Johor MB calls for urgent action over prolonged autogate disruption
He noted that the disruption affected the smooth flow of in and out transactions.
"I have extended this matter directly to relevant parties at the Federal level. I urge immediate steps to be taken to ensure that this issue does not repeat," he said after making a surprise visit to the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (BSI) here.
Onn emphasized the need for an efficient, consistent operating system capable of functioning optimally at all times.
"As I have stated before, despite some improvements in crowd management, it is not adequate. Operations at the country's border gates have not yet reached the level of efficiency we expected," he remarked, adding that such incidents not only inconvenience the public but also affect the state and country's image.
Since Friday noon, foreigners have been unable to use all autogates nationwide, though those with Malaysian passports remain unaffected.
As of press time, some autogates have begun resuming services in stages nationwide since 4.30pm.

Thailand seeks a neutral venue for border talks with Cambodia; Malaysia seems to be the best venue

Bangkok has proposed shifting the Aug 4 General Border Committee meeting, agreed by the leaders of the two countries, to a city in Malaysia. The request was made by Thailand's Acting Defense Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit, in a letter dated July 31, to his Cambodian counterpart, citing "the sensitive nature of the situation.' Malaysia, which hosted ceasefire talks between the two nations' leaders earlier this week, is ready to host the meeting as the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Nattaphon said. Cambodia's Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata didn't immediately respond to a request for comments. Despite agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire on Sunday, the two countries have continued to exchange accusations of unprovoked aggression. The five-day conflict resulted in over 40 deaths and displaced around 300,000 people along their roughly 800-kilometer (500-mile) border. The truce was brokered by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, acting as Asean chair, and followed pressure from US President Donald Trump. "This upcoming session is of an extraordinary nature' as it will provide the two sides an opportunity to jointly explore a way forward in de-escalating tensions and resolving the border security issues, Nattaphon said. He also asked that the meeting be extended to Aug. 7 to provide more time for discussions due to "the number and gravity of issues to be addressed.' The General Border Committee is one of several bilateral mechanisms established by Thailand and Cambodia to address border matters. The countries take turns hosting the meetings, and it is currently Cambodia's turn to do so. The Thai army has established an interim team of observers, including military attachés from Asean member states, to monitor the ceasefire, according to a statement. The group also discussed the possible establishment of a broader Asean monitoring mechanism, which will be addressed at the Thai-Cambodia meeting next week, the army said. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Malaysia SMEs gain competitive edge with reduced US tariffs, says Samenta
KUALA LUMPUR: The reduction of US tariffs on Malaysian imports to 19% provides critical relief for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) grappling with rising costs, particularly in manufacturing, furniture, textiles, and food exports. While the cut falls short of expectations, it marks a strategic win for trade competitiveness, according to the Small and Medium Enterprises Association Malaysia (SAMENTA). SAMENTA president Datuk William Ng called the move a 'significant breakthrough' in Malaysia's trade relations with the US, the world's largest economy. 'This offers a more level playing field and restores exporter confidence amid volatile global demand,' he said. The revised tariff, effective August 1, 2025, replaces the previous 25% rate. Ng urged the government to accelerate support for SMEs targeting the US market, including incentives for compliance with US standards and sustainability requirements. 'We must also diversify export destinations and fast-track digitalisation in supply chains, especially for high-value sectors,' he added. He credited Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz for their 'tireless efforts' in securing the tariff reduction. 'Their pragmatic engagement with global partners has paid off,' Ng noted. - Bernama

Malaysia to buy 30 more Boeing jets worth US$9.5 billion
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to purchase an additional 30 Boeing aircraft worth US$9.5 billion, marking the second phase of a major procurement deal with the United States. Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed the move as part of reciprocal trade negotiations between the two nations. 'The government is addressing the trade deficit with the US through strategic procurements, including these aircraft purchases,' he said during a press conference following the US tariff adjustment announcement. The US recently reduced tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) had earlier committed to buying 30 Boeing jets valued at US$9.5 billion in the first phase. The latest order brings the total investment to US$19 billion. The initial purchase included 18 Boeing 737-8s and 12 Boeing 737-10s, powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, with an option for 30 additional aircraft. This deal aligns with Malaysia's strategy to modernise its aviation fleet and strengthen its position in the global aviation market. Similar agreements have been struck with Japan, the UAE, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Bangladesh as part of broader negotiations to lower US tariffs. - Bernama
