‘False earnings, affiliation claims': CCP fines British Lyceum Rs5mn
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has imposed a penalty of Rs5 million on British Lyceum (Pvt.) Limited for publishing a misleading advertisement.
The ad falsely claimed that teachers could earn up to Rs250,000 per month, and stated a project valuation of Rs3.7 billion,the commission said in a statement.
It also falsely claimed affiliation with Cambridge Global UK, which is a dormant entity.
Additionally, the ad said that well-known educationists and technologists were on the company's Board of Directors.
CCP launched an enquiry after receiving complaints about these claims. The investigation found the claims to be false, unverified, and deceptive.
Deceptive claims: CCP imposes Rs40m fine on Al-Ghazi Tractors
The Commission concluded that British Lyceum had violated Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010 by engaging in deceptive marketing.
Subsequently, the Commission has imposed Rs3 million penalty under Section 10(2)(b) for misleading consumers and another Rs2 million penalty was imposed under Section 10(2)(a) for potentially harming other businesses.
The company also submitted improper and unsigned financial statements during the investigation.
Moreover, the SECP had also enlisted the company among those suspected of unauthorized activities. These were taken as aggravating factors in deciding the final penalty.
British Lyceum, however removed the ad after the enquiry began. This was treated as a mitigating factor in reducing the fine.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to promoting fair competition and protecting consumers from deceptive marketing practices.

Man held for blackmailing woman
The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested a man accused of blackmailing a woman using a compromising video and extorting over Rs700,000 in cash from her, officials said on Friday. According to an official statement, a case was registered on the complaint of the victim, who alleged that the accused, identified as Ghulam Kazim, had secretly recorded an inappropriate video of her. He allegedly used the footage to threaten and blackmail her, demanding both money and illicit favours under the threat of releasing the video on social media, she added. The woman told investigators that Kazim had already extorted Rs700,000 from her in hush money. Acting on the complaint, the NCCIA arrested the suspect during a raid on Autobahn Road in Hyderabad. The agency also seized his mobile phone, which reportedly contained incriminating data, including the video used for blackmail. The accused, a resident of Sobho Dero in district Khairpur, was taken into custody and an FIR was registered against him. Officials said further investigations are under way to determine if the accused was involved in similar offences against other victims.

Panel to monitor impact on oil prices
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a 16-member committee to monitor the impact of the volatility in oil prices in the wake of Israel's attack on Iran, a major oil producing country. A notification issued on Friday by the Ministry of Energy said there has been a sudden spike in oil prices in the international market after the start of the Israel-Iran conflict. According to the notification, the committee — to be convened by the minister and finance — includes petroleum, power ministers, state minister for finance as well as the governor of the State Bank. The committee will closely monitor the forward/futures prices of Petroleum Products and the predictability of supply chain in view of the current conflict in the region. It will also determine forex implications of price volatility for the short and medium term and suggest a plan if required — to ensure that there are no supply disruptions and the market is well supplied. It will also carry out a detailed analysis of the fiscal impact, in the event of a protracted conflict. The committee may co-opt any other member as deemed necessary for the fulfillment of its mandate. "The Petroleum Division shall provide secretarial support to the committee. The committee shall submit its recommendations on a weekly basis for the perusal of the prime minister," it added. Fuel prices Consumers brace for yet another hike in fuel prices as estimates suggest that petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) rates may increase in the upcoming fortnightly review, largely driven by a surge in international oil prices. According to official sources familiar with the pricing structure, petrol is expected to see a marginal rise of around Re1 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel could go up by approximately Rs5 per litre. The changes would apply from June 16 to June 30, with the final decision to be made based on import cost calculations on June 15. At present, the ex-depot price of petrol stands at Rs252.63 per litre. Widely used in motorcycles, rickshaws and private cars, any change in petrol price significantly impacts the expenses of the middle and lower-middle income groups. Meanwhile, the ex-depot price of HSD is Rs254.64 per litre. Diesel fuels the bulk of Pakistan's heavy transport sector, including trucks, buses, tractors and farm machinery such as threshers and tube wells. Given its broad use in agriculture and freight, an increase in diesel price typically triggers inflation across food supply chains.

Farmers start receiving tractors under wheat support programme
LAHORE: The Punjab government has started distributing green tractors among farmers under its wheat support programme to encourage wheat cultivation across the province. A total of 1,000 tractors are being handed over through a transparent balloting process. Speaking at a distribution ceremony held in Multan as part of the 'Grow More Wheat' campaign, Punjab Agriculture Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani said the Chief Minister of Punjab has introduced a landmark Rs27 billion package to promote wheat farming and increase production. As part of the wheat production competition, farmers at the provincial level will receive an 85-horsepower tractor for the first prize, a 75-horsepower tractor for second, and a 60-horsepower tractor for third. At the district level, the first prize is Rs1 million, second prize Rs0.8 million, and third prize Rs0.5 million. Under this initiative, farmers with wheat crops on 1 to 12.5 acres are receiving a subsidy of Rs5,000 per acre. The minister added that in the Multan Division, 109 farmers are being given tractors under the campaign. He also noted that in the first phase of the Green Tractors Programme, 9,500 farmers had already received tractors. In the second phase, 20,000 more tractors will be distributed. Meanwhile, Phase 2 of the Chief Minister Punjab Kisan Card scheme is offering interest-free loans worth Rs100 billion. The maximum loan limit has been raised to Rs300,000, and landholding eligibility increased to 25 acres. Farmers can withdraw 30% of the loan in cash, while 20% is reserved for diesel. To support the scheme, 4,000 registered dealers and over 700 PSO fuel stations have been included in the network. The ceremony was also addressed by Secretary Agriculture Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo.
