Delhi Haat traders blame lack of fire safety: 'Lost entire life's savings'

Hindustan Times01-05-2025
The vibrant corridors of Dilli Haat wore a charred and silent look on Thursday morning after a massive fire broke out late Tuesday night, gutting at least 30 shops.
Morning visuals from the iconic open-air market in South Delhi revealed the extent of the damage, with rows of damaged stalls and charred debris scattered across pathways.
The fire, which broke out around Wednesday night, spread rapidly through the tightly packed rows of kiosks, many of them made with wood and cardboard.
Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg, in a statement, said, "We received a call regarding a fire at the Dilli Haat Market at 8.55 pm, and 14 fire engines were rushed to the spot. A total of 30 shops were gutted. The fire has been extinguished, and no injuries were reported".
Smoke was seen billowing from several shops, and flames leapt towards the sky as the blaze swept the open-air art and craft mart.
At least 30 shops were gutted in the massive fire at the Dilli Haat, a popular market in south Delhi's INA area, on Wednesday night, the Delhi Fire Services said.
The area was immediately evacuated, and fire tenders managed to bring the blaze under control, it added.
Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, who reached the site soon after the fire was brought under control, informed that there were no casualties in the incident.
Mishra, the Minister of Art, Culture and Language, in a post on X said, "The fire at Dilli Haat has been brought under control. While several shops have been gutted, by the grace of God, there are no reports of any casualty. I am at Dilli Haat to meet those affected."
While one of the shop owners claimed that goods worth at least ₹10 crore have been destroyed, another, Shauket Ahmed, said that he alone suffered a loss of at least ₹1.5 crore.
"We don't know how the fire broke out, but we could not save anything," he said.
The owner of shop no. 4 said, "I have lost my entire life's savings. We had set up this stall by taking a loan. Everything we earned over the years is gone."
Talking to PTI, some shopkeepers claimed that there were no proper fire safety arrangements in place at the market.
Vijai Kumar, who sells Madhubani paintings, said the fire spread rapidly due to the lack of firefighting equipment like fire extinguishers.
"It took the fire brigade nearly one and a half hours to reach. There were no adequate arrangements in place to help us respond to such an emergency," Kumar said.
The traders said the fire broke out at around 8.30 pm, possibly due to a short circuit.

United Spirits Q1 profit slips 14 pc to Rs 417 cr; revenue at Rs 6,295 cr

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) Diageo-controlled liquor maker United Spirits Ltd on Wednesday reported a 14 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit to Rs 417 crore for the June quarter of FY26. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 485 crore a year ago, according to a regulatory filing from United Spirits Ltd (USL). Its revenue from operations was marginally up at Rs 6,295 crore during the quarter under review. It was Rs 6,238 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. USL's total expenses stood at Rs 5,776 crore, up 2.79 per cent in the June quarter. In the June quarter, 'EBITDA was Rs 644 crore, down 9.7 per cent, largely due to a one-off indirect tax item impact and relatively higher A&P in the standalone business", said USL in its earnings statement. In the June quarter, USL's income from the 'Beverage alcohol' segment rose 8.37 per cent to Rs 2,549 crore. Its sports business, Royal Challengers Sports Private Ltd (RCSPL), which owns the RCB team for IPL and WPL, registered a 15.73 per cent growth in revenue to Rs 478 crore in the June quarter. During the quarter, USL's consolidated net sales value (NSV) rose 9.4 per cent to Rs 3,021 crore. 'This was driven by the 8.4 per cent growth in the standalone business and 15.7 per cent reported growth of the sports business housed in the 100 per cent subsidiary RCSPL," it said. The Prestige & Above segment accounted for 88.3 per cent of net sales during the first quarter. The Popular segment accounted for 9.8 per cent of the net sales during the first quarter. The Popular segment net sales grew 13.6 per cent, it said. Its total income of USL, which owns brands like McDowell's, Royal Challenge, Signature, Johnnie Walker, and Black Dog in its fold, was Rs 6,367 crore, up 1.5 per cent. 'We delivered a resilient quarter with the Prestige & Above portfolio sustaining its growth momentum, while cycling a high prior year base. The quarter also marked the completion of the Nao Spirits acquisition. 'Looking ahead, we remain focused on our circle of control to lead the next wave of category growth through sharper portfolio, tailored consumer engagement and revenue growth management," its Managing Director and CEO Praveen Someshwar said. Shares of United Spirits Ltd settled at Rs 1,306.80 apiece on BSE on Wednesday, up 0.71 per cent from the previous close. Festive sparkle lifts exports: Gem and jewellery shipments jump 15.98% to $2.18 bn in July, Hong Kong rebound aids growth

Strong order bookings at the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) Premiere and a recovery in the Hong Kong market pushed India's gem and jewellery exports up 15.98% year-on-year to $2,178.24 million (Rs 18,756.28 crore) in July, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). Exports in July 2024 stood at $1,878.09 million (Rs 15,700 crore), PTI reported. 'The July exports are good and an encouraging sign for our industry. It mainly got a boost from successful substantial order bookings during the IIJS Premiere and a strong bounce back of the Hong Kong market. This performance is heartening, especially as it comes amid global challenges, such as the ongoing impact of the US tariffs,' GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali said. The recently concluded IIJS Premiere 2025 generated estimated orders worth Rs 70,000–90,000 crore, lifting industry sentiment ahead of the festive season, the council said. Bhansali added that the industry is gearing up for SAJEX 2025 in Saudi Arabia this September, expected to open new trade and investment avenues in the Gulf. Within the broader exports basket, cut and polished diamond shipments rose 17.76% to $1,071.73 million (Rs 9,230.66 crore) in July from $910.13 million (Rs 7,608.79 crore) a year earlier. Polished lab-grown diamond exports increased 27.61% to $122.43 million (Rs 1,054.65 crore) from $95.94 million (Rs 802.16 crore). Gold jewellery exports climbed 16.39% to $813.77 million (Rs 7,005.96 crore) against $699.17 million (Rs 5,844.28 crore) in July 2024, the data showed. Corning-Optiemus cover glass factory likely to begin operations from December

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) US glass technology major Corning's joint venture project with Optiemus Infracom — Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies — is likely to begin operations in December this year, a company official said on Wednesday. Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies (BIG Tech) will be India's first facility to produce high-quality, finished cover-glass parts for mobile consumer electronics, helping meet growing manufacturer demand in India. 'We are trying to get it started in December this year," the official said in response to a question on the status of the BIG Tech facility. The cover-glass is fixed on top of the mobile display by the manufacturers to provide it a protection layer before shipping devices into the market. Corning's gorilla glass cover material has been designed into more than eight billion devices by more than 45 major brands, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Oppo, Google Pixel, Huawei, Motorola, etc. Apple has also partnered with Corning to make all cover glass for iPhone and Apple Watch in Corning's manufacturing facility in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, with an investment of USD 2.5 billion. As per the announcement, 100 per cent of the cover glass on iPhone and Apple Watch units sold worldwide will be made in the US for the first time.
