Bieber, Roenick among those who skate in hockey benefit for LA fire relief fund
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Justin Bieber and Steve Carell laced up their skates along with Hockey Hall of Famers Rob Blake, Mark Messier, Cammi Granato and Jeremy Roenick on Sunday afternoon to support relief funds from the Los Angeles fires.
The Los Angeles Kings and National Hockey League held 'Skate for LA Strong" at Crypto.com Arena to benefit recovery efforts from the devastating wildfires in Southern California. The Palisades Fire was the most destructive in Los Angeles' history.
'We're looking to have a good time and show when we come together, good things happen,' Bieber said.
The four-team exhibition tournament was the brainchild of Hockey Hall of Famer and Kings President Luc Robitaille.
'We've all been touched by what happened last month. We all have friends, families or different (people) that have been impacted, so for us to be able to make a difference and to do something, we're gonna raise as much as possible and make a difference," Robitaille said.
The team coached by actors Vince Vaughn and Cobie Smulders won both of its games to take the exhibition tournament.
Roenick had two goals on the day and then playfully dropped the gloves with Bieber during one of the games.
'This was an amazing celebration of hockey and first responders. It was a lot of fun, seeing everyone that showed up and some of the LA firefighters playing was a good feeling,' Roenick said.
The other teams were coached by Will Ferrell and Snoop Dogg; Danny DeVito and Al Michaels; and Hannah Stocking and Andrew Whitworth.
'When the Kings asked me to do this, I was like, 'Absolutely.' I don't care if I'd never thrown on a pair of skates before, this is where I want to be," said actor Skylar Astin. "I'm a resident of Malibu, so I really have the firefighters to thank for even containing it as much as they were able to. I even took PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) over here for the first time, and it was the first time I actually saw all the destruction first-hand and it was really chilling. It's going to be a while for us to really build back properly, but LA is a resilient community, and I think we'll get it done.'
Besides the game being shown locally on television in Los Angeles, it aired nationally on ESPN2. Instead of tickets being sold, they were distributed to first responders and those who have been displaced by the fires.

Yainer Diaz hit a two-run homer for Houston in the third and Brooks Lee tied it with his shot in the fifth that extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games. Bryan Abreu struck out three in a scoreless eighth for the Astros. Brown plunked Byron Buxton on the left elbow to start the sixth before walking Trevor Larnach. But he retired the next three batters, with two strikeouts to escape the jam. Buxton remained in the game for the bottom of the inning but was replaced in center field by Harrison Bader in the bottom of the seventh. The team said he had left because of a bruised left elbow. João Klauss has 1st career MLS hat trick for St. Louis in 3-3 tie with Galaxy

LOUIS (AP) — Joao Klauss scored three goals — the 28-year-old's first MLS hat trick — the last of which came in the fifth minute of stoppage time for St. Louis City on Saturday in a 3-3 tie with the LA Galaxy. Goalkeeper Roman Burki played a free kick from beyond midfield to the edge of the box where Timo Baumgartl flicked a header toward goal. Klauss ran onto the ball at the right edge of the 6-yard box and slipped a first-touch shot inside the back post to cap the scoring. St. Louis (3-9-6) has one win — a 2-1 victory over San Jose on May 31 — in its last 14 games. Klauss near the left corner of the area, played a short pass to Marcel Hartel and darted toward goal as Hartel tapped it back to Klauss for a rolling finish from the edge of the 6-yard box to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Gabriel Pec scored his second goal of the season and his first since March 2 to tie it at 1-1 in the 41st. Pec put away a one-touch finish off a centering pass played by Marco Reus from the right side of the area. Pec stole a misplayed back-pass after St. Louis defender Jayden Reid slipped and fell and then cut back to evade Bürki, who had charged off his line, before casually rolling a shot into a wide-open net to give LA a 3-2 lead in the 87th. Matthew Boyd has been a key performer in his 1st season with the Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are on top of the NL Central with a depleted rotation. The quiet consistency of Matthew Boyd is a major reason for their success. Boyd has pitched at least six innings and allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 14 starts with his new team. The left-hander tossed six innings of one-hit ball in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. 'He continues to just do an excellent job and put us in position to win games,' manager Craig Counsell said. Chicago is missing three key starting pitchers because of injuries. Shota Imanaga could return by the end of June, but Justin Steele is out for the season after he had elbow surgery. Javier Assad is trying to come back from an oblique issue. Amid those issues with the rotation, Boyd just keeps sailing along for the Cubs — particularly at Wrigley Field. He is 6-0 with a 2.25 ERA in six home starts this year. 'Pitching at Wrigley is really special,' Boyd said. 'Getting to play in this environment, every outing, you know, you go out there, there's so much energy from the fans. It feels like a playoff-type outing. I'm really grateful to call it home right now.' The 34-year-old Boyd finalized a $29 million, two-year contract with Chicago in December. His late grandfather, John Boyd, grew up in Chicago and was a big Cubs fan. Matthew Boyd had Tommy John surgery in June 2023, but he returned last year with Cleveland and went 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA in eight starts with the Guardians. He also made three postseason starts for the AL Central champions, allowing one run while striking out 14 in 11 2/3 innings. 'He's got a lot of different ways to get guys out, whether it's the fastball, the changeup, slider, curveball," Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson said. 'It's kind of a little bit of a funky arm slot. He's a true pro in ways that he wants to get guys out. So you know when he's out there you know you got a chance to win the game. ... He's been awesome for us.' The only hit Boyd allowed on Saturday was Andrew McCutchen's one-out drive in the first inning for his seventh homer. He retired 14 in a row after McCutchen went deep. 'You just go keep pitching, right?' Boyd said. 'Whether it's a home run or a walk or even a strikeout, something good, you just continue to go out and keep doing what you expect of yourself when the ball's in your hand.' Tommy Pham broke up the string when he reached on a leadoff walk in the sixth, but Boyd promptly picked him off. Boyd has picked off a baserunner in a career-high three consecutive games, tying Rick Sutcliffe and Bill Hands for the franchise record. He has a major league-high six on the season, one more than Yankees left-hander Max Fried. Boyd said Bellevue College coach Mark Yoshino in Washington taught him his pick-off move when he was a kid. 'It's always been something I've put a focus on. ... It's something that you just want to stay sharp on,' Boyd said. 'You don't want to fall into weird patterns.'
