What really happened when Luka Modric was asked about Rangers by Davide Ancelotti from man inside the story

Daily Record6 days ago

It's the story of the day and Guillem Balague knows for a fact what really happened when Modric was asked about Rangers
The sight of Luka Modric at Ibrox next season is highly unlikely.
But the man who teased Rangers fans with the very possibility, Guillem Balague, says it tells them just how well connected their prospective new gaffer is.

Davide Ancelotti is now clear favourite again to land the gig as Philippe Clement's successor in Govan.

The Croatian midfield magician is leaving the Bernabeu for pastures new but it's doubtful that he'll end up in Glasgow.
Even so, Balague believes it's an example of Ancelotti's pulling power within the game.

That's why Rangers have the Italian at the top of their wanted list this summer ahead of their US takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.
Balague - who is currently writing a book on Aston Villa and their boss Unai Emery, 'Rise of the Villains', says Ancelotti is ready to become one of Europe's top coaches.
And the 35-year-old has already impressed Ibrox chiefs with a presentation and vision for the future.
But he believes Ibrox chiefs have to move fast if they want to get their man.
Record Sport caught up with Balague and quizzed him on the current situation with Rangers and Ancelotti.

You've teased the Rangers support by suggesting Modric could end up at Ibrox. How genuine was that?
Balague: Everyone will go further with it. But I know Davide asked Luka and he didn't say yes or no.
Listen, it's Luka Modric, so it's unlikely. But this is more a point about the capacity Davide Ancelotti has to link up with big names.
Also, there are players he knows who have asked him to take them to Rangers. Now, if they are Real Madrid players - and I'm assuming they are - it would be impossible because some of the wages would be astronomical.

I'm thinking about someone like Lucas Vazquez, for example.
You would think the wages for someone like him would make it impossible for Rangers. But it's funny that - knowing what's happening - they're asking Davide.
Where do you expect Modric to go?
Balague: The MLS potentially. But he feels he can still do it at Champions League level. Look, he's going to be 40 soon so I don't think he'll have lots of offers.

But he doesn't want to go into retirement so he feels it might be too early for the MLS.
Does this prove how tight a relationship Modric and Ancelotti Jnr have?
Balague: Oh yeah. The Real Madrid players love Davide. They all think that without him, Carlo wouldn't have won as much.
David has tried to modernise - and put a little bit of order and foundation - into a club that doesn't normally go for that.

It hasn't been easy for him at Real Madrid but he's got it all in his head, in terms of exactly what he wants.
His dad has put a culture of work and development into him.
I'm doing a book on Emery and Aston Villa and it's like that. Davide wants to work.

Could you understand scepticism about Ancelotti initially with people saying he only got jobs because of his dad?
Balague: No, not at all. World class players wouldn't accept that. Rangers wouldn't go for someone like that, either. But when someone like Davide comes in with the presentation that he's supposed to have put on, when he talks about so much detail - it's very impressive. He's going to be a top coach, there's no doubt about that. So his first choice of job is going to be very important.
But how big a job would Rangers be for his first gig, given the intensity of the Old Firm?
Balague: The fact that he's considering it means it doesn't faze him.
Davide has seen, heard and experienced as big a noise as Ibrox at Bayern, Napoli, AC Milan, Real Madrid. He wasn't the guy taking the decisions on the touchline but he's felt it.

He wanted to leave last summer but it didn't feel right having won everything. But now is his time.
How quickly do Rangers need to act if they don't want to risk losing out on him?
Balague: Yes, because imagine if you're Davide and you have three clubs wanting you.
If Rangers take another week or 10 days, he's going to go in another direction.
Timing and momentum in these things are important. It feels like they're on the same wavelength right now so just say yes.
If it's one more meeting, let's hope they go for it. It feels close.

Arsenal face Viktor Gyokeres transfer nightmare as striker speaks out on future

Arsenal are keen to add a new striker to their squad ahead of next season with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko among the candidates for a move to the Emirates Stadium Arsenal look set to have a busy start to the summer transfer window with Mikel Arteta keen to add a number of new faces to his squad. The Gunners look set to make Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi their first signing of the summer. But away from him, Arsenal are keen to sign a new striker and plenty of options have emerged. Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is a leading name on their shortlist, as is Benjamin Sesko. ‌ Either way, Arsenal are set to spend heavily over the coming months. While there are a few new signings on their way to the Emirates, there could also be a few players bidding farewell to the Emirates. ‌ Myles Lewis-Skelly and William Saliba have both been linked with sensational moves to Spanish giants Real Madrid. But will those deals come to fruition? Mirror Football takes a look at the latest transfer news and rumours from North London: Atletico Madrid express Gyokeres interest Arsenal could face serious competition in their attempts to sign Viktor Gyokeres. Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have now joined the race for his services. It is claimed in Portugal that Diego Simeone's men will make an attempt to sign Gyokeres over the coming weeks. They are not the only side interested however. Serie A champions Napoli are also thought to be contemplating a move for the former Coventry man. On a positive note for Arsenal, Gyokeres' preference is apparently a switch to the Premier League. Who should Arsenal sign this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below ‌ Gyokeres speaks out Sticking with the Swedish forward, he has refused to say too much about a potential move to Arsenal. Speaking with team-mate Leo Ostigard, he said:"We will see. Nobody knows anything yet. I wish I had a more fun answer, but that's all I can say for now." Later in the conversation, as he was saying goodbye to his former team-mate, Ostigard then added with a hint of jest: "Viktor! Great talking to you. See you soon, and text me when everything is signed and sorted down in Arsenal." Gyokeres jokingly replied: "Yeah, yeah sure." The defender has just one year left on his current contract at the club, something that the Spanish giants were hoping to take advantage of. But according to reports, Arsenal are keen to agree a new long-term deal with Lewis-Skelly. In doing that, they hope to avoid a similar saga that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold move to the Bernabeu.

Man Utd 'agree' Bryan Mbeumo deal as summer transfer collapses

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford after already completing a deal for Matheus Cunha this summer as Ruben Amorim looks to strengthen his squad It's been a busy start to the transfer window for Manchester United. And perhaps it should be no surprise after a dismal 2024/25 season. Ruben Amorim has already added Matheus Cunha to their squad after activating his £62.5million release clause and now United look set to land another Premier League star. Bryan Mbeumo, fresh from bagging 20 goals for Brentford, is keen to make the move as the Red Devils move on after missing out on Liam Delap. ‌ It's not all been plain sailing as Bruno Fernandes ' futures sees plenty of speculation. The Portuguese star has turned down a move to the Saudi Pro League however. ‌ The club will hope to facilitate exits for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony however. And Jadon Sancho will likely be on the list of exits in the coming months too. Mirror Football Mbeumo 'verbal agreement' News broke on Monday evening that Bryan Mbeumo preferred a move to Manchester United over the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal, and not it appears the forward has an agreement with the Red Devils ahead of a move. Sky in Germany report that Mbeumo has made a verbal commitment to the club and United are 'optimistic' of getting a deal over the line with Brentford. Negotiations between clubs are said to get underway to finalise a deal. United monitor Donnarumma Manchester United are among a handful of clubs monitoring Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Paris Saint-Germain star continues to see contract talks drag on with the Champions League winners. ‌ Fresh from playing in PSG's triumphant Champions League campaign, which saw a 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the final, Donnarumma's future appears to be up in the air. The 26-year-old's contract is set to expire next summer. Talks over an extension have already taken place and the club have tabled a proposal. Foot Mercato, via GFFN, however, reveal that Donnarumma has plenty of admirers among Europe's elite and they are lurkin in case the shot-stopper opts against signing a new deal. United are among those clubs and a move for Donnarumma would appeal given there are still doubts over Andre Onana following another mixed season for the Cameroon star. ‌ Sancho deal collapse Chelsea are set to pay Manchester United £5million after failing to reach an agreement to make Jadon Sancho's loan move permanent. Sancho spent the season on loan at Stamford Bride and the Blues were obligated to make the deal permanent after finishing higher than 14th in the Premier League. But the west London side did have a caveat in the deal which would allow them to renege on that commitment providing they cough up a £5m feel. That will now transpire. Chelsea are said to have wanted to retain Sancho's services but could not come to an agreement with the winger. The Blues did not want to match the salary he was earning at United. Rashford emerges as shock target for Italian giants amid Man Utd quandary

Marcus Rashford appears to have little future at Manchester United and the forward could potentially be in line for a blockbuster move to Italy ahead of next season Italian giants Inter Milan could make a move for Marcus Rashford after their Champions League humiliation. The Manchester United forward is on the lookout for his next club, with his future at Old Trafford less than certain. Rashford was unceremoniously cut from the squad by Ruben Amorim and joined Aston Villa on loan in January. The Midlands side have a £40m option to buy him this summer, albeit they have yet to activate that. ‌ A number of potential other suitors have emerged for Rashford's services and it appears that there is now interest from Italy. According to The Sun, Inter Milan have added the United forward to their summer shortlist as they aim to recover from their dismal Champions League final appearance. ‌ The Serie A giants were thumped 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in Munich. Club chiefs apparently believe that Rashford could be a perfect addition as they aim to rebuild the squad in the wake of that defeat. It is also said his signing would go a long way to getting fans back onside. Inter are apparently exploring a long-term loan move, albeit United would prefer a permanent deal. A source as quoted by The Sun said: 'Marcus is open-minded to a move abroad, and a fresh start. Lots of players have made the move from the Premier League to Serie A in recent years and performed very well. That's why the idea of such a switch excites both the player and Inter.' Away from Inter, Barcelona have also been credited with an interest in Rashford. Sporting director Deco was recently asked about a potential move but claimed work needed to be done behind the scenes before the Catalan side could consider adding new signings to their squad. 'We have been focusing on renewing contracts, after that, we'll discuss players to come," Deco said to BBC Sport. "Of course, these two players [Rashford and Luis Diaz], like you mentioned, they are good but have contracts in their clubs, so we won't speak because it's not fair. ‌ 'But when you decide to go to the market, for sure, we find some names. In my opinion, we don't need to bring many players. When I speak with the agents of the players, everyone wants to come or stay. 'So this is important. The image of the club is still good. We are proud because Barcelona is still such a big club, and the way we are playing football makes players want to come."
