
Diageo eyes £625m in cost savings after profits tumble
It came as the group, which also makes Johnnie Walker whisky and Gordon's gin, saw net sales edge marginally lower amid weaker consumer demand for some spirits as younger people continue to moderate drinking habits.
The London-listed spirits giant said it is seeking to secure £625 million in cost savings, increasing from a previous target of £500 million savings.
Nik Jhangiani, interim boss of the firm, said the savings plan is 'not about job cuts' but added that 'there will be some' as a result. He stressed that the group could still increase its overall workforce.
Diageo said it expects to secure these savings over the next three years from advertising and promotion efficiencies, reduced overheads and supply chain improvements.
The increased savings plans come amid a period of upheaval at the group after the departure of its previous boss last month.
Debra Crew stepped down as chief executive with 'immediate effect' and by 'mutual agreement', following a recent decline in Diageo's share value.
Tariffs, cautious consumer demand and increased cost pressures have weighed down businesses across the drinks industry.
On Tuesday, Diageo reported that net sales dipped 0.1% to 20.2 billion US dollars for the year, although organic sales grew by 1.7%.
It said the drop in net sales was driven by unfavourable currency rates and changes to its brand portfolio.
In Europe, Diageo reported that net sales were up 0.4%, with a 6.7% rise in Great Britain, despite a decline in the volume of sales.
It said stronger sales in Britain were driven by the continued strong demand for Guinness, although this was held back by 'supply constraints' which saw some pubs run short of the Irish stout earlier this year.
The firm revealed that operating profits fell 27.8% to 4.33 billion dollars (£3.3 billion) in the year to June 30.
Mr Jhangiani said: 'While macroeconomic uncertainty and the resulting pressure on consumers continues to weigh on the spirits sector, we believe in the attractive long-term fundamentals of our industry and in our ability to continue to outperform as the TBA (total beverage alcohol) landscape evolves.
'We are focused on what we can manage and control and executing at pace.
'The board and management are committed to delivering improved financial performance and stronger shareholder returns on a sustained basis.'

Oil rises 1% on US demand strength, though macroeconomic uncertainty remains
Aug 7 (Reuters) - Oil prices rose 1% on Thursday, pausing a five-day losing streak, on signs of steady demand in the U.S., the world's biggest oil user, though uncertainty about the macroeconomic impacts of U.S. tariffs limited gains. Brent crude futures rose 62 cents, or 0.9%, to $67.51 a barrel by 0342 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $65.03 a barrel, up 68 cents, or 1.1%. Both benchmarks slid about 1% to their lowest in eight weeks on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks about progress in talks with Moscow. Trump could meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as next week, a White House official said on Wednesday, though the U.S. continued preparations to impose secondary sanctions, including potentially on China, to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. Russia is the world's second-biggest producer of crude after the U.S. Still, oil markets were supported from a bigger-than-expected draw in U.S. crude inventories last week. The Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday that U.S. crude oil stockpiles fell by 3 million barrels to 423.7 million barrels in the week ended August 1, exceeding analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 591,000-barrel draw. Inventories fell as U.S. crude exports climbed and refinery runs climbed, with utilization on the Gulf Coast, the country's biggest refining region, and the West Coast climbing to their highest since 2023. Analysts at JP Morgan said in a note that global oil demand through August 5 has averaged 104.7 million barrels per day, tracking annual growth of 300,000 bpd, but 90,000 bpd below their forecast for the month. "Despite a slightly soft start to the month, relative to our expectations, high frequency indicators of oil demand suggest global oil consumption is likely to improve sequentially over the coming weeks," the analysts said, with jet fuel and petrochemical feedstocks anticipated to drive the consumption growth. Still, global macroeconomic uncertainty after the U.S. ordered a fresh set of tariffs on Indian goods capped price gains. Trump on Wednesday imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing their continued imports of Russian oil. The new import tax will go into effect 21 days after August 7. "While these new duties (on India by the U.S.) are set to take effect in three weeks, markets are already pricing in the downstream ripple effects on trade flows, emerging market demand, and broader energy diplomacy," said Phillip Nova's senior market analyst Priyanka Sachdeva. Trump also said he could announce further tariffs on China similar to the 25% duties announced earlier on India over its purchases of Russian oil. "Tariffs are likely to harm the global economy, which will ultimately affect fuel demand," said Phillip Nova's Sachdeva, adding that markets are overlooking the fact that its impact will still be much greater on the U.S. economy and inflation.

Scotch whisky giant Diageo chief executive faces huge task
The ongoing strife appeared to reach its nadir at Diageo last month, when it parted company with chief executive Debra Crew with immediate effect, by mutual agreement. Ms Crew had been little more than two years in the role. A tumultuous reign saw her preside over a slump in sales in Latin America that led to the company issuing a profit warning in November 2023, and the launch of a major cost-cutting drive in May this year in response to President Donald Trump's global tariffs campaign, which is having a major impact on Scotch exports to the US. But her pledge to deliver around $500m of cost savings failed to move the City, as Diageo's share price continued to falter and, according to reports, faith in Ms Crew's ability to reverse the situation steadily eroded. An announcement to the stock market on July 16 confirmed her departure, with Mr Jhangiani - a relative newcomer to Diageo - stepping into the role on an interim basis. It can certainly be argued that Ms Crew was dealt a difficult hand. Many of the difficulties Diageo has endured over the last couple of years have affected other major companies too, including Chivas Brothers parent Pernod Ricard, and Remy Cointreau, owner of the Bruichladdich Distillery. In July, Glasgow-based Edrington, owner of The Macallan and Highland Park, cited a 'hostile trading environment' as it reported a 26% slide in profits to £274.4m for the year to March 31. That was followed by a similar profits fall at William Grant & Sons, owner of Glenfiddich: its profits dropped by 30% to £388m in 2024. Read more: Such struggles were also writ large in export figures released by the Scotch Whisky Association in February, which revealed the value of exports dipped by 3.7% to £5.4bn in 2024. Ms Crew was not the architect of the macroeconomic upheaval that has swept across the global spirits markets over the last couple of years, or the uncertainty sparked by US tariffs. Neither was she responsible for the rise in 'moderation' and shunning of alcohol by increasing numbers of younger adults, which is increasingly presenting a challenge to spirits producers. But it is tough at the top of the drinks business and at any rate that is all in the past now, and when market watchers tuned in on Tuesday it was to see where Diageo goes from here. And it seemed that at least some in the City liked what Mr Jhangiani, who joined Diageo as chief financial officer in September, had to report. Shares in the company leapt by nearly 5% on the day and gained a further 4% on Wednesday, which may largely have been down to its pledge to go further with the cost-cutting plans initiated by Ms Crew, rather than because of of any improvement in the macroeconomic or geopolitical outlook. The company raised its cost-saving target under its Accelerate programme by $125 million to $625m over the next three years, which Mr Jhangiani said was 'not about' job cuts but finding cash for reinvestment in its brands. City observers may also have been encouraged by Diageo reiterating its commitment to undertake 'appropriate and selective disposals over the coming years'. Recent deals by Diageo have included the sale of its majority shareholding in Guinness Nigeria, and the agreement to swap its majority ownership of Ciroc vodka in North America for an interest in Tequila brand Lobos 1707. Mr Jhangiani was asked if the company would sell any of its Scotch whisky distilleries as part of its disposal programme but dodged the question to some extent. He said Diageo was continuing to grow its share of the Scotch whisky category and flagged the potential of building exports to India, following the recent signing of the UK-India free trade agreement. He said this would be good for Scotch and Scotland as a whole. Speaking more generally, Mr Jhangiani was at pains to talk up Diageo's strengths and 'fantastic brands', as well as encouraging performances by Don Julio Tequila, Guinness and Crown Royal Blackberry Canadian whisky in the year to June (for which the company reported a 27.8% fall in operating profit to $4.335bn). But he emphasised that the global economic backdrop remained challenging and that 'there is clearly much more to do' to boost the company's prospects. As Mr Jhangiani expanded on the work Diageo was doing to 'sharpen' its focus, many of the details he shared would have made more sense to drinks sales people and marketers than newspaper journalists. But some of it seemed so sensible that you wondered why the company was not already doing it, for example the development of individual strategies for Italy, Spain and France – given that people have different drinks preferences in these countries – instead of lumping them all together under the banner of Southern Europe. Doubtless, given the company's scale (it has more than 30,000 employees) and reach across the world, the process of learning how markets behave and how to respond to that is surely a never-ending process, and one that requires considerable ongoing investment. There will never be a situation when everything is plain sailing in all of the many countries within which Diageo operates. But while there are many things Diageo can control it remains, like all companies, at the mercy of macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds that currently seem to be as bracing as they have been for many years. Fundamentally, whoever gets the top job at Diageo on a permanent basis will need those headwinds to settle down if they are to have any chance of success.

Keir Starmer must let in sunlight to avoid further lobbying scandals
Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton long ago predicted that lobbying would be 'the next big scandal' to hit politics, warning of the dangers of what happens behind closed doors. 'We all know how it works. The lunches, the hospitality, the quiet word in your ear, the ex-ministers and ex-advisers for hire, helping big business find the right way to get its way,' he said in 2010. It was somewhat apt that despite introducing the first real oversight for lobbyists, the former prime minister was caught in just such a scandal after he departed from office. Despite a repeated cycle of scandals involving what Lord Cameron spoke of, lobbyists have continued to work in the shadows. As this newspaper has exposed, the Starmer government is facing serious questions over 'cash for access' after businesses were approached by a Labour group offering private meetings with 'an influential Labour figure'. The Labour Infrastructure Forum (LIF), which is run by lobbyists from Bradshaw Advisory along with an advisory council of senior party figures, has offered businesses the chance to meet 'key policymakers' to help 'shape the discussion'. The forum has offered sponsorship packages for potential clients, including breakfast meetings for almost £9,500. Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the Treasury, has spoken at an LIF event. • Labour 'leaving public in the dark' about payments from lobbyists Although the LIF insists that the sponsorship money is used to cover costs, the group declined a request by The Times to disclose details of which companies had sponsored events at what cost until its next annual report. The Labour Party too has declined to say which senior figures had attended any LIF meetings. Yet undercover reporting has shown Gerry McFall, director of the forum alongside his leading role at Bradshaw Advisory, boasted of meetings between his clients and senior figures in government, including Jonathan Reynolds, the business secretary. There is a clear problem here that must be addressed. The Office of the Registrar of Consultant Lobbyists, which was set up during Lord Cameron's premiership, governs lobbying and is supposed to ensure it is transparent and open. Businesses who regularly engage in lobbying, known as 'consultant lobbyists', are required to register their activities. Yet the LIF was not required to register as it did not fall under this category: in-house lobbyists who are employed directly by companies, think tanks or 'forums' are not required to register. This must be addressed: all lobbying activity should be recorded, along with the details of who exactly is meeting which ministers. That being said, ministers should show more common sense. Mr Jones should have done due diligence before speaking at an LIF event. The same goes for Mr Reynolds, the minister most exposed to the potential influence of businesses. The lack of records charting his meeting with a Bradshaw Advisory client at a Labour conference highlights another flaw in transparency rules, which does not require ministers to report meetings at such events not deemed to be in a ministerial capacity. Even if the party insists it was instead 'held in a political capacity', Mr Reynolds should have realised that he should strive for transparency. • How we exposed Labour's cosy links to lobbyists None of this is to say that all lobbying is inherently bad, or that onerous restrictions are required. It is essential to good policy making that ministers hear from businesses — particularly a government that has as little private sector experience as this one. But it must be done in an open and transparent manner, something lacking at present. According to an analysis by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, registered Westminster lobbyists account for just 0.5 per cent of registered lobbyists across a host of similar countries. If Sir Keir Starmer is to avoid further such scandals, he must strengthen the oversight. By letting in as much sunlight as possible, it will go some way to curtail any sense of wrongdoing, real or perceived.
