KUALA LUMPUR: A Sarawakian man arriving in Kuala Lumpur for work recently was left stunned when his e-hailing driver cheerfully greeted him with, 'Welcome to Malaysia.' The man shared the awkward encounter on Threads, sparking a flurry of East Malaysians chiming in with similar stories of being mistaken for foreigners – in their own country.
Advertisement From 'What currency do you use?' to 'Do you have MyKad?', the replies read like a comedy sketch, except the jokes are real and come from fellow Malaysians. Many said they have grown numb to the ignorance, especially when it comes from city folk in their 30s and 40s who still think Sabahans live on trees and Sarawakians do not know what KLCC is. While some laughed it off, others urged for better education and awareness, asking the obvious: 'It is 2025 – how are we still explaining this?' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? A man believed to be a police officer later arrived at the scene and took over the situation. The video was uploaded to Facebook by the victim's friend on Sunday, who urged women to stay vigilant and said they later accompanied the suspect to a police station. She claimed that thousands of upskirt footage were found on his phone, suggesting multiple victims, and warned that her friends may also face legal consequences for using force to access the device.
