Early deficits 'fuel Cathedral's fire.' That proved true again in 3A championship game
Hanover Central's Sienna Stilley opened the scoring in the top of the third with a two-run homer and considering how freshman ace Jillian DeYoung carved through the Irish lineup, it felt like that might be enough.
But honestly, it would have been weird if Cathedral didn't surrender the game's first runs.
"A girl even mentioned that in the huddle. We've been here before," junior pitcher Sidney Feczko said. "Half of our games in postseason we've gotten down, then we came up. It honestly just fuels our fire. We want it even more. And it's an even more amazing feeling when you can come back from being down. It's so rewarding."

More: She's confined to wheelchair — and now a state champ
Yeah, nothing about what transpired Saturday night was new for the Irish. Just last weekend they rallied from early deficits against both New Palestine and Evansville Memorial to secure the first semistate championship in program history.
Retaliation from the first-time finalists felt inevitable and after threatening an immediate response in the bottom of the third, they broke through with four runs in the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth en route to a 5-4 win over Hanover Central.
The state championship is the first in program history for Cathedral, which finishes the season 29-2.
"We worked so hard for this. Every practice, every game," said junior catcher Kelsey Beres, who singled in the insurance run in the fifth. "We're a family. This is absolutely amazing."
"We kept the energy, stayed together and got the win," added sophomore Curstyn Hansbrough, who drove in Cathedral's first run with a base hit to right that scored Amya Gary.
Different players stepped up at different points throughout the tournament, coach Tony Matthews proudly pointed out, and Saturday, it was the bottom half of the lineup with the 6-7-8-9 hitters — Amya Gary, Sydney Matthews, Kelsey Beres and Curstyn Hansbrough — accounting for five hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.
They got on base, generated some offense and turned the lineup over to senior Anna Moore, who capitalized with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Mental Attitude Award recipient, she followed Hansbrough's initial salvo with a two-run double to left center, then came in to score on a Jordyn Hazelwood single that was misplayed in the outfield.
"The middle and bottom of the lineup came through like it did, then the top of the lineup did its thing, too," Matthews said. "This bunch, they just bring it together with everything."
"Everyone can get it done in our lineup and 6-7-8-9, they got it done," Feczko smiled. "Everyone has a role on this team and they filled their role tonight. It was amazing. It was such a team win."
In the Cathedral circle, Feczko was typically dependable. Her junior campaign was defined by her mental growth and she proved unflappable in the season finale, buckling down to strand the tying run on second in the seventh with her 10th strikeout of the night.
Feczko finished the game with four runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
"She's absolutely amazing. She's such a great pitcher and she's always upbeat," Beres said. "I just love catching for her. I can trust that she will pitch it. I trust her, she trusts me."
Feczko never gets down on herself, Hansbrough added, with Feczko quickly interjecting: "It's easy for me when I have teammates like this."

The Big Ten could be proposing a massive expansion to the College Football Playoff
Sources: The Big Ten has begun populating an expanded College Football Playoff idea, which could include 24 or 28 teams. Just an idea at this point. While we just finished the first season of a 12-team College Football Playoff, where Notre Dame went to the championship game, the Big Ten is starting to have ideas of a bigger expansion. There has already been chatter of expanding the field to 16-teams, with the Big Ten and SEC being the main benefactors of that move. On Saturday, the conference looks like they might be laying the groundwork for an even bigger expansion, either 24 for 28 teams reports ESPN's Pete Thamel. The potential proposal would see the elimination of conference title games, giving more automatic bids to power conferences, and just two at-large bids. This clearly would not be the best case for the Irish, as both the Big Ten and SEC would have 7 bids, with the ACC and Big 12 each getting five. It would have the Group of Five teams getting an extra bid as well, but it might not make a difference at all of Notre Dame continues to stay inside the top-25 teams. It's hard to imagine that won't happen, especially considering how well the program has done since Marcus Freeman took over. Personally, I hate this idea, as there aren't typically more than six teams that can realistically win a title. It also waters down an already watered down bowl season, where if you aren't in the CFP, it's almost as if it doesn't matter. I'm still in the camp that eight teams is enough, and while this past season was extremely exciting, it was drawn out too long. Imagine if this did pass how much longer the playoff would be, even with eliminating conference championship games. Another aspect of this that I don't like, its great to see the top two teams in each conference battle it. Hopefully this is just talk, as I don't think this move would be good for college football. Former Notre Dame WR on the verge of starting as a rookie for the New York Giants
While former Notre Dame wide receiver Beaux Collins didn't hear his name getting called during the NFL draft, he's still getting an opportunity to make the New York Giants roster. It's starting to look like he won't just make the team, that he could be a starter. The Big Blue Film Room social media account recently pointed out that not only is Collins getting solid run, he's getting first-team reps. They quoted Jordan Raanan, ESPN's Giants beat reporter, as he said 'you are getting first-team reps, that means something, at this point in the summer.' Part of this development with the Giants is that Malik Nabers has been out with an injury, but Collins is still taking full advantage of the opportunity. It remains to be seen what happens when his teammate returns, but you have to believe the organization is very happy with his emergence during fall camp. It's quite the journey that Collins has taken to get to this point in his career, after playing his first three years at Clemson, before finishing his collegiate eligibility with the Irish. It was a solid last year with Notre Dame, as Collins caught 41 passes for 490 yards and three scores. He'll get another chance later tonight to try and secure a spot with the Giants, as they host the New York Jets in their second preseason game of the year. Notre Dame football practice highlights from Friday shared on social media
Notre Dame football was back on the field Friday afternoon, and we found out some interesting news about star running back Jeremiyah Love and a potential role with the special teams unit. That wasn't all we saw, as there were more than a few clips of practice shared on social media. We got to see some of the Irish players getting back from injurIes, a few of the younger members of the team getting some run previewing the future, and a Tyler Buchner sighting. Check out some of the videos of Notre Dame Friday practice that were shared on social media below. Jeremiyah Love showing his hands The chatter connecting Love and the Heisman trophy might end up being more than that. If he actually does return kickoffs and has a few more opportunities through the air, he's going to New York City. Love's development into an all-around player has been a joy to watch, and this should be a massive season for him. Tyler Buchner with the 3rd-team offense Buchner transitioned back to the quarterback room to help out the younger potential starters in CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, and while he's not in the running for the job, he can still make plays. He's connecting with a future Irish star in wide receiver Jerome Bettis Jr. Is Boubacar Traore back? This could be a huge development for Notre Dame if Traore is back to full-strength for the opener against Miami. Before his injury against Purdue, he was looking like a breakout star. It will have to wait until this season, but it's looking like he'll be ready to go. Can freshman James Flanigan earn playing time? Losing Kevin Bauman for the season hurt the depth chart at tight end, a position that already had a few questions marks about would step up next. It's not like this unit isn't talented, like the quarterbacks, they just don't have much experience at this level. Flanigan could be one to have an important role in the Irish offense if the others don't perform up to expectations. The future at offensive line Three young players on the Irish line are already gelling together in Houstan, Herron and Black. The former 5-star in Black has been taking reps inside as the coaching staff already feels confident that he can play tackle at this level. Flexibility among the offensive line is something that Joe Rudolph loves, as he's not afraid to play his top players regardless of what position they entered the program as. Jordan Botehlo continues to progress back from injury Another defensive lineman working back from an injury is Botelho, and while he might not have the same impact as Traore, his return will help with depth. The last team we saw him, he was favoring his left arm, and from this clip, it looks like he's getting closer to being fully healthy.
