Who is Marco Sturm? The former Bruins star and Olympic coach rumored to be Boston's next head coach
Everything to know about Marco Sturm (Getty Images) The Boston Bruins may be on the verge of making a major coaching move, and the name at the center of the buzz is one that longtime fans will instantly recognize—Marco Sturm. As the search heats up following Jim Montgomery's departure last November, Sturm has reportedly advanced to in-person interviews for the position, signaling that the Bruins are seriously considering him to lead the bench. And if reports from Cam Robinson are to be believed, the deal might already be close to done. A familiar face in Boston with deep NHL roots Marco Sturm isn't just another candidate. He's a former Bruin with a strong emotional tie to the franchise. From 2005 to 2010, Sturm laced up for Boston, tallying an impressive 106 goals and 193 points in 302 games. He became a reliable forward during his tenure and earned respect both on and off the ice. While he's never held an NHL head coaching role, his career since retiring as a player has more than prepped him for the big leap. From Olympic success to developing NHL talent Sturm's coaching résumé is quietly impressive. After retiring, he led Team Germany to an unexpected silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics—a stunning achievement that showcased his ability to lead under pressure. Since then, he's been working with the Los Angeles Kings organization, first as an NHL assistant and most recently as the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. Over three seasons with the Reign, Sturm compiled a 119-80-17 record, helping develop future NHL standouts like Quinton Byfield and Brandt Clarke. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A failing liver is taking my son away from me! Marco Sturm's comeback? Former Boston Bruins star reportedly set to return as the next head coach
Marco Sturm at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. (LEHTIKUVA/JUSSI NUKARI) The Boston Bruins could be on the brink of a full-circle moment and it doesn't involve a player lacing up his skates. Instead, it's Marco Sturm, a former fan-favorite winger, potentially stepping behind the bench as Boston's next head coach. Multiple sources, including Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects, are reporting that Sturm is expected to be the guy. While nothing has been made official by the Bruins front office, the hockey world is already buzzing over what this bold move could mean. Why Marco Sturm is emerging as the frontrunner for the Bruins' bench — PuckReportNHL (@PuckReportNHL) It's not every day that a former player returns to lead the same franchise from behind the bench. But Sturm's candidacy makes a lot of sense. He spent five impactful seasons with the Bruins during his playing career, including a 27-goal season in 2009. That familiarity with the city and the organization gives him a unique connection many coaches don't have. But it's his coaching résumé that's drawing real attention. Sturm took Germany to an unexpected silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, proving he can lead and inspire. Since then, he's been behind the bench with the AHL's Ontario Reign, where he helped develop LA Kings prospects and compiled a strong 120-82-11-3 record over three seasons. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo According to The Athletic's Fluto Shinzawa, Sturm is one of three finalists for the Bruins job, alongside Mitch Love and Jay Woodcroft. But reports suggest Sturm and Love are getting second-round, in-person interviews with Sturm potentially already being Boston's choice. At this point, there's been no official word from Don Sweeney or the Bruins front office but the signs are pointing in one direction. Marco Sturm has the history, the coaching chops, and reportedly the inside track. If Boston does seal the deal, they'd be making a statement: that it's time to blend the old with the new and hand the reins to a leader who knows what it means to wear the spoked-B. This might just be the beginning of a new era for Bruins hockey, one that could bring a fresh voice, a familiar face, and, hopefully, deeper playoff runs. We would expect most companies to have some institutions on the register, especially if they are growing. As you can see, institutional investors have a fair amount of stake in Sturm Ruger. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. Former Canucks bust a surprise addition to list of coaching candidates
A new possibility to lead the Vancouver Canucks into their post- Rick Tocchet coaching era has emerged, and it's a name that may elicit a chuckle from Canucks fans: Marco Sturm. The former NHL forward has spent the past three seasons coaching the AHL's Ontario Reign; before that he was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings. According to Vancouver hockey insider Irfaan Gaffar, Sturm has spoken with the Canucks about their NHL head-coaching job opening, vacated last month by Tocchet. Sturm last played in the NHL in 2011-12, a season that began with a six-game stint with the Canucks. It went badly. He was far from the second-line scoring threat he had once been and then-Canucks general manager Mike Gillis quickly moved on from the winger, trading him to the Florida Panthers — along with versatile but aging Mikael Samuelsson — and taking a bet on David Booth in return. Booth, you may recall, was brought in to see if he could return to the outstanding power forward he had once been before concussions derailed him with the Panthers. He is, of course, most remembered for the lines Canucks head coach John Tortorella landed about him: 'I thought our best forward was David Booth, which is good for him but not good for us,' and 'a weird dude.' But Booth didn't hit much and is more emblematic of the decline years of the Gillis' era. The Sturm trade is also memorable for the other guy in the deal: Steve Reinprecht, who the Canucks could afford to bury in the minors with his US$2 million contract. Anyway, add Sturm to the list of Canucks coaching candidates: Manny Malhotra is a well-understood and well-discussed possibility, as is Adam Foote, Postmedia News has confirmed. CHEK-TV's Rick Dhaliwal has reported that Todd Nelson and Luke Richardson, who both have NHL head-coaching experience, are on the list, and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman resurfaced Mike Vellucci's name. Canucks GM Patrik Allvin and the team's president of hockey operations, Jim Rutherford, know him well from his days coaching the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL squad. Is Sturm a realistic option? Coaches in his position are always looking for promotion to the NHL. The Canucks have hired two coaches in similar spots in the past decade to be their head coach: Willie Desjardins and Travis Green. Inevitably there's a budgetary element to these hires as much as a potential element: They may prove to be the next exciting thing but they also work cheap. Sturm has taken the Reign to the playoffs three years in a row. Malhotra has the Abbotsford Canucks in the playoffs this year and they've proven to be a highly competent outfit. Tocchet is headed back to TV this weekend for a couple nights on the TNT broadcast, working from the American network's Atlanta studio. He's fielded head-coaching interest from the Philadelphia Flyers and the Seattle Kraken, it's understood, and the Boston Bruins, who missed out on Mike Sullivan, have now apparently also expressed interest in Tocchet, a source confirmed. Sullivan, the former Canucks assistant who Rutherford promoted to head coach of the Penguins during the 2015-16 season, in which they won the Stanley Cup, was hired by the New York Rangers on Thursday. It's also believed that TNT would like to bring Tocchet back full-time. He's an outstanding commentator and well-spoken. He was well-regarded on the TNT panel before he was hired as the Canucks' head coach in 2023. pjohnston@
