32 level-crossing gates in Tiruchi Division identified for installing electrically operated lifting barriers

The Hindu06-06-2025
More level-crossing gates in Tiruchi Railway Division have been identified for installation of Electrically Operated Lifting Barriers (EOLBs) aimed at enhancing efficiency in train operations and to eliminate the need for physical effort to open or close them.
Sanction has been accorded for installation of EOLBs at 32 level-crossing gates in Tiruchi Railway Division's limits during the 2025-26 financial year. A majority of these gates are situated along the Villupuram-Katpadi broad gauge section, said railway sources.
The Tiruchi Division has floated a tender for EOLB and emergency sliding boom at interlocked gates in the Villupuram-Katpadi section and at interlocked gates along the Villupuram-Tiruchi chord line section via Vriddhachalam and Ariyalur.
The work of installing EOLBs at level crossing gates commenced in the last financial year in Tiruchi Division which has under its jurisdiction the Villupuram-Tiruchi chord line section; Villupuram-Thanjavur via Mayiladuthurai and Kumbakonam main line section, Villupuram-Katpadi section and other branch lines.
The sources said 45 level-crossing gates in the division had been provided with EOLBs up to May 31. The major sections where EOLBs have been installed were the mainline section where this provision had been made in 14 gates besides in eight gates along the Thanjavur - Karaikal section and six gates in the Tiruvarur-Mayiladuthurai branch line, the sources further said.
The railway administration had taken up installation of EOLBs in a sustained manner to enable swift operation of level-crossing gates and with a view to enhance efficiency of train operations. Unlike mechanical gates, electrically operated lifting barriers eliminate the need for physical effort on the part of the gatekeepers to open or close them. They function using relay technology with push-button operation.
In a mechanically operated systems, the gates are opened and closed by rotating winches with wire ropes enabling the lifting and lowering of the barriers. This process takes the gatekeepers two to three minutes to complete following specific safety protocols. However, with respect to gates where EOLBs have been installed, a control panel with knobs and push buttons along with LED indications are provided. These barriers can be operated individually or simultaneously with the time required for opening or closing lasting only a few seconds. A lock pawl is provided to secure the boom in a horizontal position when fully lowered. Safety protocols at these gates are completed without manual intervention.
The EOLBs would reduce the operational time of the lifting barriers thereby reducing the waiting time for the road users at the gates.

EA launches national plan to document rare flora in Eastern Hajar

Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has launched a national initiative to monitor and classify rare trees and plants in the Eastern Hajar mountain range, one of Oman's richest natural environments. Announced last week, the project seeks to build a comprehensive database of endangered and endemic flora and support efforts to preserve the country's biodiversity. 'The Eastern Hajar mountains are home to unique and sensitive plant life, including the juniper tree which is facing threat from various environmental factors,' an EA official said. 'This initiative is designed to protect these species through accurate documentation and scientific monitoring.' Besides junipers, the mountains host endemic flora as Herniaria, Pteropyrum, Rumex, Dionysia, Tephrosia, Searsia, Polygala, Convolvulus, Teucrium, Verbascum, Iphiona, Schweinfurthia and Ziziphus . The announcement was made during a meeting between EA officials of North Sharqiyah and University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Ibra. Both sides discussed cooperation in fieldwork and the use of advanced tools such as high-resolution imaging, GPS and digital databases. University officials said their role will be to provide scientific expertise in plant research and classification, while the authority will coordinate field operations. 'We aim to apply internationally recognised methodologies to ensure the accuracy and reliability of this project,' a university representative said. According to the authority, the database will include location, biological characteristics and natural habitats of rare plants. The information will support national preservation efforts, scientific research, higher education and public awareness. 'This is an important step in safeguarding Oman's biodiversity and ensuring future generations understand the value of these ecosystems,' the EA official added.

Oman's public debt falls to RO14.1bn by Q2 2025

Muscat – Oman's public debt decreased to RO14.1bn by the end of the second quarter of 2025, down from RO14.4bn during the same period in 2024. Public revenue for the quarter totalled RO5,839mn, 6% less than RO6,197mn in Q2 2024, largely due to lower hydrocarbon earnings. Net oil revenue was RO3,018mn, down 10% from RO3,362mn, following a drop in average oil prices and production. Net gas revenue amounted to RO884mn, reflecting a 6% decrease from RO943mn in the corresponding quarter of 2024. Current revenue rose slightly to RO1,928mn, up 2% from RO1,882mn recorded in Q2 2024. Ministry of Finance reported that over RO749mn was paid to the private sector – received through the financial system with complete documentation during Q2 2025 – reflecting the ministry's commitment to settling dues within an average of five working days. Public spending during the quarter totalled RO6,098mn, up 5% from RO5,806mn in Q2 2024, primarily driven by higher development expenditure. Current expenditure amounted to RO4,118mn, slightly lower than RO4,165mn in Q2 2024, while development spending by ministries and government units accounted for RO688mn, representing 76% of the total development allocation of RO900mn for 2025. Contributions and other expenses rose 7% to RO1,161mn compared to RO1,088mn in the same period last year. Subsidies included RO339mn to the electricity sector, RO289mn to the social protection system, RO44mn for oil products, and RO200mn transferred for future debt obligations. Spending on social sectors and basic services reached RO3,122mn by the end of Q2 2025, reflecting the government's continued focus on supporting essential public services.

Share of renewable energy up 11.5% in Oman

By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – The contribution of renewable energy to electricity production in Oman was 11.5% as of May, reflecting the sultanate's ongoing strategy to increase the share of clean energy to 30% by 2030 and 60% by 2040. Ministry of Energy and Minerals highlighted significant growth in renewable energy in recent years, driven by the launch of major solar and wind projects. Key projects already functional include the Dhofar 1 wind farm, Ibri 2 solar plant, and Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar facilities, which form the backbone of Oman's energy transition strategy. The ministry confirmed that several major projects are set to progress this year. These include the Ibri 3 solar plant of estimated 500MW capacity, the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali wind farm (100MW) and Dhofar 2 wind farm (120MW). Additional projects in the pipeline include the Sadah wind farm (90MW), Mahout 1 and Mahout 2 wind farms (each 300–400MW), Al Kamel solar plant (280MW) and another 220MW solar project. The ministry stated that these renewable energy initiatives support Oman's economic diversification and sustainable energy goals while contributing to environmental protection by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Efforts are also underway to expand renewable energy deployment across wilayats in line with the 2030 target of raising the sector's contribution to electricity generation to 30%.
