Ludhiana: If I can influence VB, Mann should resign, says Ashu
Continuing with his attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Saturday said that if his writ really runs in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), 'chief minister Bhagwant Mann does not deserve to hold his position even for a day as this means he has lost the confidence of and control over his government and departments'.
Asked about his reaction over AAP leaders repeatedly claiming that he had himself got the summons issued from the Ludhiana VB SSP to gain sympathy, Ashu retorted, 'If that is really true, then don't you think Bhagwant Mann, who is the chief minister and heads the home and vigilance departments, deserves to resign as he has no control over his own departments?'
'The AAP is completely frustrated and panic stricken as it has started feeling the ground slipping out from beneath their feet. Right now, the AAP candidate is at the third place and you never know his fortunes may dip further to the fourth place,' he said while claiming that the AAP candidate had confided it to his close aides that he had taken an unnecessary plunge into electoral politics.
To a question that CM Mann had justified the appointment of outsiders at various positions in the Punjab government by saying that talented people from one place can be posted at other places, Ashu asked, 'Tell us whether there has ever been any appointment of any Punjabi from Punjab in Delhi during over a decade of AAP rule there.'
'Their only aim and purpose today is to loot and rob as much as they can, knowing well that their time is up and over,' he observed, while adding, 'but let it be clear to them that they will be held to account for each and every penny they looted and robbed from Punjab'.
'You implicated people like me in false cases. Just remember the cycle of justice does take full turn and everybody will be held accountable,' he told the AAP government.
Asked to comment about the AAP and the BJP candidates, Ashu said, 'It is for the people of Ludhiana to decide and judge and I leave it to their judgement by presenting my case in front of them. In a democracy, everyone has the right to put up and present his case in the people's court and let the people decide.'

"Today, when I went there, women, elderly, youth - everyone cried bitterly. They were saying that they made a mistake by voting for the BJP. If Kejriwal were here, he would not have let our slums be demolished," posted Atishi. The operation was carried out to resolve the flooding issues caused by the narrowed drain, which obstructs water flow during heavy rains. 370 encroachments have been demolished, with 189 residents deemed eligible for resettlement and allocated flats in Narela, while 181 are ineligible for resettlement.

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday announced a set of measures aimed at tackling the capital's persistent air pollution problem, while sharply criticising the previous AAP-led government for its alleged failure to address the issue. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gupta said that due to the negligence and policy failures of past governments, Delhi had become the most polluted city in the country. 'But now the situation is changing. The government is working with a concrete and comprehensive strategy to control air pollution,' she further claimed. Outlining the current administration's efforts, she said an ambitious electric vehicle policy is being introduced to accelerate the shift away from polluting fuels. In addition, over 1,000 water sprinklers are being installed across the city to help suppress dust and particulate matter. Another major component of the government's plan involves expanding Delhi's green to Gupta, work is underway to plant more than 70 lakh trees in the capital in a bid to naturally combat air pollution and improve overall air quality. 'Making Delhi's air clean and pure is our top priority, and for this, decisive steps are being taken at every level,' the Chief Minister said. Delhi continues to grapple with hazardous air quality levels, particularly in the winter months, when stubble burning in neighbouring states, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollution contribute to choking smog, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Saturday recorded at poor levels at most monitoring stations, including Anand Vihar, Bawana, Shadipur, among others. Environmental experts have long called for sustained, long-term strategies to bring lasting relief.

Pope appoints Fr Jose Sebastian as new Bishop of Jalandhar
Pope Leo XIV Saturday appointed Fr Jose Sebastian Thekkumcherikunnel as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Jalandhar, in Punjab, a post that had remained virtually vacant for nearly seven years. Fr Jose (63) is currently serving as the financial administrator of the Diocese. 'His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rev. Jose Sebastian Thekkumcherikkunnel, a priest of the Diocese of Jullundur and currently serving as its Financial Administrator, as the new Bishop of Jullundur. The appointment was made public in Rome at noon (15:30 IST) on Saturday,' said Bishop Agnelo Rufino Gracias in a statement. Bishop Gracias, Emeritus Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay, has been serving as Apostolic Administrato of the Diocese of Jalandhar since 2018, when the last Bishop, Franco Mulakkal, was arrested after he was accused of rape by a nun. The Vatican had temporarily relieved him of his responsibilities as the Bishop. Though he was acquitted by a court in Kerala in 2022, the Vatican had asked for his resignation, and was accepted as 'pro bono Ecclesiae' (for the good of the Church), in June 2023. In a message, Bishop Gracias said, 'I was very keen that the one chosen to be the Bishop should be from among the ranks of the Jalandhar priests. I realize how much the Diocese suffered, because I came from outside with no knowledge of Punjabi and little acquaintance with the ethos of the Diocese. Fortunately, the Holy See has appointed a priest from the Diocese who knows it very well.' A meeting of the Diocesan Consultors is scheduled for June 9, during which the date and logistics of the Episcopal Ordination will be finalized and announced, read the statement. 'The Diocese looks forward with renewed hope and unity, trusting in the leadership of Bishop-elect Thekkumcherikkunnel to guide God's people with wisdom, compassion, and faith,' it added. Tarsem Peter, who is closely associated with the Diocese, said the local appointment will boost the confidence of the local Catholics. As per the details shared by the Diocese, Fr Jose was born in 1962 in Kalaketty, Kerala and was ordained a priest on May 1, 1991 for the Diocese of Jalandhar. He began his ministry as Assistant Parish Priest at St Mary's Church in Fatehgarh Churiana and served as Parish Priest at St Joseph's Church in Khasa and Sacred Heart Church in Amritsar, before being appointed as principal of St Francis School. From 1996 to 2002, he served as Dean and Parish Priest of St Francis Church in Amritsar and later at Jandiala Guru. From 2002 to 2004, he obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. On his return to Jalandhar, he served as Vice Chancellor, Defender of the Bond, and Director of Village Catechesis. From 2007 to 2020, he was Chancellor and Judicial Vicar of the Diocese. He also taught at the Holy Trinity Regional Major Seminary in Jalandhar and served as Head of the Theology Department. For next two years, he served as Rector and Parish Priest of St Mary's Cathedral in Jalandhar Cantonment. Since 2022, he has been the Financial Administrator of the Diocese and was currently serving as the Parish Priest of St Joseph's Church in Phagwara and Director of St Joseph's Convent School.
