Sark traditional festival returns for third year

A festival based around cultural traditions will return to Sark for its third year. La Beltane festival, which takes place on 3 May, will include traditional events and music. During the day, donations will be taken for Sark's Professor Saint Fund.Director Jolie Rose said the event was "expecting to see many returning visitors and for the festival to sell out again".
The event will include a fire procession by burning a large wicker man, and live music from local musicians to celebrate the start of summer. Russ Fossey, from Guernsey Arts, which is sponsoring the festival, said it was important for the Channel Islands to "connect with its roots".

"In turn, it helps to modernise our facilities and create positive impressions at the start and end of people's journeys."The Piano Project began in 2019 as an opportunity for local artists to put forward their artwork for a piano, which would take centre stage in a public space. The piano has previously been located at Guernsey Airport and the Performing Arts Buddery said Tiffany Anna's artwork, displayed adjacent to the duty-free shop, was a "bright and eye-catching" addition to the departures Anna said: "This was such a fun project to bring to life. I'm grateful to Guernsey Ports for the opportunity - and I hope the artwork makes people smile and brings a bit of happiness to their day."

Guernsey Liberation Day art exhibition marks 80th anniversary

Celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of Guernsey's Liberation Day will include an artist-led exhibition. Exile and Return was developed when artist Rosanne Guille and the Reverend Dr Adrian Datta, of St Pierre du Bois Church, met while swimming at Fort at the parish church of St Pierre du Bois and the Rectory Fellowship rooms, it will be open for six weeks from 7 May with a preview on 6 May. Dr Datta gave the exhibition its title, saying it echoes and reflects the many narratives he had heard in relation to those who stayed and those who left the island during the days of Nazi occupation. Dr Datta said: "The 80th Liberation Day celebration is hugely significant in the life of the Bailiwick. "Sadly, but inevitably, there are fewer and fewer people around who lived through the occupation years. It is important that their experiences are honoured, remembered and marked in a very special and clear way. "The Occupation Arts Collective is doing this through the medium of the visual arts. It will leave a permanent legacy of this occasion." 'Hardship and sacrifice' There were 12 artists involved in the exhibition. They are Jenny Aitken, Pierre Datta, Sally Ede-Golightly, Annabel Ede-Golightly, Deborah Grice, Rosanne Guille, Keith Langlois, Olympia McEwan, Fiona Richmond, Adam Stephens, Lou Stephens and Aaron Guille said: "In telling the story of the occupation, the artists involved have created an impressive body of work. "We have asked them to tap into their family histories, recollections and experiences, along with an exploration of local archives."Guernsey Arts sponsored the exhibition and said: "The Occupation Arts Collective have put together a sensitive and high-quality project examining the years of hardship and sacrifice leading up to this anniversary."

Guernsey film to premiere at national festival

A short film partly shot in Guernsey is due to be screened at the Sunderland Shorts Film Festival. It will be the world premiere of Whispers of Freedom, written and directed by Guernsey filmmaker Brandon film tells the story of Chris Gueffroy, a waiter who tried to flee East Germany after he discovered he was being conscripted to the film was supported by both Guernsey Arts and the DDR Museum in Berlin. I cannot thank them enough," Mr Ashplant premiere is due to take place at the Omniplex in Sunderland on 16 May.
