Elegant Ashtrays, Updated USM Chairs, and New Piercings at the "Shelter" Design Fair
I went to check it out with photographer Rebecca Smeyne and to select a few favorite objects in the show. Here are a few things we liked.
My vote for best in show was Likeminded Objects, the studio run by Elise McMahon in Hudson, New York. I'm a fan of her fabric patchworks, wire armatures, and other bright collages of rough-and-ready materials.
A pair of stoneware sconces by Ember Studio anchored one wall at Colony, the New York gallery/co-op run by Jean Lin.
Alara Alkan Studio at Colony
Fort Standard did what they do best and showed off some creative new cabinet pulls in various finishes.
Clothing brand Noah continued its forays into furniture and home decor with a set of quilts by Leslie Opp-Beckman.

Her textiles are woven from Noah's dead stock fabrics.
USM's modular system at Shelter
A recently founded San Francisco company called Murmmr debuted a collection of heavy glass ashtrays. Extinguish whatever you've been burning—we opted for palo santo at the fair—and mesmerizing snakes of smoke circulate under the glass bells.
The dichroic glass version was by far my favorite.
Ladies and gentlemen, Jonald Dudd. This year, the exhibition of irreverent objets featured pleasingly awkward assemblages of odd materials that, in one way or another, add up to furniture. It was a parade of odd objects led by a hot dog stand, and for some reason, merch included tie-dyed 'Grateful Dudd' T-shirts.
(That blue tarp inflates and deflates as if breathing, BTW. It's a very Laura Palmer chaise?)
Teddy Breedlove at Jonald Dudd
My top work among the outré ensemble was 'The Quilted Lamp' by New York designer Teddy Breedlove.
Availableitems at Shelter
I stopped to snap a photo of the finials that top this amazingly odd postmodern bookshelf from Hudson Valley shop Availableitems.
New York studio Bond Hardware is known for its tastefully gothy jewelry and accessories, but at Shelter they also showed home-scale objects, including a lounge chair and a mirror, as well as porcelain lighting designs by Natalia Landowska and stone and resin work by Marcus Vinicius De Paula.

Kennywood employee saves ducklings from Pittsburg Plunge tracks
It's been hot in Pittsburgh, and everyone at Kennywood is trying to cool off in the Pittsburg Plunge — including a family of ducks. Kennywood on Tuesday gave a social media shoutout to Noah, an operations team employee who literally jumped into action to rescue baby ducklings. The park said the young duck family became stranded on the Pittsburg Plunge track after they went for a swim in the Lost Kennywood fountain. A video of the rescue went viral on TikTok, getting over 100,000 views. (Photo: londadah/TikTok) "It was a normal, crazy Saturday when our security team told us about the ducklings," Noah said on Kennywood's Facebook page. "Our team had to respond since they were in a ride area, and I was the only available supervisor to take the call. After talking with our safety director, we shut off the ride and I was given the okay to go in and rescue them." Kennywood said Noah put the baby ducklings in some nearby bushes and the parents quickly went over to make sure they were OK. The park touted Noah's other accomplishments, saying he's a past recipient of the Kennywood Academic Scholarship and was a Golden Tickets Award ambassador. He first started as a ride operator in 2017 and worked his way up to area supervisor. "CHEERS for jumping into action to help some baby ducklings in need, Noah!" Kennywood wrote. Also, some Pittsburgh trivia for you: The Pittsburg Plunge is spelled without the "h" because that's how Pittsburgh used to be spelled from 1980 to 1911.

‘Love Island USA' Asks Fans To Be Kind to Islanders
Love Island USA is heating up, both inside and outside villa. As couples are formed and destroyed, it seems that fans have gotten a in their criticism of the islanders. At least, that's what Love Island USA's message for fans asking for kindness suggests. 'We appreciate the fans, the passion for the series, and the amazing group of Islanders who are sharing their summer with us,' reads a statement that appeared on-screen during Monday's episode. 'Please just remember they're real people—so let's be kind and spread the love!' The message was also posted to the show's official Instagram page. This plea for fans comes a week after Huda Mustafa's ex, Noah Sheline, with whom she shares a young daughter, posted on social media asking fans the very same thing. 'At the end of the day I hope everyone remembers we're human,' Noah reportedly wrote on his Instagram story. 'Her going on that show to find love, or whatever you think it was she's doing, remember she's still human, she has a daughter, and a life.' He went on to say that angry fans were combing through his Instagram to 'post rude things and comment worse.' Noah added that he was worried about how these mean comments might affect Huda's mental health when she inevitably exits the villa. 'What you guys do will affect her mental health and my daughter's maybe in the future,' he wrote in part. 'I don't want my daughter's mom to get out and see this and her mental health goes down a hill.' Unfortunately, it looks like fans have decided to redirect their anger at the Love Island USA page directly. Many commented on the show's plea for kindness calling out Huda's treatment of Jeremiah. 'Y'all can't let a girl run around and verbally abuse all the Islanders and then preach being kind,' wrote one fan. Others went for Ace—another villain of the season—and called out his treatment of Amaya. Many more also made the point that Love Island USA producers are the ones who craft the storylines and do the edit. At the end of the day, if there are villains in the villa, it's certainly not because of the fans, but maybe we can still be a little nicer. Or at the very least not leave angry and mean comments directly on people's pages.

It took me 1:12 to complete today's NYT Mini. A slightly tough one, today, I thought, so I was pretty happy with my time. BINGE was the only Across answer I got on my first pass. NOAH didn't click at all at first and OTTER was on the tip of my tongue, but I decided to move on. I thought 7 Across might have been 'buzz' or 'client' but neither of those were five letters. I'm very glad I got AGENT, HERDS and BOB, because I would have been stumped otherwise. The letters they filled in helped me get NOAH and OTTER, and it was easy to fill in NITRO and ON TAP after those. I'll see you tomorrow for more NYT Mini fun!
