct decision it could in light of its admission. "Canceling the match is likely the most time-efficient and sensible decision," said Gemini. While Gemini never did get a chance to take on the Atari 2600, Caruso was impressed with how the chatbot had the insight to know its own limitations. It seems incredible that a game console 48 years old using woefully underpowered technology, could beat two AI chatbots with cutting-edge tech and scare a third one into cancelling a match. But this is not really the upset that you might think it is. That would be a baffling choice, considering how much Apple has invested in promoting the premium material for its Pro phones since the release of the iPhone 15 Pro. At first sight, that would be a confusing choice for the iPhone 17 Air because titanium is a heavier material than aluminum. The idea of the super-slim device is to be as lightweight and thin as possible, so utilizing a heavier material doesn't make sense. Titanium is a stronger material than aluminum, though.
