Too busy to pursue a fitness routine or sticking to diet for your wellness? Yoga trainer Saurabh Bothra says even following a few simple healthy habits every day can be life-changing, rather than making difficult and drastic lifestyle changes. Saurabh Bothra says habit-building can contribute towards healthy living.(Saurabh Bothra)
Bothra, who offers habit-building programs and live guided sessions through his platform HaBuild, shared his top 5 tips for healthy living, in a LiveMint interview. Check out his tips:
1. Drink water: According to the yoga coach, staying hydrated with plain glasses of water can be very beneficial for health. Apart from boosting digestion and enhancing skin health, it also offers one more benefit. Bothra says, "Drinking a lot of water will make you go to the washroom more than once, and encourage movement."
2. Move: If you are a busy working professional who spends more time sitting than standing, make sure you get up and move around at least after every hour. "In our office, we have a trend of doing an 3-minute activity after every hour. We do squats, deep breathing or anything that makes us move around," says Bothra, suggesting how to increase movement.
3. Deep breathing: The Nagpur-based trainer highly recommends a session of deep breathing for busy professionals. He says even 5 minutes of conscious breathing practice can feel therapeutic for people who are often caught between work and home-related pressures. "It's a great stress-buster," he says. Bothra recommends box breathing (inhale, hold, exhale, and hold, each for a count of four) and coherent breathing (inhale and exhale for the same duration of around 5 seconds)
4. Sleep on time: It's what our parents told us time and again as kids. Now as adults, it's time to pay attention to your sleep hygiene. "Everyone to sleep before 11:00 pm at least. However busy you may be, after 11:00 p.m., most people are often just doing time-pass. Good sleep quantity and quality are very important healthy habits," he adds.
5. Workout: If your schedule does not allow you to workout every day, try it at least thrice a week for 45 minutes each, suggests Bothra, who helps people adopt yoga through his online platform.
Apart from these tips, he has a pro tip to share: "Don't try to do five things together! It doesn't work like that. Do a small thing for seven days or 14 days and then start adding one more thing, and then another. Don't try to do everything at once, otherwise we usually fail and go in that all-or-nothing trap. Either we do everything or we just stop doing, and then wait for 1st of January to come again," he says. Stress management is also a very important part of maintaining good health. Asked about his strategy to deal with stress, Bothra responds, 'There are days that really get to me. My best practice to deal with stress is to go to sleep. So the days I'm busier, I go to sleep early so that I can make sure that my next day becomes better.'

Independence Day: Stretch, stay active, gift yourself freedom from aches

As India marks its 79th Independence Day, it's worth remembering that freedom is also about the ability to move without pain or limitation. Aches, stiffness, and fatigue can erode our mobility long before we notice. However, simple, consistent habits can protect joints, strengthen muscles, and help us enjoy every step with ease. Here are some doctor-backed ways to protect your mobility and live pain-free: 1. Protect your knees early Many people develop early cartilage damage in their 30s without symptoms, according to Dr Sandeep Chauhan, senior consultant, orthopaedics, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding high-impact strain, and strengthening thigh muscles can reduce the risk of future knee pain. 2. Follow the 2-per-20 rule for blood sugar and stiffness A meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine titled The Acute Effects of Interrupting Prolonged Sitting Time in Adults with Standing and Light-Intensity Walking on Biomarkers of Cardiometabolic Health in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis found that light walking for even 2–5 minutes every 20–30 minutes significantly reduced postprandial (after-meal) blood glucose and insulin levels compared to prolonged for two minutes after every 20 minutes of sitting in your office. This not only improves insulin sensitivity but also prevents stiffness from long hours at a desk. 3. Fix your posture before it fixes you Long hours at a desk can lead to poor spine alignment, warned Dr Sushanth B Mummigatti, Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon at Manipal Hospital Goa. Adjust your chair and screen height, keep your feet flat, and take frequent breaks to stretch your back and shoulders. 4. Walk your way to pain-free living A study published in JAMA Network Open titled 'Volume and Intensity of Walking and Risk of Chronic Low Back Pain', found that walking for 100 minutes daily can significantly reduce the risk of chronic low back pain. Even if you cannot hit 10,000 steps, consistent walking supports cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and boosts mood. 5. Use yoga to undo desk damage Simple desk-friendly yoga stretches, especially for wrists, neck, and back, can relieve tension and prevent repetitive strain injuries, said Dr Umashankar Kaushik, Assistant Professor in Yoga Shastra at Mumbai-based K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies. Incorporating short yoga sessions into your workday improves posture, flexibility, and mental calm. 6. Stretch at work to keep moving well From seated spinal twists to shoulder rolls, regular desk stretches improve circulation and ease tightness. These micro-breaks, as experts note, help maintain joint health and make sitting for long hours less harmful.

Why is UnitedHealth stock in focus today? Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathway makes a significant announcement...

Berkshire Hathaway revealed four new investments Thursday in steelmaker Nucor, insurer UnitedHealth and two of the nation's biggest homebuilders — Lennar and DR Horton — but it's not clear if the investments are big enough to ensure that legendary investor Warren Buffett handled them. Buffett, who plans to retire as CEO at the end of the year after six decades of building Berkshire, handles all of the conglomerate's biggest investments worth $1 billion or more. Three of the new investments disclosed Thursday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission are worth less than that, so they could be the ideas of one of Berkshire's two other investment managers. But Berkshire's new UnitedHealth stake that was also revealed Thursday was worth $1.57 billion, so that one could be big enough to be Buffett's handiwork. Berkshire got permission from the SEC to keep the other three investments confidential earlier this year while it built those stakes, but it apparently bought nearly 5 million UnitedHealth shares just in the second quarter. That stock jumped nearly 8% in aftermarket trading. Berkshire's filings simply offer a snapshot of its $258 billion portfolio at the end of the second quarters. Many investors comb through Berkshire's filings every quarter because they like to follow Buffett's moves. His record of trouncing the S&P 500 for decades has inspired legions of followers. The filing doesn't make clear who at Berkshire handled each investment. Besides Buffett, Ted Weschler and Todd Combs also pick stocks, but they generally handle smaller portfolios and Combs also serves as Geico's CEO. But Buffett has had a hard time finding stocks or any other investments in recent years that he wants to invest much of Berkshire's $344 billion cash in. Berkshire's Nucor stake of 6.6 million shares was the biggest new investment worth roughly $857 million at the end of the quarter. Shares of that company rose more than 6% in extended after-hours trading. The Lennar investment was worth nearly $800 million. While the DR Horton stake was much smaller worth $191.5 million. Those companies' stocks also saw gains in late trading Buffett already knows quite a lot about the home building business because Berkshire owns the nation's largest manufactured homebuilder, Clayton Homes. Besides stocks, Berkshire owns dozens of companies in a variety of industries including Geico insurance, BNSF railroad, several major utilities and an assortment of manufacturing and retail companies. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company's holdings include many well-known brands like See's Candy and Dairy Queen.
