LA Galaxy vs Austin FC: MLS cellar dwellers clash in crucial match

The Sun16-07-2025
THE Los Angeles Galaxy and Austin FC face off in a pivotal MLS encounter as both teams look to climb out of the Western Conference basement.
The Galaxy, despite recent improvements, remain at the bottom of the table, while Austin FC struggles to find goals.
Austin FC has scored a league-low 15 goals in 21 matches this season, making them one of the least threatening attacking sides in MLS.
Their latest outing saw them held to a goalless draw by New England Revolution, with head coach Nico Estevez frustrated by missed chances. 'It's a game that if you play 10 times, nine you win,' Estevez said. 'We are unlucky.'
Meanwhile, the Galaxy have shown signs of life after a historically poor start. Their 2-1 victory over D.C. United marked their second straight win, a first this season.
Marco Reus and Diego Fagundez were on target, with goalkeeper Novak Micovic making crucial saves. Head coach Greg Vanney praised his team's growing confidence. 'The guys are confident as we're starting to see games out,' he said.
Despite their recent upturn, the Galaxy still share the league's worst record with CF Montreal, highlighting the scale of their early-season struggles.
Reus has been instrumental in their revival, leading the team with five goals and seven assists.
The two sides met earlier this season, with Austin securing a narrow 1-0 win at home.
The Galaxy hold a slight edge in the all-time series (5-3-1), but Wednesday's clash could prove decisive in shaping their playoff hopes. - Reuters

Lionel Messi to miss Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match due to injury

INTER MIAMI star Lionel Messi will miss the team's Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM on Wednesday following a right leg injury he suffered over the weekend. Messi's muscle injury has been described as 'minor' and 'slight' by team officials, and coach Javier Mascherano has reason to hope that Messi won't need much time to recover. 'Yes, I spoke to (Messi),' Mascherano said at a press conference Tuesday. 'Well, the club issued a statement that was very clear. It's a slight injury, within the bad news, it's good news. 'We don't like to estimate a return, especially in Leo's (case). He usually recovers very well from injuries and above all, normally does with speed. So we will see, but clearly for (Wednesday) he is unavailable. But then we will see how he feels, how he progresses.' Messi came out of Miami's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in the 11th minute, shortly after getting hurt in a collision with two opponents. Miami has one regulation win and one penalty shootout win through its first two Leagues Cup matches, good for five points and third place among MLS teams. The Pumas match will be the club's last in the group stage, after which the top four MLS teams will advance to the knockouts to face Liga MX's top four. Inter Miami resumes MLS regular-season action on Sunday at rival Orlando City. German Mueller signs season-long deal with Vancouver Whitecaps

FORMER Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller has signed a season-long deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club said on Wednesday Mueller, who turns 36 next month, decided to leave Bayern at the end of last season after 25 years with the German champions, helping them win 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies. Mueller has signed for the rest of the 2025 season, with the club holding an option to keep him in 2026 as a Designated Player -- a status that allows MLS teams to pay top salaries outside the league's salary cap. 'I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,' Mueller said in a statement. 'I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I'm coming to win.' 'This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership-- a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver,' Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said. Mueller made 131 appearances for Germany, scoring 45 goals, and was instrumental in their 2014 World Cup triumph. He scored 250 goals and registered 276 assists from 756 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. The playmaker helped Bayern reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals in the United States last month, where they lost to eventual runners-up Paris St Germain. Mueller is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on August 13. Vancouver, who are second in the Western Conference, visit San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday - REUTERS
