Why Marco Sturm was ‘selfishly' happy the Bruins didn't play well last season

Yahoo18 hours ago

BOSTON — The Bruins finished the 2024-25 season at the bottom of the Atlantic Division standings and missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016.
But for new coach Marco Sturm, he didn't mind how the season panned out.

'Selfishly, I'm glad the Bruins didn't play well last year because otherwise I wouldn't be here,' Sturm said Tuesday after he was officially introduced as the Bruins coach.
The Bruins faced a slew of issues last season throughout the lineup. An 8-9-3 start led to the dismissal of Jim Montgomery, but Boston never quite found a steady groove under interim coach Joe Sacco.
Sturm, who spent five seasons with the Bruins, knows what it takes to win and knows what the fans expect. Offense is atop Sturm's list of areas to address immediately, but understands there are no quick fixes.
'It's not going to happen overnight, but that's something I will address right away,' he said.

The Bruins averaged 2.71 goals per game last year, which was tied for last in the Eastern Conference. Their power play ranked 29th, and the team had just two players — David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie — to reach the 20-goal mark.
Despite the issues at hand, Sturm is confident in the Bruins due to the talent they already have on the roster. But he knows talent alone won't be enough to get Boston back on track.
'I'm really looking forward to also pushing the team to the next level,' Sturm said. 'It's going to be up to me and my coaching staff, up to my players, up to management and also up to the fans of the Boston Bruins.
'I know we have a lot of work to do and we won't fix it overnight. But it will start Day 1 of training camp,' he added. 'Teams win championships, not one coach or one player.'

If UCLA meets LSU in College World Series, Tigers' star pitcher might not pitch

If UCLA meets LSU in College World Series, Tigers' star pitcher might not pitch UCLA baseball could play the LSU Tigers at the 2025 College World Series. The Bruins hope they play LSU in a winners' bracket game, not a losers' bracket game. We asked LSU Wire's Will Rosenblatt about LSU's best player. The answer was swift and direct: Kade Anderson. "The draft-eligible sophomore was mocked as the No. 1 overall pick in MLB. com's last mock. The lefty ranks No. 2 nationally with 103 strikeouts," Rosenblatt told us. Rosenblatt Wrote at LSU Wire that "Anderson worked as a reliever as a true freshman in 2024, but took over LSU's ace role in 2025. He's thrown 103 innings and owns a 3.76 ERA. In his last appearance vs. West Virginia in the super regional, the Mountaineers tagged Anderson for some runs, but the LSU ace made it through seven innings. "LSU will begin its 2025 College World Series on Saturday vs. Arkansas. Anderson is likely to get the nod. If LSU wants an eighth national title, it needs Anderson to be dynamite in Omaha." This point -- specifically, that Anderson should pitch against Arkansas -- means UCLA would probably miss Anderson in a potential second game (on Monday, June 16). If UCLA faces the LSU pitcher, it might be in a semifinal game next week. It would be a good problem for the Bruins to have.

Former Sharks Head Coach Lands New Gig

Yesterday, former San Jose Sharks head coach Bob Boughner landed a new job in the NHL as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders, joining Ray Bennett, who was also hired by the team. Boughner will work under Islanders head coach Patrick Roy as they look to turn the franchise around. During his time with the Sharks, Boughner posted a record of 67-85-23. He was originally named interim coach after Pete DeBoer was fired and went on to spend three seasons as head coach from 2020 to 2022 before being let go. Advertisement He previously served as an assistant coach with the Sharks from 2015 to 2017, before leaving to become the head coach of the Florida Panthers. After being fired from that role, he returned to San Jose. For the past three seasons, Boughner was the associate coach with the Detroit Red Wings, working under both Derek LaLonde and Todd McLellan. He'll have his work cut out for him with the Islanders. After a disappointing season that ended early, the team landed the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and now has a chance to reshape its future. Boughner will be a key part of that process on Roy's coaching staff as they look to get the Islanders back into the playoffs. Sharks Should Avoid Buying Out Marc-Édouard Vlasic This Summer Sharks Should Avoid Buying Out Marc-Édouard Vlasic This Summer The San Jose Sharks have a lot of questions that need answering this summer. Will they try and move up in the draft? What's the plan for their players on expiring contracts? Will they look to land a big fish in free agency? There are plenty of unknowns—but one question that shouldn't even come up is whether the Sharks should buy out Marc-Édouard Vlasic. Could the Boston Celtics extend Latvian big man Kristaps Porzingis?

Could the Boston Celtics extend Latvian big man Kristaps Porzingis? Given his injury history and recent performance for the Celtics, it is understandable if fans of the team are not exactly enthusiastic about such a prospect. But is there any scenario such a move would actually make sense for not only Boston but Porzingis as well? It seems unlikely given how much value the Celtics center has as an expiring contract that could get Boston entirely under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA)'s second apron and the brutal penalties it brings when a team is above it. Also, with both Al Horford and Luke Kornet being free agents, such a move might cause the Celtics to lose one or both despite being more productive and reliable options for Boston. Advertisement The hosts of the CLNS Media "Still Poddable" podcast, Brian Robb, Sam Packard, and Jay King, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below!
