Missing Australian fisherman dragged overboard by shark, police say
The search for Paul Barning, a figure in the New South Wales Game Fishing Association, continued Monday after authorities were alerted around 1 p.m. Sunday that the 58-year-old had fallen from his boat, Dark Horse, about 34 miles off the coast of Newcastle near Port Stephens, authorities said.
Marine Area Command Commander Superintendent Joe McNulty told local news outlets on Monday that investigators believe the shark was "quite large" compared to Barning's 6.8-meter long vessel.
"During that process of bringing the shark alongside, he's become tangled in the fishing line, and the shark has taken off, and that fishing line was pulled taut and maybe contributed to him going over the side of the vessel. There's no evidence to say that shark has attacked the person in the water," McNulty said at a news conference. He added that Barning wasn't wearing a life jacket.
Barning, the secretary and past president of the Port Hacking game fishing club, was a "highly experienced game fisherman." He was participating in the NSWGFA Interclub State Championships at the time of the incident, the game fishing organization said in a statement posted to social media.
"This devastating accident highlights the risks involved in doing what we all love, game fishing," NSWGFA president Steve Lamond said in the statement. "Please look out for each other and stay safe."
Game fishing is a sport in which competitors catch, tag and release game fish including marlins, tunas and sharks. Points depend on the species of the game fish and their size.
Among the shark species eligible for points are Blue, Smooth Hammerhead, Mako, Porbeagle, Thresher, Tiger, Great White and Whaler sharks, according to the NSWGFA rulebook. The shark that Barning caught was believed to be a Mako, police said, which can reach up to 13 feet long, according to the NOAA Fisheries.
Competitors are also awarded prizes for catching the heaviest shark and catching the most sharks.

SOUTH BEND — The Great Notre Dame football quarterback derby rages on. Despite rampant speculation on message boards and beyond, neither Kenny Minchey nor CJ Carr was named the starting quarterback for the Aug. 31 season opener at Miami. 'We're still in a competition,' fourth-year Irish coach Marcus Freeman said after Sunday's jersey scrimmage. 'We have to make a decision here soon. I don't know when we'll make it. I don' t want to put a timeline on it. They've both been playing really well.' First-team practice repetitions were split evenly once again for the top two quarterbacks in Sunday's closed scrimmage, which went about 100 plays and allowed live contact for only portions of the outing at Notre Dame Stadium. Decision-making remains a key focus in the battle between two players with a three combined career passing attempts at the college level. Long considered the heir apparent since headlining Notre Dame's 2024 recruiting class, Carr played a handful of meaningless snaps at the end of last year's Week 3 blowout at Purdue. Carr's strong showing in the Blue-Gold Game in April, combined with the subsequent transfer to Syracuse of fourth-year junior Steve Angeli, led many pundits to believe Carr had the 2025 job locked up. Carr's three-interception showing on July 31 in the opening practice of training camp reopened what had been a fairly one-sided public debate over who should succeed Riley Leonard, now in his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts. A late addition to the 2023 recruiting class after de-committing from Pittsburgh, Minchey won over former Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to earn the bid. This is Minchey's third season of working with quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli; offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock took the reins in early 2024. 'Kenny can be reserved but the more you get to know Kenny, he's a competitive individual,' Freeman said. 'He has a different style of competitiveness. He's confident in his abilities. But I also like that he's even keeled a lot of times too. '(Just) because you see an even-keeled person, it doesn't mean they're not a competitive individual. Those are things that I think attracted us to him other than his physical skillset and the things that he does on film. That personality is unique to Kenny and it's helping him.' Ross Hodge finalizes WVU hoops roster with Evans Barning's commitment
MORGANTOWN — The WVU men's basketball team completed its roster late Friday with the addition of forward Evans Barning, a high school prospect out of Archbishop Carroll in Washington D.C. Evans Barning Barning, 6-foot-8, announced his commitment to the Mountaineers on social media. 'I'm excited. Go WVU,' he said. And there is the added bonus that Barning will be reclassifying from the 2026 cycle in order to enroll this fall and give the program another versatile roster piece. Head coach Ross Hodge had previously said that West Virginia wanted to fill the remaining roster slot with the best player available and Barning fits that mold. Barning is a prospect who is oozing with potential given his combination of size, length and athleticism. This past summer Barning performed well at Peach Jam with Team Durant scoring 29 points in one game and averaging 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds during the event. A skilled forward, Barning can finish above the rim and understands how to get to his spots to score. He also is a plus rebounder on both ends of the floor.
