Jeremy Strong eyed to play Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network sequel

The Guardian31-07-2025
Jeremy Strong is reportedly the leading choice to play Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming sequel to The Social Network.
According to Deadline and Variety, sources claim that though no formal offer has been made, the Succession actor is the preferred pick to play the Meta CEO and Facebook founder in The Social Network Part II, alongside The Bear's Jeremy Allen White and Anora's Mikey Madison in unspecified roles.
Aaron Sorkin, who won a best adapted screenplay Oscar for the first film, will write and direct the new entry after years of tinkering with a new angle to the story of Facebook. David Fincher directed the 2010 film, which starred Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg alongside Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer and Rashida Jones.
The Social Network Part II, confirmed to be in development this June, will reportedly not be a straightforward sequel to the story of Facebook's founding in a Harvard dorm room, but rather a follow-up focusing on recent controversy surrounding the social media behemoth. The new screenplay will be based on reporting by Jeff Horowitz for the Wall Street Journal in a series called The Facebook Files, which explored the inner workings and harm caused by the company. The 2021 investigation exposed how internal findings had been buried, as well as Facebook's influence on the January 6 riot and the mental health of teenage users.
Deadline reports that White would ideally play Horowitz, with Madison – fresh off her best actress Oscar win this March – playing the whistleblower at the heart of the articles.
Sorkin had previously teased more overt political leanings for the new script. 'I blame Facebook for January 6,' he said in 2024 on a special edition of The Town podcast, live from Washington DC. When asked to explain why, he responded: 'You're gonna need to buy a movie ticket.
'Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible,' Sorkin said. He added: 'There is supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity – there isn't.'
The Social Network, based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, made $224m worldwide in 2010 and won three Oscars – best adapted screenplay, original score and editing. Eisenberg, who was nominated for his starring role, is yet to be attached to the new project.
In a recent podcast interview, Zuckerberg was critical of the film, which portrayed him as calculating and ruthless. 'It was weird, man,' he said. 'They got all these very specific details of what I was wearing, or these specific things correct, but then the whole narrative arc around my motivations and all this stuff were, like, completely wrong.'
Strong received an Emmy for his portrayal of Succession's Kendall Roy on the acclaimed HBO series, among many other accolades. He was nominated for an Oscar this year for playing the fearsome attorney and Donald Trump mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, Ali Abbasi's film tracing the young Trump's rise in 1980s New York. He will next appear on screen alongside White in the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere, playing the record producer and Springsteen collaborator Jon Landau.

Doctor Who star's show dropped from UK streaming service confirms ITV launch

More than a year after it was pulled off Paramount Plus, a mystery drama starring Jodie Whittaker is returning to UK screens. A month after it aired in Australia, the series One Night was made available to UK viewers in November 2024. The six-part series followed friends Tess (Jodie), Simone (Nicole da Silva) and Hat (Yael Stone), whose lives have been changed by 'the traumatic events of one night in their hometown twenty years previously'. It was teased of the show: 'One Night is the story of three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one night 20 years ago. 'Since then, Simone has harboured secret hopes of becoming a novelist but most of her haphazard attempts have been shoved into her bottom drawer. Now, at the age of 40, she has finally written the one story she could never get out of her mind, and her debut manuscript has become an unexpected overnight success. 'But it soon becomes apparent that the devastating story the book tells doesn't exclusively belong to her. At the heart of Simone's novel is a tragedy which also happened to Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone), her two childhood best friends. 'As it becomes harder to prise fact from fiction, one person's memory and story from another's, the book threatens to derail all their friendships, bringing old traumas to the surface of the small coastal community where they grew up, and stirring its perpetrators, who want to make it all go away.' Despite it being labelled a 'very solid crime drama' by critics, One Night suddenly disappeared from Paramount after just three months. It was explained at the time that this was due to the platform reportedly shifts towards a focus on Hollywood-style content with mass appeal and wider cost-savings efforts. However, ITV has now announced it will be bringing the show back and allowing viewers to tune in again – or for the first time. One Night will now stream in full from Saturday August 16 and will also air that night on ITV1. At the time of its release, The Guardian wrote the following about One Night: 'The overall effect is very much of an Australian Big Little Lies – a female-centred story played out mostly amongst affluent people in shiny clothes and shinier houses.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'With strong performances and a diverse cast, it demands attention — but its biggest triumph may just be in the conversations it sparks after its watched,' The London Evening Standard shared. 'The show might have benefitted from unspooling its central narrative over fewer episodes because after the halfway mark the drama becomes less character-driven, skating into crime mystery territory. But the acting throughout One Night is incredible,' The Age added. One Night was the first TV role since playing the first female Doctor for Jodie. Reflecting on what drew her to the project, the 41-year-old actress explained that the drama depicted a story about sexual assault in a way that felt 'completely unique' to her. 'What made this completely unique to me and completely engrossing was the change of POV [point of view],' she told Metro. 'Very often it's told from outside in – there's an investigation, there's detectives, there's people working things out. This is about the decimation something like that can have. 'It's also about how the event – whether it happened a minute ago or 20 years ago – is defining for a group of women that it affects, particularly this friendship group. But also what it's about is how we all survive something like that and who owns memory, who has the right to tell stories, and especially if that story is true.' More Trending One Night was created and written by the award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) and directed by Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) and Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor). It also stars Kat Stewart, George Mason, Erroll Shand, Noni Hazlehurst, Tina Bursill (Doctor Doctor), William Zappa, Damien Strouthos and Jillian Nguyen. One Night is streaming on ITVX from Saturday August 16. It will air that night at 9.30pm on ITV1. View More » A version of this article was originally published on February 5, 2024. Got a story? Bethenny Frankel reveals WILD celebrity matches AI suggested she date… including Jeff Bezos

Bethenny Frankel revealed the celebrities artificial intelligence suggested she should date in a hilarious new video. On Sunday the 54-year-old media personality took to Instagram to share, 'Someone from my team just sent me the top five matches for me on ChatGPT. Let me tell you the top three.' The first familiar name she dropped was Leonardo DiCaprio, who is known for dating women in their 20s, despite turning 50 last November. 'It's actually not the worst one for ChatGPT to come up with from my perspective. Yes, I know I'm only 38 years too old for him,' she quipped. 'But, if he had some sort of breakdown, he came to Jesus, he went to the Hoffman Institute, he healed, he had an emotional glow-up...' Jeff Bezos and Bradley Cooper were also on the short list, and she encouraged her followers in the caption: 'Comment your picks for top 4 & 5 … I'm curious.' Bradley is currently dating supermodel Gigi Hadid, who turned 30 in April. 'Number two: Bradley Cooper,' Bethenny went on to reveal. 'The only problem I have with this is I love Gigi Hadid and him together. I think they're still together. 'I love that couple and they're maintaining privacy and they're beautiful and they're like, cool and they're chill and I don't mind the age difference.' She added that she wouldn't mind dating the 50-year-old Maestro star as she joked, 'So like, fine. If they break up, fine, I'll go out with Bradley Cooper. But for the moment, I really like them together.' Bethenny then addressed Jeff, 61 — who recently married Lauren Sanchez, 55 — explaining why she doesn't think the Amazon boss would be a good fit for her. 'The third one — Lauren and Jeff are an amazing match and they're extremely social. And as you can see, I'm in the bed,' she noted. 'And also it'd be too much talk about work and Amazon products. I feel like we would never be able to turn the off switch on.' She praised the famous couple, adding, 'I think they're actually an excellent match. I think they're madly in love. They're good.' The former Real Housewives of New York City star then questioned, 'But for one and two, doesn't ChatGPT look at who someone has historically dated, based on age?' Her fans engaged in the comments, with one suggesting, 'I think Keanu Reeves would be an awesome pick if his current relationship doesn't work out. He seems like a down to earth, nice guy!' Another added, 'This might be the best ChatGPT use. At least the funniest.' Someone else joined the conversation, writing, 'You need someone funny and super authentic - and a water sign or earth sign/they will provide loyalty and stability.' And one person joked: 'I'm holding out for Donald Trump Jr. for you,' adding a crying laughing emoji. 'I see you with a man who is so confident and has done it all and is so in love with you. An older man who can be flexible and is super easygoing. Who he is? Your guess is as good as mine. But not a celebrity... God no,' another fan shared.

'Weapons' horror film scores a box office victory

It's August, and horror and humor came to play. In a month that's long been known to let edgier movies thrive, Zach Cregger's highly anticipated horror film 'Weapons' did not disappoint, topping the box office during its debut weekend with $42.5 million domestically from 3,202 theaters. It made $70 million internationally. The film's success also handed its distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures, the seventh No. 1 opening of the year, and became the studio's sixth film in a row to debut with over $40 million domestically. 'Freakier Friday,' Disney's chaotic sequel to the 2003 classic, 'Freaky Friday,' took the second spot during its premiere weekend, earning $29 million in 3,975 North American theaters. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return, this time for a double body-swapping between the mother-daughter duo and Lohan's teen daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. Viral marketing tactics, coupled with strong social media word-of-mouth, boded well for both films' success, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. 'The top two films could not be more different, and that's what makes this weekend so appealing for moviegoers,' Dergarabedian said. 'Both are perfectly tailored for their audiences to react in real time over the weekend to these films and then post on social media.' 'Weapons' transports audiences to the small town of Maybrook, where 17 kids up and leave their homes at 2:17 a.m., leaving bewildered parents in their wake. The town is left to navigate the lingering effects of trauma through horror, paranoia and a touch of existential humor. The film is Cregger's follow-up to his solo directorial debut with the 2022 genre-bending horror, 'Barbarian.' That critically-acclaimed film had a slower start and smaller budget, but still topped the charts during its premiere with $10 million domestically and made a splash in the genre. 'Weapons' generated a lot of buzz for its strong reviews (95% on Rotten Tomatoes). 'The Internet's exploding right now between Friday and today. You just see that people are having a great time with it,' said Jeffrey Goldstein, president of Global Distribution for Warner Bros. 'It starts with an exceptional movie, an exceptional marketing campaign, and the date was exceptional too.' The success of the comedy-horror double premiere meant 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' surrendered its two-week run in the top spot and landed in the third position, bringing in $15.5 million domestically. The superhero movie enjoyed a strong $118 million debut, but stumbled in its second weekend. 'The Bad Guys 2,' which got a healthy start at the No. 2 spot during its premiere weekend, came in fourth place, earning $10.4 million domestically. 'The Naked Gun' had a similar fate, reaching the fifth position with $8.4 million in North American theaters. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' which came in seventh this week, is expected to hit $800 million globally by Monday, according to NBC Universal, following a successful run in theaters. Warner Bros. started off slow this year, but made a comeback with the box-office hit, 'A Minecraft Movie,' which opened with $157 million domestically. Since then, movies like 'Sinners,' 'Superman' and now, 'Weapons,' have found success. The studio set 'a blueprint to how to create a perfect summer lineup,' Dergarabedian said. 'Weapons 'also joins a stream of successful horror movies this year, its opening numbers coming in just behind 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' and 'Sinners.' Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'Weapons,' $42.5 million. 2. 'Freakier Friday,' $29 million. 3. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' $15.5 million. 4. 'The Bad Guys 2,' $10.4 million. 5. 'The Naked Gun,' $8.4 million. 6. 'Superman,' $7.8 million. 7. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $4.7 million. 8. 'F1: The Movie,' $2.9 million. 9. 'Together,' $2.6 million. 10. 'Sketch,' $2.5 million.
