US justice department asks court to unseal Epstein grand jury records
Agency: PTI Last Updated: WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department asked a federal court on Friday to unseal grand jury transcripts in Jeffrey Epstein's case amid a firestorm over the Trump administration's handling of records related to the wealthy financier. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche filed motions urging the court to release the Epstein transcripts as well as those in the case against convicted British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell a day after President Donald Trump directed the Justice department to do so. The Trump administration has been embroiled in controversy since the Justice Department last week announced that it would not be releasing any more evidence in its possession from Epstein's investigation. Trump's demand to release the grand jury transcripts came after The Wall Street Journal reported on a sexually suggestive letter that the newspaper says bore Trump's name and was included in a 2003 album for Epstein's 50th birthday. Trump denied writing the letter, calling it 'false, malicious, and defamatory." The Justice Department said it will work with with prosecutors in New York to make appropriate redactions of victim-related information and other personally identifying information before transcripts are released. Grand jury transcripts — which could show the testimony of witnesses and other evidence presented by prosecutors — are rarely released by courts, unless they need to be disclosed in connection with a judicial proceeding. Even with the Justice Department endorsement, it could take weeks or months of legal wrangling to decide what can be released and how to protect witnesses and other sensitive victim information. IDF kills Hamas commander, hits 75 terror targets in latest operation
The Israel Defence Forces on Sunday stated that they had killed Bashar Thabet, a commander in Hamas' Development and Projects Department within its weapons production headquater. Thabet was reportedly responsible for research and development in Hamas' weapons manufacturing apparatus. The IDF said that they located and dismantled terrorist infrastructure, terrorists and tunnel shafts. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has also been involved, striking approximately 75 terror targets, including terrorists' military compounds and additional terrorists' infrastructure. "Operational Update: IDF Activity in Gaza- Eliminated: Bashar Thabet, a commander in Hamas' Development and Projects Department within its weapons production HQ. He was responsible for research & development within Hamas' weapons manufacturing apparatus, which operates to restore and increase their weapons stockpile," the IDF said in a post on X. "IDF troops located & dismantled terrorist infrastructure, terrorists and tunnel shafts. The IAF targeted terrorist cells that were about to attack IDF troops and struck approx. 75 terror targets, including terrorists military compounds and additional terrorist infrastructure," it added. The Israeli military killed at least 115 Palestinians, including 92 aid seekers and two civil defence aid workers, and wounded more than 200 people as famine reached its peak in Gaza, and children are dying of Israeli-imposed starvation, Al Jazeera reported. The Gaza Health Ministry said that 18 people had died of hunger in its last 24-hour reporting period, as per Al Jazeera. The Israeli army dropped leaflets over a residential area in Deir el-Balah, warning residents to leave the area as its military chief visited Shujayea in the north and touted plans to continue the war. Protesters across Tunisia, Iraq, Turkiye, Morocco, Lebanon and the occupied West Bank's Ramallah took to the streets to denounce the Israeli siege of Gaza. Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed blocking a visa extension for the head of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Gaza and the occupied West Bank because he testified about "weaponised hunger" in Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, Palestinians say Israeli settler attacks on water supplies are making it harder to stay in their villages, as per Al Jazeera.

Senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan has said his party colleague Shashi Tharoor will not be invited to any party programme in Thiruvananthapuram till he changes his stance on the national security issue. Muraleedharan's remark came as he responded to reporters on a question of Tharoor sticking to his stand on the issue of national security. A day earlier, Tharoor had said that the nation comes first and parties are the means of making the country better. Reacting to Tharoor's remark, Muraleedharan said that Tharoor, also a Congress Working Committee (CWC) member, was no longer considered as 'one of us". He added that the party's national leadership would decide what action would be required against the Congress MP. 'Till he (Tharoor) changes his stance, we will not invite him to any party programme held in Thiruvananthapuram. He is not with us, so there is no question of him boycotting an event," Muraleedharan said. Shashi Tharoor, was led one of the multi-party delegations to world capitals to put forth India's stance against terrorism, had said that a lot of people have been very critical of him because of his stand supporting the armed forces and the central government in connection with India's response to Pakistan in the form of 'Operation Sindoor'. 'But I will stand my ground, because I believe this is the right thing for the country," he had said at an event in Kochi on July 19. Tharoor had also said that when people like him call for cooperating with other parties in the interests of national security, their own parties feel that it's disloyal to them and that becomes a big problem. Earlier too, Muraleedharn had hit out at Tharoor over sharing of a survey suggesting he is United Democratic Front's most preferred choice for chief minister, saying 'he should first decide which party he belongs to". The senior Congress leader had also attacked Tharoor following his article criticising Indira Gandhi over the Emergency appearing in a Malayalam daily.
