Newly retired Florida sheriff's deputy crushed to death by RV he recently purchased
Deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office said they responded to the scene Wednesday evening to find the victim trapped underneath the RV at his home in the community of Oakland Park, just north of Fort Lauderdale, reports 7News.
The BSO identified the man as one of its own: 64-year-old Craig Bachan, a recently retired sergeant from the department, according to the station.
Bachan's son and sister also confirmed the victim's identity to ABC Local 10 News. His family said he left the department just 10 months ago.
The BSO has not yet publicly released further details surrounding the circumstances of the victim's death. No foul play is suspected, although an investigation is underway.
Bachan had reportedly been preparing the RV he had purchased after retirement for a summer trip when it collapsed on him, neighbors said.
One neighbor said they discovered him trapped under the vehicle from across the street and immediately called 911.
'He just bought the RV,' the neighbor told the news station. 'He was going to go out to Montana, Idaho, that area of the country this summer on a vacation.'
Local news cameras captured a yellow tarp at the scene with the surrounding area taped off.
Bachan's sister remembered her sibling as 'an incredible son, a loving father, and a devoted brother. She also shared a photograph of Bachan taken at his retirement party with local media while calling him 'an amazing deputy.'
Neighbors mourned for the late deputy, who they considered the 'heartbeat of the community.'
According to Bachan's Facebook profile, he first joined the BSO in 1995. His LinkedIn profile said that he was promoted to detective and assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit in 1999.
He went on to spend 11 years assigned to the Special Victims Unit investigating sexual crimes and missing persons, his profile says. Bachan was eventually promoted to Sergeant in December 2012.

Travis Decker Manhunt: Police Share New Evidence in Daughters' Murders

Over two months after the bodies of his and ex-wife Whitney Decker's daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were discovered at a campground in Leavenworth, Wash., police have linked the patriarch's DNA to the plastic bags used to kill the girls, whose causes of death were determined to be suffocation, per the autopsies completed by the Medical Examiner. 'Two of the victims each had two separate bags over their heads and the third victim had three separate bags over their head,' the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an Aug. 19 press release shared to Facebook. 'In addition, several cable ties were located on the ground in the immediate area of the bodies. These plastic bags and cable ties were collected that night by the Washington State Patrol Crime Response Team.' After sending this evidence for DNA analysis, authorities said that they believe Travis—who is wanted on first-degree charges of murder and kidnapping—is the 'only suspect involved in committing these homicides.' 'DNA profiles matching Paityn, Evelyn and Olivia Decker were also located on the plastic bags. No other DNA profiles were obtained from the plastic bags.' Regarding the cable ties found at the scene, the police department added, 'One DNA profile was obtained from the cable ties collected at the scene. That DNA sample matched the profile for Travis Decker. No other DNA profiles were obtained from the cable ties.' The sheriff's office, who has previously described Travis, 32, as "well versed in wilderness survival and capable of spending days or even weeks in the wilderness on his own and with very little equipment,' also confirmed that their search efforts for the army veteran continue. 'Decker's whereabouts remain unknown,' the statement concluded. 'At this time, we do not have any evidence to suggest Travis Decker is either alive or deceased.' Married Ohio teachers killed in fiery out-of-state crash while dropping eldest son off at college: ‘Just devastating'
Two beloved Ohio teachers – and parents of four children – were tragically killed in a fiery crash while dropping their eldest son off at college in North Carolina, according to authorities and reports. Maria Nunney, 50, and Donald Nunney, 55, were traveling east on Interstate 40 near Chapel Hill Friday afternoon when their Honda Odyssey veered off the road and struck several small trees before sliding down an embankment and slamming into a large tree, the North Carolina Highway Patrol told WNCN. Maria, riding in the passenger seat, died at the scene, while her husband, who was driving the minivan, was pronounced dead shortly after being airlifted to a nearby hospital.
