American University of Sharjah committed to excellence and innovation, says Bodour
The Board of Trustees of American University of Sharjah (AUS), chaired by Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS, convened on Feb.9 at Kingfisher Retreat, in Sharjah, to approve key resolutions aimed at advancing the university's strategic vision, academic excellence and institutional governance.
Sheikha Bodour said: 'The decisions taken by the Board are an expression of our total commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
'The approval of the AUS Five-Year Strategic Framework sets a clear course for our future, ensuring that AUS will continue to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders.
'I'm confident the steps we have endorsed will further strengthen our university's impact and equip students and faculty with the right tools to thrive in an evolving world.'
During the meeting, the board approved the AUS Five-Year Strategic Framework for 2025–2030, a comprehensive roadmap that will guide the university's growth and reinforce its commitment to academic distinction, research impact and student success.
The framework outlines AUS' strategic priorities in education, innovation and financial sustainability, ensuring the university continues to thrive as a leader in higher education.
Additionally, the board confirmed the appointment of Ali Alsuwaidi as Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration and Shaima Bin Taliah as Vice Chancellor for Student Experience.
The board also approved significant academic initiatives, including the launch of the restructured Masters in translation programme and the establishment of the Financial Markets and Banking Academy.
These initiatives support AUS' commitment to academic excellence and industry-aligned education, equipping students with the specialised knowledge and skills required to excel in their fields.
The title of professor emeritus was conferred upon Dr Abdulrahman Al Ali, Professor of Computer Engineering at AUS, and Dr Zayid Abdulhadi, Adjunct Faculty in the AUS Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in recognition of their distinguished service to AUS and their lasting contribution to scholarship and education.
Further reinforcing the university's commitment to governance and financial oversight, the board approved the AUS Standalone and AUS Group Audited Consolidated Financial Statements for the 15-month period ending on Aug.31, 2024.
Through these resolutions, the board reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening AUS' position as a leading institution for higher education, research and innovation, ensuring its continued impact in the region and beyond.
Recently, in a separate development, AUS and Università Iuav di Venezia (IUAV) announced a new partnership to expand academic, research and professional opportunities for their students and faculty.
The Memorandum of Understanding sets the stage for joint initiatives in undergraduate student exchange, research collaboration and professional development opportunities. It also lays the foundation for future collaborations that align with the missions of both universities.
The signed MoU was presented during a meeting at IUAV with Noora Al Suwaidi, Director of the AUS International Exchange Office and Professor Benno Albrecht, Rector of Università Iuav di Venezia.
Dr Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, said, 'IUAV is known for its deep expertise in architecture, town and territorial planning, restoration, the arts, theatre and design. This partnership, spearheaded by AUS' Office for International Exchange and actively supported by the Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing, presents an exciting opportunity for AUS to enrich its academic and research offerings in these areas through joint projects and cross-cultural exchanges that leverage our combined strengths. This partnership will open exciting new pathways for AUS and IUAV's students, faculty and researchers to collaborate and create internationally.'
Professor Benno Albrecht, Rector of Università Iuav di Venezia, said, 'The agreement with AUS represents a great opportunity to strengthen ties with the Gulf region, which is fundamental to our research.

The pieces showcased reflect her travels – she's instantly drawn to places where heritage lives in the hands of the artisans. 'When I come across a piece that draws me, I want to know more. There is always a journey behind it, a childhood memory, a family tradition, a skill passed down generations.' Visitors can browse crystals, sandalwood, hand-bound books and even a signature perfume, Terra, created exclusively for Bait Elowal, its crystal- topped bottle designed to live on long after the scent has faded. Naturally, everything is rooted in sustainability. 'Craftsmanship has always been sustainable. It employs local hands, uses what is available and respects the pace of tradition. Onshur marks major milestone with graduation of Scale Track cohort
Sharjah, Under the patronage and in the presence of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur) celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of its 2025 Scale Track at SBA's headquarters. The programme is designed to support established publishers in the UAE in scaling their operations through sustainable and strategic growth. The ceremony honoured twelve publishers who completed the intensive training course. The event was attended by His Excellency H.E. Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, and H.E. Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association, as well as programme partners, experts, trainers, and representatives from local and Arab media. The twelve graduating publishers were selected from a pool of 62 applicants who met rigorous eligibility criteria. These included a demonstrated track record of producing high-quality cultural content and a well-defined strategic vision for expansion aligned with global publishing developments. The graduating cohort comprised Ajyal Publishing, Ghaf Publications, Sidra Publishing and Distribution, Loaloa Publishing and Distribution, Kalman Publishing and Distribution, Nabatti Publishing, Shaheen Printing Publishing and Distribution, Dar Al-Farqad, Dar Shams Publishing, Dar Al Fikr Al Jadeed, Dar Al Bayan Al Arabi, and Noor Publishing. Driving tangible progress for Emirati and Arab publishers Commenting on the occasion, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SBA, emphasised the importance of empowering UAE publishers to grow and innovate within a sustainable framework. Unlocking sustained expansion through targeted support Following the directives of Sheikha Bodour, graduates of the Scale Track benefit from a robust package of post-programme support. This includes one year of professional accounting services to ensure compliance, guidance in applying for the Sharjah International Translation Grant, onboarding to Ingram's global distribution network, access to business loans secured against publishing contracts, specialised advisory sessions, and priority access to upcoming Onshur initiatives. These measures are designed to help publishers shift from operational stability to strategic and sustainable expansion.

AUS and American University, Washington, DC, launch 4+1 pathway to graduate studies in environmental science
Sharjah, UAE – American University of Sharjah's (AUS) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has signed a new agreement with American University (AU), Washington, DC, to offer a 4+1 academic pathway for AUS students majoring in environmental sciences and sustainability. The initiative will enable eligible students to earn a Master of Science in Environmental Science from American University in just one additional year after completing their four-year undergraduate degree at AUS. The agreement, finalized in April 2025, builds on more than two decades of ties between AUS and AU, which share a long-standing institutional relationship dating back to AUS' founding. This latest partnership was spearheaded by Dr. Fatin Samara, a professor at AUS' Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, who is also currently an adjunct faculty member at the Department of Environmental Sciences at AU. Her affiliation with both institutions helped bring the partnership to life, along with support from several members of the environmental sciences faculty. 'The launch of this new partnership, during the same week as Earth Day, symbolizes our community's commitment to creating pathways for students to progress toward environmental leadership,' said Dr. Samara. 'Those who choose this pathway will be equipped with the tools, knowledge and global perspective needed to address pressing environmental challenges and build a more sustainable future.' A highly regarded institution, AU is among the top 100 US universities in the U.S. News Best Colleges rankings and ranks second in the US in The Princeton Review's Green Colleges ranking. 'CAS' leadership is delighted to see this partnership come to life. It reflects our commitment to providing CAS' students with an enriched academic experience that extends beyond borders. We are proud to collaborate with a globally respected institution like American University in Washington, DC, on this 4+1 pathway. This partnership will help accelerate the route to graduate education for our students in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability program and allow them to spend a year studying in a global center for environmental policy and research,' said Dr. Hana Sulieman, Associate Dean of CAS. Under the 4+1 model, AUS students will complete their four-year bachelor's degree at AUS and transfer to American University for one additional year of study to complete their master's degree. Eligible students may transfer up to nine credits toward the master's degree, including two graduate-level courses and their senior research project, taken during their final year at AUS. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. As part of the agreement, AUS students admitted to the program will also receive a generous 50 percent tuition scholarship, significantly lowering the cost of graduate study in the US. 'We are excited to expand our partnership with the American University of Sharjah through an accelerated pathway to a master's degree in environmental science, said Dr. Vicky Wilkins, Provost of American University. 'This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to confront the complex sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow. Students applying can choose between a thesis track focused on environmental science research and a non-thesis track in environmental policy and advocacy. Both tracks emphasize interdisciplinary learning and real-world application and integrate science with policy, economics and global sustainability issues. After graduating, students will benefit from Washington, DC's position as an international hub for environmental research, advocacy and policy and its vibrant job market, where junior roles start at $60,000 and senior roles reach over $140,000 a year according to a job search and labor market data platform. Graduates of American University's Master of Science in Environmental Science have gone on to work at organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Bank, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. AU's faculty are actively involved in cutting-edge research, from food systems and climate resilience to geospatial analysis and environmental toxicology, also making it an excellent destination for AUS graduates wishing to pursue an academic or research career. The program will be available to AUS students beginning in Fall 2025.
