German club pull out of transfer of Israel international over Gaza social media posts

Fortuna Dusseldorf have pulled out of a deal to sign Shon Weissman due to the player's social media comments on the Israel-Gaza war, which the club say are 'not compatible' with their values. The 2. Bundesliga club had agreed a deal to sign the Israel international forward from Spanish club Granada, but did not proceed with the move after social media posts from Weissman resurfaced. The 29-year-old had already travelled to Dusseldorf and underwent medical tests ahead of completing his move. However, on Tuesday, Dusseldorf posted on their social media: 'We looked into Shon Weissman intensively, but ultimately decided not to sign him.' INFO-TWEET ℹ️ Wir haben uns intensiv mit Shon Weissman beschäftigt, uns aber final entschieden, von einer Verpflichtung abzusehen.#f95 | 🔴⚪ — Fortuna Düsseldorf (@f95) August 5, 2025 Weissman, who has scored six goals in 39 appearances for Israel, had made several social media posts after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, which was followed by the subsequent military response by Israel. The player sent one social media reply suggesting there should be violent retaliations for the October 7 attacks, and liked or shared other social media posts calling for violence against the population of Gaza. Advertisement 'We did not sign Shon because the comments he made online are not compatible with Fortuna's values,' a Fortuna spokesperson told The Athletic. 'Fortuna is committed to fighting violence and hatred. So the detailed findings have led us to decide now not to sign the player. We wish Shon all the best for the future.' A spokesperson for Weismann said he 'regrets the previous interactions on social media' and claimed 'his emotions were high in the immediate aftermath' of the October 7 attacks. Fortuna's position is that the decision is unrelated to nationality or religion, and relates to their stance as an open club which actively opposes racism, exclusion, and hatred. Israel declared war on Hamas after the group's October 7 attack in 2023, which killed about 1,195 people and saw around 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli officials via the New York Times. More than 60,000 people in Gaza have been killed, according to Gaza health officials via the NYT, since October 2023. UNICEF said in June that 50,000 children had been killed or injured in Gaza since the war began. Additional reporting by Sebastian Stafford-Bloor. (Juan Manuel) Spot the pattern. Vancouver Whitecaps confirm signing of Thomas Muller

The Vancouver Whitecaps have confirmed the signing of former Bayern Munich and Germany player Thomas Muller. The Athletic reported on July 29 that the Whitecaps had agreed to terms on a trade with FC Cincinnati to secure Muller's MLS 'discovery rights' in exchange for up to $400,000 in general allocation money (GAM), with the 35-year-old signing a deal that will not require a designated player (DP) spot in 2025, but would jump to a DP deal in 2026. Discovery rights are a mechanism whereby MLS teams claim the right to negotiate with a player. FC Cincinnati previously negotiated with Muller after his representatives reached out to the club last winter. A legend arrives. The Raumdeuter is here. Willkommen, Thomas Müller! 🌊 #VWFC | 📰: — Vancouver Whitecaps FC (@WhitecapsFC) August 6, 2025 The Whitecaps will be just Muller's second club of his professional career. He spent 17 years at Bayern, winning 13 Bundesliga titles and the Champions League on two occasions. The former Germany international made 756 appearances for the club, scoring 250 goals. Muller confirmed in April he would be departing Bayern at the end of the 2024-25 campaign following the conclusion of his contract. Advertisement Despite largely being restricted to a substitute role during the 2024-25 campaign, he made 49 appearances in all competitions, providing eight goals and eight assists. Muller retired from international football in 2024, having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and earning 131 caps for his country, scoring 45 goals. Analysis by Paul Tenorio Muller certainly becomes one of the biggest names to come to MLS in the latter stages of his career, joining some of the luminaries of the sport. The early days of MLS saw the likes of Hristo Stoichkov and Lothar Matthaus sign in the league, while David Beckham's arrival in 2007 marked a new era. Players like Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Kaka, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, of course, Lionel Messi have since made moves to the U.S. Muller, 35, will be joining a team with championship aspirations that is currently challenging for first place in the Western Conference. Of the above names, only Beckham won anMLS Cup title. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Bayern announce long-term partnership with global airline

Bayern Munich have secured a major new commercial partner, announcing a long-term sponsorship deal with Dubai-based airline Emirates on Wednesday. The agreement, which runs for seven years until the end of the 2031/32 season, marks a significant return to the Bundesliga for the global airline. The partnership will primarily feature prominent Emirates branding on perimeter advertising boards at Bayern's Allianz Arena during all Bundesliga home matches. The collaboration will also include joint digital and social media campaigns aimed at a global audience. Bayern's deputy chairman, Michael Diederich, highlighted the deal's importance for the club's financial stability and international growth. 'FC Bayern also needs financial planning security to achieve its sporting goals, so Emirates is an ideal fit for our club's family of partners,' Diederich said in a statement. 'It will also help us that Emirates connects football fans around the world and can support FC Bayern in its internationalisation plans.' For Emirates, the deal represents a strategic re-entry into German club football, having previously sponsored Hamburger SV from 2006 to 2012. 'We are immensely proud to partner with FC Bayern – Germany's most iconic football club and a true global sporting giant,' said Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline. 'This landmark partnership represents far more than a commercial agreement; it embodies our deep commitment to Germany, which stands as a cornerstone of our European network,' he added. The partnership adds another of Europe's elite clubs to Emirates' extensive football sponsorship portfolio, which includes long-standing associations with Real Madrid, Arsenal, AC Milan, and Benfica.
