Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated on Thursday that the state govt's land pooling policy would involve no forcible acquisition, as it entails voluntary participation by landowners.
The statement came a day after
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) criticised the state housing department's plan to acquire a record 24,311 acres in southern Ludhiana for urban estates, marking the largest single land acquisition planned in a single region.
Cheema said, "The opposition parties, who patronised the land mafia, are now making wild allegations. No farmer's land will be acquired forcibly. Instead, we're making a significant departure from past practices, prioritising voluntary participation and empowering landowners to become active stakeholders in the state's progress."
He added, "The policy's core principle of 100% voluntary participation. Under this visionary policy, there will be no forcible land acquisition.
We developed a model that respects the rights and aspirations of our farmers and landowners."
Cheema also highlighted the economic benefits for participating landowners. "The policy directly addresses the growing demand for affordable housing in our urban centres, driven by Punjab's rapid urbanization.

Market estimates indicate that farmers who engage in this Land Pooling Policy stand to gain up to a 400 percent return on their land investment, "he stated.
He said that the development agencies of the state govt would undertake the development of pooled land, ensuring the provision of modern infrastructure, including roads, water supply, sewerage, drainage, and electricity. "Once developed, the land, returned to the original landowners as per their contribution, will appreciate significantly.
Landowners will have the autonomy to utilize their developed land as they see fit, whether for personal use or for sale," he said.
He claimed that the land pooling was in contrast to the "land mafia" and the era of "illegal colonies" and forcible land acquisitions. "For the past three decades, the Congress, Akali-BJP governments have operated in collusion with the land mafia, enriching their political allies at the expense of our farmers. This policy puts an end to that corrupt system," he alleged.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk feud turns ugly as NFL stars like Robert Griffin III and Ryan Clark become unlikely pawns

The Trump-Musk feud took an unexpected turn when former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III (Getty Images) What started as a political alliance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has morphed into a bitter feud—but it's the NFL community that's now hijacked the narrative. After Musk publicly attacked Trump's spending bill and Trump clapped back with personal jabs, the internet exploded with takes. But when former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) stepped into the fray, things took an unexpected turn toward the gridiron. RG3's sports analogy request backfires in real-time 'Give me the Elon Musk vs. Donald Trump beef in Sports Terms only,' Robert Griffin III posted on X (formerly Twitter), assuming the internet would drop clever NBA or MLB references. Instead, fans turned the spotlight on him. 'You vs. Ryan Clark,' one user replied—instantly reviving RG3's own ugly history with former Steelers safety and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark. What was supposed to be a fun sports take on a political feud quickly morphed into a resurfacing of NFL beefs that never fully healed. Revisiting the RG3-Ryan Clark drama: race, respect, and resentment The Clark-RG3 tension originally ignited when Griffin criticized LSU star Angel Reese for how she handled her rivalry with Caitlin Clark. Ryan Clark didn't mince words, essentially accusing Griffin of lacking empathy for Black women because of his own life choices—particularly his interracial marriages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo 'You can't understand the lived experience,' Clark said, igniting a firestorm. RG3 fired back hard, saying Clark crossed a personal line by dragging his wife into it. Clark then doubled down, calling RG3 'phony' and one of the worst teammates he'd ever had, both in the locker room and on TV. Though Clark later apologized for referencing Griffin's wife, the two have yet to publicly bury the hatchet. Fans weren't done. Others compared the Trump-Musk meltdown to Tyreek Hill praising Tua Tagovailoa over Patrick Mahomes, a dig that drew sharp reactions in NFL circles. Some said the closest match was the Kobe vs. Shaq feud—two larger-than-life forces who accomplished greatness, only to implode under the weight of ego and ambition. Fed likely to leave rates unchanged as US job market cools but doesn't crumble

Federal Reserve policymakers have already signaled they are in no rush to cut interest rates , and a government report on Friday showing the labor market is far from crumbling amid big trade policy changes only cements that stance. The Labor Department 's monthly employment report showed the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2% last month. Employers added 139,000 jobs, which combined with downward revisions to prior months' estimates showed a cooling in labor demand but nothing abrupt; by comparison, job gains averaged 160,000 last year. U.S. President Donald Trump ratcheted up his calls for rate cuts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Honda CR-V Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) SneakerToast Undo "Go for a full point, Rocket Fuel," Trump said in a post on Truth Social that urged the Fed to lower rates by 100 basis points. The president added that the Fed could simply increase rates again if inflation reignited. But the latest job growth reading is already giving Fed policymakers more comfort about holding the U.S. central bank's policy rate steady as they watch to see how higher import tariffs affect the economy. Live Events It "was a solid report and I was pleased with it," Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker told CNBC, adding that now was the time for the Fed to hold policy steady. Fed officials have telegraphed that they intend to do just that at their June 17-18 policy meeting. Financial markets have been betting the Fed will wait until September to cut rates and will deliver a second reduction in borrowing costs by December; after the jobs report they trimmed their bets on a possible third rate cut by the end of this year. "Continued strength in the jobs number provides further support for the Fed's patience," said Scott Helfstein, Global X's head of investment strategy. "The Fed is likely to remain on hold through the end of summer to see how tariff negotiations proceed and ensure prices are stabilizing." Analysts said they expect more softening ahead in the labor market as higher import levies and government policy uncertainty strain economic growth. Job gains in May were concentrated in a narrowing range of industries, including healthcare, and manufacturing lost jobs in its worst showing since January, the employment report showed. The workforce shrank by the most in 17 months. Fed policymakers, however, have signaled they are disinclined to act preemptively to cushion any emerging weakness in jobs, especially with higher tariffs seen likely to also push up prices and potentially reignite inflationary pressures. The takeaway on the labor market for the Fed, said Krishna Guha, vice chairman of Evercore ISI, is that, "given the lack of any serious cracks to date, the risk of waiting several more months to learn more with policy in a modestly restrictive posture looks low."
