Donley added to NI squad but Toal ruled out

BBC News18-03-2025
Jamie Donley's expected addition to the Northern Ireland squad for the friendlies against Switzerland and Sweden has been confirmed but defender Eoin Toal will miss the games because of injury and has been replaced by Kofi Balmer. Twenty-year-old Tottenham forward Donley, who is impressing during a loan stint at League One Leyton Orient, previously played for Northern Ireland at youth level before switching allegiance to England. However, the Antrim-born player has now been handed a first Northern Ireland senior call-up for Friday's home game against the Swiss and Tuesday's match in Sweden.Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill said he was "pleased to welcome Jamie into the squad"."He is a young player that we have been tracking for some time," said O'Neill."We are waiting on the relevant paperwork from Fifa to be processed before we can determine whether he plays an active role in any of the games, but having him in and around the place to familiarise himself with the place and stuff I felt was important."O'Neill added that he was "disappointed for" Bolton's Toal but said he was confident that Motherwell's Balmer "can come in and make an impact".

Tottenham open talks with Crystal Palace over Eberechi Eze

Spurs have held a long-standing interest in Eze, dating back to his time at QPR, but he subsequently signed for Palace in 2020. Eze has since developed into one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League and new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has set his sights on landing the 27-year-old before the summer transfer window closes. James Maddison is carried off the pitch by medical staff after being injured during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul on August 3 (Ahn Young-joon/AP) Frank is in need of creativity after chief playmaker James Maddison recently ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and with fellow midfielder Dejan Kulusevski still sidelined for the foreseeable future after his own knee surgery. After a failed pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White last month, Spurs have this week ramped up their transfer activity, opening talks with Manchester City on Monday over the signing of versatile attacker Savinho and now in discussions with Palace over Eze. England midfielder Eze has two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park and has helped the club to FA Cup and Community Shield success during recent months, the latter triumph achieved via a penalty shootout win over Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday. Thomas Frank is set to face the media in Udine later on Tuesday (Nigel French/PA) PA understands a release clause in the region of £68million remains active in Eze's current terms, but is set to expire on Friday. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will activate the clause or attempt to negotiate a more favourable deal, but the Europa League champions are determined to sign Eze, who scored 14 times and produced 11 assists in 43 appearances during the 2024-25 season. Spurs head coach Frank will be quizzed on transfers when he faces the media on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday evening's Super Cup clash with Paris St Germain in Udine.

Donnarumma ‘disappointed and disheartened' at PSG Super Cup squad omission

Italy international Donnarumma was an eye-catching omission from PSG's Super Cup squad for Wednesday's fixture with Tottenham in his home country. Big-money summer arrival Lucas Chevalier has been included and is set to make his PSG debut at Stadio Friuli after Luis Enrique confirmed he wanted a goalkeeper profile that was 'different' to Donnarumma. — GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA (@donnarumma) August 12, 2025 Italy captain Donnarumma has since taken to Instagram to criticise the decision and expressed his desire to say goodbye 'in the eyes one more time' to the PSG supporters at Parc des Princes. 'To the special Paris fans, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris St Germain,' Donnarumma said. 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success, I am disappointed and disheartened. 'I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. 'If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home. 'To my team-mates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. 'Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris.' Luis Enrique explained his decision in Udine, saying: 'These are always difficult decisions to make. 'I can definitely talk about Gigio, because he's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt. He's even better as a person. 'We're looking for a goalkeeping profile that is different to Donnarumma. It's always difficult to make the decision in these kinds of situations.' Luis Enrique also revealed Tottenham were once an option for him and admitted they have a physical advantage on Wednesday. The 55-year-old was linked with the vacancy at Spurs after Antonio Conte left in 2023, but Ange Postecoglou was eventually hired and Luis Enrique subsequently took over PSG in a sliding doors moment for both men. Postecoglou was able to mastermind Europa League success in May and end Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought, whilst Luis Enrique guided PSG to the holy grail of a maiden Champions League title. The pair will not face each other in Italy after Spurs ruthlessly discarded with Postecoglou following a poor domestic campaign and the appointment of Thomas Frank – alongside the fact they have been in pre-season training since early July, while PSG only returned last Wednesday after their Club World Cup exploits – gives the English outfit a slight edge, according to Luis Enrique. 'Well, I have to say that it is difficult because they changed recently the manager, new manager, some new players, they play a few friendly matches before tomorrow's match and I don't know what kind of game they are going to plan,' Luis Enrique acknowledged. The squad to face Tottenham! 📋🔴🔵#SuperCup — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) August 12, 2025 'It is going to be difficult because they have been training for the last month and we are in our first week, but it is not an excuse. 'We are going to try to compete at our best.' On Spurs' links, Luis Enrique added: 'Well, there were some options for me in the last six months before I came to Paris and Tottenham was one of them.'

The Ukraine international has agreed a five-year contract with the European champions in a deal reportedly worth an initial £54.5million, plus £2.6m in performance-related add-ons. Zabarnyi, 22, joined the Cherries in January 2023 from Dynamo Kyiv and went on to make 86 appearances for the Premier League side in all competitions. We can confirm that Illia Zabarnyi has completed a permanent transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. Everyone at #afcb would like to extend their thanks to Illia for his dedication and contribution while with the club ❤️ — AFC Bournemouth 🍒 (@afcbournemouth) August 12, 2025 'I'm very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain, the best club in the world, with the best project,' he told the Ligue 1 club's website. 'I am here to give everything I have on the pitch and I'm looking forward to making my debut and meeting the fans.' Zabarnyi is the third first-choice defender to leave Bournemouth this summer following the departure of Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid for £50m and Milos Kerkez's move to Liverpool in a £40m deal. During his time on the south coast, he played an instrumental role in back-to-back record-breaking finishes by helping Andoni Iraola's team twice surpass the club's highest points total in the Premier League. The Kiev-born centre-back, who has 49 international caps, was voted the Cherries' supporters' player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign. Paris St Germain are the Champions League holders (Mike Egerton/PA) PSG won the Champions League for the first time in May after beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich. Luis Enrique's French champions, who have also added goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to their squad during the current transfer window, face Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday before beginning their domestic title defence on Sunday away to Nantes. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: 'Illia is a talented international player and a great professional. 'He will make a major contribution to everything that we are building long-term at Paris Saint-Germain.'
