Selangor Orang Asli festival to highlight culture, arts and tourism
Scheduled for Aug 9 at Kampung Orang Asli Kelinsing in Sepang, the event aligns with the 2025 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
State Executive Councillor for Human Resources and Poverty Eradication V. Papparaidu emphasised the festival's role in preserving Orang Asli heritage.
He noted that the Temuan, Mah Meri, and Semai ethnic groups will showcase their unique customs, including Sewang and Jo'oh dances, Mah Meri wood carvings, and ancestral rituals.
The festival also aims to boost eco-tourism by promoting Orang Asli villages as cultural destinations.
Papparaidu highlighted the state's commitment to empowering the community through education, arts, and entrepreneurship.
'This event raises awareness of Orang Asli rights while providing economic opportunities,' he said during a press conference at Wisma Negeri Selangor.
Selangor is home to over 20,000 Orang Asli individuals across 74 villages.
The Mah Meri community of Carey Island has gained international acclaim for their craftsmanship, reflecting the broader potential of indigenous enterprises. - Bernama

Sibu journalists get gadget vouchers, flight subsidies from association
SIBU: The Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) has rolled out two new welfare benefits for its members, including a RM250 gadget voucher and RM200 flight subsidy. SJA deputy chairman Mohamad Alhadi Shamsawi said the RM250 PC Image voucher will be distributed in 2026 to help journalists upgrade their work equipment. Alhadi also announced RM100 birthday 'angpao' for members born between July and December 2025, following a similar payout earlier this year. SJA introduced the Tokoh Wartawan SJA 2025 Award, honouring veteran journalists with a trophy and RM1,500 cash prize. This year's recipient is former Bernama correspondent Edward Subeng Stephen, who served in journalism for over 40 years. Malaysia attracts 1.8 million Chinese tourists in early 2025 with visa waiver
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 1.8 million tourists from China visited Malaysia between January and May 2025. This surge follows the visa waiver introduced for Chinese travellers in 2024. Deputy Tourism Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan noted arrivals rose from 1.6 million in 2023 to 3.4 million last year. The ministry is collaborating with travel agencies to attract more Chinese tourists, especially Muslim travellers.
