Athletic Bilbao star Jauregizar denies Malaysia link, calls it 'a lie'

KUALA LUMPUR: Athletic Bilbao midfielder Mikel Jauregizar has rubbished talk of representing Harimau Malaya, branding the rumour "a lie".
In an interview with Spanish daily Marca, the 20-year-old made it crystal clear he has no links to Malaysia, despite growing speculation online.
"People just make things up. A link to Malaysia? Impossible, that's a lie. I will not be playing for Malaysia," said Jauregizar.
Claims that the young Spaniard had Malaysian heritage recently caught fire on social media, fuelling hopes among local fans of a potential naturalised star.
A video by a local journalist suggesting such ties went viral and even found its way to Jauregizar through friends.
"My friends sent me a video of a journalist from over there who made up that I had some Malaysian background," he said.
"I'm not going to play for Malaysia. People invent all sorts of things."
Asked about his online habits, Jauregizar admitted he's active on social media but prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
"I don't really like being in front of the camera answering questions. But everything that gets published eventually reaches us."
Jauregizar is the second European-based player in recent weeks to shoot down claims of Malaysian roots.
Dutch striker Ferdy Druijf also dismissed suggestions he had Malaysian blood via his grandmother.
Speaking to ESPN Netherlands, the former AZ Alkmaar forward — now playing in Slovakia — said the rumour began on a random Instagram account.
"Yes, it's actually kind of crazy, I have to be honest. An Instagram account suddenly appeared with that rumour about Malaysian roots," said Druijf.
"I didn't do anything about it, but everyone started spreading it. I even got more followers on Instagram and realised what was going on. It's a crazy reason.
"My parents don't even know much about it. So yeah, maybe it would only be revealed if I did a DNA test or something."

JDT signs Harimau Malaya centre-back Irazabal for new season

KUALA LUMPUR: Spanish-born centre-back Jon Irazabal has become Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) latest signing ahead of the 2025-2026 M-League season. The 29-year-old joins the Super League champions after three solid seasons with Azerbaijan's Sabah FC, where he made 79 appearances and scored five goals. Irazabal, who made his debut for Harimau Malaya in a 4-0 win over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifier at Bukit Jalil on June 10, will wear the No. 17 jersey at JDT. He is expected to strengthen the Southern Tigers' backline under newly appointed head coach Xisco Munoz. Irazabal becomes the fourth new face unveiled by JDT, following the arrivals of Spanish defender Antonio Glauder, Brazilian attacker Jairo Da Silva and defender Ibrahim Manusi. JDT will kick off their pre-season with a tour of Spain from July 3-22, with one of the highlights being a friendly against newly promoted La Liga side Levante UD. Meanwhile, Fergus Tierney has signed with Super League side Sabah for the upcoming season. "We welcome our new forward, Fergus, who joins us after completing his loan with Thai League side Nakhon Pathom United and previously with JDT," the club announced on Facebook. "Part of Malaysia's national team, and now, part of our family. A new chapter begins." The 22-year-old Scottish-Malaysian forward has been on fans' radar since making his senior debut for Harimau Malaya late last year. Tierney was called up for the national training camp in November 2024 for friendlies against Laos and India, replacing the injured Romel Morales. He earned his first cap on Nov 14, 2024, in a 3-1 win over Laos, and scored his first international goal on Dec 8, 2024, in a 2-2 draw with Cambodia during the Asean Cup.

MALAYSIA'S first-ever appearance in the 2025 edition of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup in Uzbekistan from Aug 26 to Sept 9 will provide the best platform to evaluate the team's actual progress. Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski expects his men to be tested on and off the pitch at the tournament, which brings together eight teams, including Iran and Uzbekistan, who have qualified for the 2026 World Cup. 'The experience gained will be vital for the continued development of the national team,' he posted on the Malaysia NT Facebook page today. The other teams expected to take part are Oman, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. 'We are proud to participate in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. We will face a tougher challenge as we will be up against strong teams. 'This tournament is an opportunity for the Harimau Malaya squad to bring glory to the country, boost the spirit of the supporters and continue to strengthen unity,' Cklamovski said. For the record, Iran emerged champions in the 2023 edition by defeating Uzbekistan 1-0 in the final.
