Nicolas Cage is NFL coach John Madden in 1st look at upcoming film

NBC News15-05-2025

Playing one of the most beloved figures in NFL history may seem like a stretch for Nicolas Cage, but it's more like a hike.
Amazon MGM Studios released a first look at the film 'Madden' on May 13, with the Academy Award-winning Cage portraying former Oakland Raiders head coach John Madden, who would go on to become a popular NFL analyst.
The photo also features fellow Oscar winner Christian Bale as late Raiders owner Al Davis.
In the picture, Cage wears a light Raiders jacket while sporting a thick mop of hair. He holds a football in his left hand and flashes a Super Bowl ring, while Bale, as Davis, has the slicked-back hair and signature glasses Davis wore. He also sticks out his hand to show off a Super Bowl ring.
'Your first-look at Nicolas Cage as John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis on set of the upcoming film, Madden. Production is currently underway,' the caption on Amazon MGM Studios' Instagram post reads.
'The film follows Madden's remarkable journey—from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with Al Davis and the Raiders, to creating Madden NFL, and becoming one of the most iconic voices in football history.'
Like the Raiders defense under Madden, the film features some heavy hitters. John Mulaney stars as EA Sports founder Trip Hawkins, while Kathryn Hahn plays Madden's wife and Sienna Miller portrays Davis' wife. David O. Russell, who is a five-time Oscar nominee, directs it.
Madden died at the age of 85 in 2021 following a decorated career on the sidelines and in the broadcasting booth. He didn't have any losing seasons in a decade as Raiders coach and led them to a victory in the 1977 Super Bowl.
After retiring from coaching, he teamed up on CBS with former NFL star Pat Summerall for a long run calling NFL games, becoming one of the most popular broadcasting tandems in all of sports. Madden also worked for Fox, ABC and NBC before stepping away from the booth for good in 2009.
Davis died in 2011 at the age of 82. He was the renegade owner of the Raiders, best known for his signature phrase 'Just win, baby!' He won three Super Bowls as owner of the team.
Both Davis and Madden are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
'Madden' marks a reunion for Cage and Bale, who starred together in the 2001 movie 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin,' which, coincidentally, was directed by John Madden — a different person than the former coach, best known for helming 'Shakespeare in Love.'

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell reveals why he rejected Aaron Rodgers as he lifts lid on talks with veteran QB

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has revealed he turned down the chance to sign Aaron Rodgers as he's focused on doing what's best for the 'future' of the franchise. Rodgers, who finally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, was linked with a move to the Vikings after being released by the New York Jets back in March. Reports suggested Minnesota was the 41-year-old's preferred landing spot, yet O'Connell has instead opted to go with JJ McCarthy, 22, as his starting quarterback for next season. And the Vikings coach says he explained his thinking to Rodgers, whom he considers a good friend after knowing each other for close to two decades. 'When there was an opportunity, when him and I connected this offseason just to kind of talk about what that would look like, we had a lot of great dialogue about it, but it always was centered around what was best not only for the present in the Minnesota Vikings organization, but the future,' O'Connell said about the four-time MVP on Minneapolis radio station KFAN-FM 100.3. 'I was very honest about my feelings toward's JJ, my obligation that I felt like we were going to give him the best possible situation to begin and thrive on this NFL journey and let's see where it goes. We stayed in touch and had some communication.' He then added: 'Out of respect for our friendship and everything, that's about as much as really kind of happened. I still talk to him and the next time I talk to him it's going to be the same old, same old. 'He's different than people probably think, but I think that's all part of it in this day and age.' Minnesota went 14-3 with Sam Darnold at quarterback last season, before the 27-year-old Pro Bowl selection signed a three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks. McCarthy is now set to be promoted and fill the void left by Darnold over a year since he was drafted by the Vikings with the 10th overall pick. 'He's having a great spring,' O'Connell said about his new quarterback. 'We're pretty darn close to having a good feel for where he's at. 'He's had a great offseason. He's healthy, strong, throwing the ball great, fundamentals — everything you hope for in the spring.'

German Derby winner Palladium in action at Goodwood

The four-year-old was purchased for €1,400,000 by Lady Bamford following his Classic-winning exploits on the continent and joined Nicky Henderson, where he made one winning appearance over timber at Huntingdon before an injury ruled him out of a Cheltenham Festival bid. However, the Seven Barrows handler always had designs on returning to the level with Palladium and having swapped Lambourn for Newmarket to join John and Thady Gosden, the Clarehaven team will get their first look at the talented son of Gleneagles on the racecourse in the Listed BetGoodwin Tapster Stakes. Thady Gosden said: 'He won the German Derby and then he had a stint over the sticks, but it's great to have him back on the Flat as he was a Classic-winning three-year-old in Germany. 'Goodwood over a mile and half is a great place to start him off for the season. We'll see how he runs on Sunday and then we'll be able to make a plan for the season from there.' Palladium will be ridden by James Doyle, who added: 'I think they're due a bit of rain down at Goodwood so if that is on the easy side you would think would suit and it's a nice spare ride to pick up. 'It's always nice to ride for John and Thady and of course Lady Bamford and it's very kind of them to leg me up.' Palladium will face a total of five rivals including former Henderson stablemate Galashiels and new Gosden stablemate Military Academy. Karl Burke's Bolster, William Haggas' soft ground-loving Hamish and David Simcock's Raja Raja are also among the opposition. There is also Listed action on the card in the Weatherbys / British EBF Agnes Keyser Fillies' Stakes where a field of 12 head to post.
