FIFA redefines ‘Club World Champions' status after Chelsea's triumph; tags past winners as ‘Intercontinental Champions'
In his new format, where 32 teams participated in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, Chelsea went home with the all-new trophy and a hefty cash prize. The new FIFA development also means that Chelsea will be listed as Intercontinental Champions once and Club World Cup champions. Real Madrid are the most successful side in the FIFA Club World Cup with five titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022).
The other teams to have won the Club World Cup baring Chelsea are Barcelona, Corinthians, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Sao Paulo, Internacional, AC Milan, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Manchester City - all to be known as Intercontinental Champions.
The development first came to light, according to Daily Mail report, when FIFA posted a photo of winning Chelsea team with a caption 'The first ever FIFA CWC Champions." However, the FIFA edited the caption to make it 'CHELSEA ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS.'

How Did Felix Choose Al Nassr Over Benfica? Cristiano Ronaldo Played A Part: Report
Last Updated: Cristiano Ronaldo has convinced Joao Felix to join Al Nassr for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasising national team synergy. Star Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo raised a plan, citing the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to convince Joao Felix to join him at Al Nassr, according to a report in Portuguese outlet Record. After two weeks of facing an uncertain future, Felix is reportedly all set to complete a move to Al Nassr. The report says that Ronaldo removed the youngster's concerns about choosing Al Nassr over Benfica by using a very powerful argument: the national team. Ronaldo said that by playing together at the Saudi team, both he and Felix could develop a profound understanding of themselves throughout 40 to 50 official games, besides 300 joint training sessions before the FIDE World Cup. According to the report, Ronaldo said that their playing together could prove decisive in manager Roberto Martinez's final choice for the Portuguese national side. Felix understood the implication of that, which played a crucial role in his decision to join Ronaldo at Al Nassr. Felix signed for Chelsea last year for a reported fee of £44.5m, after joining the team on a loan deal in 2023. Felix is one of several players Chelsea have put up for sale this summer, along with the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson. Felix hoped to revive his career in Serie A but continued to struggle, forcing AC Milan to change their plans and reject the opportunity to sign him. Despite his struggles, Felix still had supporters at Benfica and his boyhood club was in advanced negotiations to bring him back, but it seems like Ronaldo's words had a bigger impact on him. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Monfils says he has played his final Toronto Open after opening round loss
Gael Monfils said he has played for the last time in Toronto after crashing out of the Masters in Sunday's opening round of the ATP Masters to a Chilean qualifier. The 38-year-old French tennis icon missed out on four match points to exit 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3) to number 142 Tomas Barrios Vera, who won the first Masters match of his career and ended a seven-match loss streak at the ATP level. Monfils symbolically touched the baseline as he walked off a loser after nearly three hours in torrid summer temperatures approaching 35 Celsius. ALSO READ: Fernandez cruises past Kalinskaya to win Washington Open title 'There's no explanation, it's the last one,' he said. 'It will be two years to play (again) in Toronto, so pretty much I won't be able to play it. Obviously, I think the next one is too old for me, so I think it was the last time I'll play here.' He added: 'I actually thought at the end, and I was like, 'Well, I think it's, unfortunately, but the last time I think I would play here.'' Monfils had little good to say about his effort. 'Without taking credit from my opponent, (it was a) bad match from my side, not the quality that I want, not the level that I want to perform,' he said. '(I need to) try to work hard, feel this winning (habit come) back a little bit and try to still believe. 'Keep my head up, even though it's not easy, but I will try my best.'
