'Missed opportunity': Aussies robbed of Gout Gout after $380 million decision
Gout had initially been expected to prioritise the junior world championships in the United States in August next year, where he'll be aiming to emulate Usain Bolt - who won the under-20 title in the 200m back in 2002. But the teenage sensation's manager revealed on Tuesday that he's keen to compete at the Comm Games if the schedule allows it.
The 100m is expected to be held at the start of the Comm Games schedule in late July, meaning there's now every chance Gout could contest it before jetting to the US for the 200m at the world juniors. If Gout does compete, it will be another dagger to the Australian public after the Victorian government gave up the hosting rights.
After initially winning the bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, then-Victorian premier Dan Andrews backflipped and declared it was too expensive for the state. The Victorian government had to pay the Commonwealth Games Federation - since rebranded Commonwealth Sport - $380 million in compensation, with $200 million diverted to Glasgow.
Gout Gout could have been running on home soil
Glasgow will instead host a 'modified' version of the Games, but it won't be funded from the public purse. Gout's manager James Templeton revealed on Tuesday that the teenager is eyeing an appearance in Glasgow. 'We need to wait for the full Commonwealth Games program to be released, but yes we are planning that Gout will be available to run an event in Glasgow before going onto the World Juniors in Eugene," Templeton said, according to the .
Legendary commentator Bruce McAvaney said Gout's involvement would be a huge boon. 'Gout Gout is arguably the sporting story of a generation," he said. "And the prospect of him lining up in Glasgow next year, taking on the best sprinters from the Caribbean, South Africa, Canada and Britain, is just so exciting."
The Victorian government couldn't have foreseen Gout's rise to stardom, as he wasn't making waves in 2023 like he is now. But commentator Scott Gullan pointed out the missed opportunity that Victoria won't be hosting.
"Missing the opportunity to see the next big thing in Australian sport wearing the green and gold is a body blow to Victorian sports lovers," Gullan wrote in the Herald Sun. "Victoria blew the chance to see Gout Gout run for gold."
Tellingly, a poll of over 2000 Yahoo readers shows the majority felt Andrews was right to scrap the Games. The event has lost a lot of popularity in recent years, with many of the belief it's become irrelevant and meaningless.
Glasgow to host modified version of Commonwealth Games
Australia's chef de mission Petria Thomas told AAP on Tuesday that Victoria's decision is "not going to fade quickly". She said: "Obviously, try not to look too much back into the past. But that disappointment of the Victorian government cancelling the Games, it's not going to fade quickly ... particularly in the way it was done as well (with not much warning).
"Incredibly grateful and fortunate that the Scottish have stepped up to the mark here. It was obviously highly disappointing that the Victorian government pulled out and it left the Commonwealth sport movement in a very difficult position.
"It's fantastic that the Games will be on in Glasgow. Obviously a little bit of a different look to them this time with fewer sports which is a shame. But it's the reality of the position that the Commonwealth sport movement was put in, unfortunately."
The scaled-back Glasgow Games will only feature 10 sports - nine less than in 2022 in Birmingham. Traditional Aussie strongholds of hockey, rugby sevens and diving have all been chopped, but 82 per cent of the events in which Australia medalled in Birmingham remain.
The Glasgow program will feature athletics, swimming, 3x3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing and judo. "We don't shy away from the fact that we would like to finish on top of the medal tally," Thomas said.
"To be honest, our Australian public expect the Australian team do well. We will be doing everything we can to help our athletes across as many sports as possible win as many medals, and preferably gold ones - that's nothing to shy away from."
And the future of the event appears to be safe. Five nations including 2036 Olympics hopefuls India, Canada and Nigeria have tabled bids to host the 2030 Comm Games, while New Zealand is among two bidders for the 2034 version.
Would've been nice to watch him race for gold here but it is what it is 🤦♂️Still not amused at paying to NOT host something but what can you do?I didn't vote for them

Rooker and Langeliers hit HRs, Andujar has 2 RBIs to help Athletics beat Mariners 6-1
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Brent Rooker and Shea Langeliers hit home runs, Miguel Andujar had two hits and two RBIs and the Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1 on Tuesday night. Luis Severino (5-11) allowed a run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings. Elvis Alvarado, Sean Newcomb — who struck out the side in the seventh — and Michael Kelly combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief. Langeliers hit a solo homer off Mariners starter Logan Evans (4-4), Soderstrom singled and Andujar followed with an RBI double to make it 6-0 in the fifth. Rooker hit a three-run shot before Langeliers doubled and then scored on Andujar's double that made it 4-0 in the third. Randy Arozarena hit a two-out single, stole second base and scored when Jorge Polanco singled in the fourth for the Mariners' run. The Mariners struck out 11 times, left nine runners on base and were 1 of 7 with runners in scoring position. After Polanco's RBI single got the Mariners on the board, Dominic Canzone singled and Ben Williamson walked to load the bases but Severino got Cole Young — the potential go-ahead run — to ground out and end the inning. Arozarena has 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season, his fifth consecutive 20/20 season. The 30-year-old is tied with Mike Trout for third most 20/20 seasons in American League history behind Alex Rodriguez (six) and José Ramírez (seven). Ramírez is the only other player in MLB to accomplish the feat in each of the past five seasons. Bryan Woo (8-5, 2.91 ERA) is set the take the mound on Wednesday against Jeffrey Springs (9-7, 4.13) to conclude a three-game set.

World Aquatics Championships 2025: Leon Marchand breaks Ryan Lochte's record; Luca Urlando wins gold in butterfly
It's not a surprise that France's Léon Marchand is one of the best swimmers in the world. Marchand won four gold medals at the 2024 Olympics, destroying the competition and announcing himself as a dominant force in the sport. He took that a step further Wednesday. Marchand set a new standard in the 200m individual medley Wednesday, not only beating Ryan Lochte's record, but obliterating it by more than a second. Marchand finished with a time of 1:52.69 during the semifinals Wednesday. The previous record, which was held by Lochte, was 1:54.00. Lochte set that record at the World Championships in 2011. With the win in the semifinals, Marchand will look to carry his success over to the final Thursday. Marchand won the 200m individual medley at the World Championships in both 2022 and 2023, and will look for his third gold in the event Thursday. Luca Urlando takes home gold in 200m butterfly The 200m butterfly has proved an elusive event for Team USA on the men's side following Michael Phelps' retirement. No American man had medaled in the event since 2011, Phelps' last time winning the 200m butterfly at the World Championships. But that changed Wednesday, as Luca Urlando came away with the gold. Urlando posted a 1:51:87 time, beating Poland's Krzysztof Chmielewski and Australia's Harrison Turner for the top spot. Chmielewski finished second with a time of 1:52:64. Turner came in third, posting a 1:54:17 time. The win is a long time coming for Urlando, who was on the rise before a shoulder injury derailed him in 2022. With the win, Urlando becomes the first American man to pick up a gold medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. The team struggled early at the event due to an illness that caused a number of swimmers to pull out of events or post slower times than usual. The team has recovered since then, with the women leading the way. Gretchen Walsh and Katie Ledecky are among the Team USA women to pick up gold medals at the World Championships so far. Jack Alexy sets new American record in 100m freestyle American Jack Alexy looked strong during 100m freestyle prelims Wednesday. Alexy turned in an incredible time of 46.81, setting an American record. Alexy's time narrowly beat Caeleb Dressel's 46.96 from the 2019 World Championships. It was an impressive performance by Alexy, but it didn't result in a medal ... yet. Alexy still needs to compete in the final. If he can recapture his semifinal performance, Alexy could walk away from the 100m freestyle with a medal. His job did get somewhat easier Wednesday after 100m freestyle favorite Pan Zhanle was surprisingly eliminated after a poor performance in the semis.
