Trainer Matthew Dale eyes Flemington Group 3 return for Danny's St Darci in 2025 Aurie's Star Handicap

Goulburn trainer Matthew Dale is likely to bring consistent sprinter Danny's St Darci back to her previous home state for Saturday's Group 3 Aurie's Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
Danny's St Darci started her career in Victoria as part of the Archie Alexander stable at Ballarat where she was placed at Listed level before Dale's clients bought her for $70,000 last year.
The rising seven-year-old has returned her buyers more than twice that amount in 12 months, courtesy of a Listed win in Brisbane and a pair of Group 3 placings in Melbourne and Sydney.
Winning Saturday's Group 3 contest at Flemington would boost Danny's St Darci's broodmare value.
Dale said the addition of blinkers and more aggressive race tactics were the key to Danny's St Darci's development.
'The biggest difference has been the blinkers and putting her into the race a little more than she was in the past,' Dale said.
'We decided to ride her to step her into gear with the blinkers and that really woke her up.'
The Flemington 'Straight Six' course holds no fears for Danny's St Darci after her solid third in a Group 3 race during last year's Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Danny's St Darci is set to tackle the Aurie's Star Handicap second-up after the mare beat one runner home when resuming in the July Sprint at Rosehill on July 19.
Dale said Danny's St Darci was slightly disappointing first-up but noted she had only placed once in seven first-up attempts.

'Her first-up run was a little bit disappointing on face value but she had a few excuses there and she sort of builds into a preparation,' Dale said.
'Her form profile suggests she gets better as her prep goes on and, being an older mare now, I'd suggest that is more so.
'She's well travelled and well performed.
'We'll have a look at how she gallops on Tuesday and we'll have a look at the field.
'In the last two years, it's been a bit thin as there has only been about seven or eight runners in the race.'
Danny's St Darci is one of 13 entries for the Aurie's Star Handicap with the impressive Grahame Begg -trained mare Splash Back likely to open favourite in 'all-in' markets on the $200,000 feature.

Fri Fix: tears to cheers, the pub sesh that delivered an iconic run

This might be our favourite interview of the year because Simone McKinnis and the Melbourne Vixens might be the best story in Australian sport right now. They looked shot after a shocking start to the year, when McKinnis said 'we just need to go to the pub'. Since that moment, they've ridden a rollercoaster of emotion to reach the Super Netball grand final. It's the coach's last game in charge too. Group 1-winning jockey Noel Callow under investigation over racist videos in Darwin

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. WARNING: This article contains offensive language A racially-charged video has emerged of Group 1 jockey Noel Callow ridiculing an Indigenous man. Racenet has confirmed a street talk-style exchange, understood to be recorded in Darwin this time last year, is currently under review from Queensland Racing Integrity Commission officials. 'A video was recently brought to the attention of the Commission,' a QRIC spokesperson said. 'It is presently the subject of an investigation.' SUBSCRIBE NOW! Racenet has contacted Callow for comment. A second video has also been circulated, however, Callow is only heard not pictured in the frame. In the 17-second clip, Callow, riding a bicycle on the footpath with a jockey whip in the left hand, fired extremely offensive racist four-letter slurs at pedestrians after inaudible verballing. The leaked videos were initially shared privately but have since been circulated more widely. Callow is again in Darwin to reunite with out-of-sorts Bear Story in the $200,000 Darwin Cup on Monday. Callow last year placed third on then favourite Bear Story in the Northern Territory feature. The 50-year-old also has two rides in Darwin on Saturday. The Queensland-licensed ex-Victorian made a winning return to the races on Wednesday in Darwin. Callow has only just completed a two-month suspension for a physical altercation with another rider in the jockeys' room during a race meet at Doomben on May 28. The street talk video has a playful start, 'what's doing crackers', with the Indigenous man and then escalated. Noel Callow. Callow: 'Have you showered? F--- you stink like F---.' Man: 'Nah, I haven't got a job (inaudible)'. Callow: 'You stink like f---. Have some pizza. Take the pizza. Eat. Eat the pizza.' Man: 'I don't want to eat.' Callow: 'Have a shower then, do me a favour. Have a shower. You stink like f---.' Man: '(inaudible) I sleep on the street.' Callow: 'So you don't want a pizza … what do you want?' Man: 'I want a beer.' Callow: 'You want a beer … if you have a shower, I'll buy you a beer.' Man: '(inaudible) I don't have a shower. There's no shower in the friggin area.' Callow: 'Well jump in the f---ing creek … for f--- sake man.' The conversation continued with an inaudible exchange before Callow said: 'Good to have you on the show. What's your name?' Unable to understand the name after two attempts, Callow made up his own version before going with 'Yothu Yindi! Yothi, that's you, Yotha, ole Yotha'. The man responded to Callow with 'what's wrong with you?' after the jockey started singing Treaty, the famous Yothu Yindi anthem. Callow ended the clip with 'Good to have you on the show, man'. The exact timing of the videos is unclear, other than separate night and day interactions. The daylight racially-fuelled clip started with Callow riding a bicycle up behind pedestrians. 'Look at these c--ts,' Callow said. After an inaudible exchange, a pedestrian shouts 'watch out where you're riding your bike'. Callow fired back with venom. 'Stop walking on the f---ing footpath, you f---ing c--ns,' Callow said. 'Get up the c--ns.'

Ladbrokes reveals the biggest winners and losers from the 2024-25 racing season

Wagering giant Ladbrokes has released details of the jockeys, trainers and horses who were the biggest winners and losers for punters in the just completed racing season. Melbourne Cup winner Robbie Dolan was the biggest pal of punters, stripping more than $11m from the betting agency's book which was mainly thanks to the Cup win of $91 longshot Knight's Choice. Punters also filled up by backing Sydney star hoop Tim Clark, who was a $2.3m loser for Ladbrokes over the racing season, while underrated Victorian hoop Jordan Childs was a $1.6m loser for Ladbrokes. By contrast, backing Victorian champion jockey Jamie Melham was a wipe-out for punters with the bookie winning $5.5m from her rides during the season. Kerrin McEvoy, Joao Moreira and William Pike were also major winners for the betting agency. Punters have to pay the so-called 'J-Mac tax' to back the mounts of superstar Sydney hoop James McDonald who was a $560,000 winner for Ladbrokes during the racing season. Chris Waller might dominate Australian racing but the legendary Sydney trainer was a big winner for Ladbrokes who were more than $11m richer from punters who backed Waller's 2393 runners during the season. Other big names such as Ciaron Maher and James Cummings were also major winners for the betting giant. Melbourne Cup legend Sheila Laxon, who trains with husband John Symons, was a major punters' pal as punters who backed her runners during the season scooped more than $12m. It was a figure inflated by the Melbourne Cup fairytale of Knight's Choice, the roughie who became the first Queensland-trained winner in Melbourne Cup history. Sydney trainer Bjorn Baker has been airborne in 2024-2025 and bookmakers don't want another season where punters score a total win of $2.8m from his 756 runners in the just finished racing season. Victorians Grahame Begg and Matt Laurie were also strip outs for the Ladbrokes as punters scored more than $2m in profits from each. In terms of horses, Blue Army warrior Zardozi was the biggest loser for Ladbrokes punters who dusted off a combined $1.79m from backing the mare during the season. Buckaroo wasn't far behind, producing a $1.69m loss for punters, while Giga Kick backers contributed a $1.2m profit to the betting agency's book. Knight's Choice was a $12m stripout for Ladbrokes, while superstars Via Sistina, Bella Nipotina and Treasurethe Moment were also major winners for punters. â– â– â– â– â– WINNERS AND LOSERS FOR PUNTERS ON THE LADBROKES BOOK IN 2024-25 JOCKEYS LOSERS 1 – Jamie Melham -$5,581,866.93 (361 rides) 2 – Kerrin McEvoy -$4,492,367.27 (676 rides) 3 – Joao Moreira -$3,864,933.11 (74 rides) 4 – William Pike -$3,212,143.34 (696 rides) PUNTERS' PALS 1 – Robbie Dolan +$11,054,451.36 (461 rides) 2 – Tim Clark +$2,374,223.91 (541 rides) 3 – Jordan Childs +$1,664,016.45 (594 rides) 4 – Clint Johnston-Porter +$1,106,652.31 (817 rides) TRAINERS LOSERS 1 – Chris Waller -$11,675,709.76 (2393 runners) 2 – Ciaron Maher -$8,601,700.53 (2422 runners) 3 – James Cummings -$7,864,110.95 (680 runners) 4 – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr -$4,934,186 (873 runners) PUNTERS PALS 1 John Symonds & Sheila Laxon +$12,220,406.60 (98 runners) 2 Bjorn Baker +$2,800,614,27 (756 runners) 3 Graheme Begg +$2,153,303.56 (338 runners) 4 Matt Laurie +2,096,996.61 (338 runners) HORSES LOSERS 1 – Zardozi -$1,799,934.96 (12 starts) 2 – Buckaroo -$1,699,687.77 (9 starts) 3 – Giga Kick -$1,371,569.77 (6 starts) 4 – Vauban -$1,204,264.96 (4 starts) PUNTERS PALS 1 – Knight's Choice +12,406,829 (5 starts) 2 – Via Sistina +3,078,463.52 (9 starts) 3 – Bella Nipotina +$1,814,001.59 (5 starts) 4 – Treasurethe Moment +$1,792,389.19 (9 starts)
